Holmes ~ ca 1899

Located southeast of the intersection of Farm Road 20 and West Fork of Plum Creek in the central Caldwell County area, the town was named for J. P. Holmes, who ran a general store in 1899 and established a post office. By 1905, the post office was discontinued and service was shifted to Lockhart. In 1906, a school was built. Holmes was a community built on agriculture with a strong emphasis on cotton, and ranching taking a strong second. With the construction of good roads, Holmes slowly faded, and the families moved to Lockhart; today all traces of this town have vanished.
