Polonia ~ ca 1880

The Polonia community, situated off U.S. Highway 183 and FM 2001, lies just south of Rogers Ranch and was settled by Polish immigrants in the 1880s. These families retained the Polish traditions brought from their homeland as they established productive farms. The village had a cotton gin, blacksmith shop, and a general merchandise store that provided needed supplies as well as a gathering place for the local people. Among the families who resided in the community were these surnames: Bienek, Kalinowski, Malinowski, Scholwinski, Urbanski, Boniewicz, Bonkowski, Zaleski, Wisewski, Grabarkiewtz, Petrosky, Foryszewski, Dikowski, Levndowski, Foerster and Dzirzanowski. Descendants of those first settlers are educators, engineers and other professional workers. Today only the cemetery marks the site of the community.
