I am searching for information on Laura WELLS, who may have been my grandmother. My grandfather, Samuel Reese GRAVES was a school teacher and lawyer around the turn of the 20th century in Lockhart, TX (Caldwell Co.). He apparently married, and quickly separated from Laura Wells in about 1917. A son, William L. Graves was born in February 1918, probably in Beaumont, TX--he was my father, who was raised by an aunt and uncle. From oral family histories, I believe that my grandmother was still alive and living in Lockhart as late as 1959. I have a ggg aunt named Frances HISAW that was born around 1852 in either Georgia or Alabama, the daughter of Mahala TURNER & Joel C. Hisaw. Joel & Mahala moved to Scott County, Arkansas by 1870, but Joel's brother Jim Hisaw lived in Caldwell County. I wonder if this could be her living with her Uncle Jim Hisaw and marrying Calvin Huff in August of 1873? Any help on Hisaws and Sims in Caldwell County, Texas will be appreciated. I am looking for living descendants and/or the genealogies of S.R. & Susan (VOIGT) YATES. Susan is the eldest child of Ferdinant & Agnes Adalene (LEHMAN) Voigt. Susan was born in Germany March 5, 1846 and traveled to America when she was only one year old; she died Feb. 1, 1925 and is buried in the Kempner Cemetery, Lampass Co. Tex. Her husband, S.R. Yates, who preceded her in death by 33 years is also buried there. In the 1880 Caldwell Co. TX census, the head of household shown in Precinct 1, page 61, #18: James Yates, merchant, age 45, born in England may have been a son of John C. Yates. Septimus R.(S.R.) and William J. and their families, including their mother, Susan (ARMSTRONG) (Yates) RHOADES and her two Rhoades sons are found in the same census living in Precinct No. 5 ( pages 2 and 5 respectively). Twelve years later (Feb. 7, 1892) S. R. died and was buried in Lampass County. Did his widow, Susan (Voigt) Yates remarry or live a widow's life; perhaps with a married daughter whose surname is unknown to us? I find Ella Yates signature on the Pettytown Cemetery Homecoming Register for Sunday May 6, 1973. I would like to contact Ella or some of her close kin.

I am researching my grandfather, Clarence LANEY, born in Lockhart on Sept 15, 1876 to John William Laney and Rebecca ?. Clarence married Elfrieda HAMPE (unkn date or location) and settled in Lockhart and raised one child, Margaret Laney (b: Dec 16, 1914). Margaret was my mother. Clarence was a newspaper printer and worked for the New Braunfels paper and also the Lockhart Register. My g-grandfather, John William Laney was born in KY in 1832, and moved to Lockhart after 1860 (probably after the Civil War). He married Rebecca ? in 1874 and they had three children: Mattie O. Laney (b: 1874), Clarence Laney (b:Sept 15, 1976), and Arthur James Laney (b: 1879). John Laney was Postmaster for Lockhart from 1873 until 1885. Any information regarding any of these Laney's would be greatly appreciated. I will be more than happy to share my information with any other Laney researcher. I find Ora Alice PEACOCK married Robert Wesley JOHNSON 31 July 1899 in Waelder, Gonzales Co, TX. Ora Alice Peacock is the ggranddaughter of Elizabeth DAWSON (Mrs. John PETTY of Bastrop Co. TX). Called "Betsy" she is one half Cherokee Indian, the daughter of Polly Ann and Capt. John ROGERS and granddaughter of Chief Joseph VANN of Georgia Plantation. Polly Ann's half-sister is Tiana ROGERS (Sam Houston's Indian wife). The CHANDLERS and Peacocks are cousins and my info is not complete on them. Your best source is the very good work of Mrs. Barbara Chandler Spray "Chandler and Peacock Cousins with Petty and Hayhurst Families". A reference copy is available at the Bastrop Library in Bastrop, TX.
