CASS COUNTY - BARBER CEMETERY Dr. Barber died November 23, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Justice William A. Barber Jr., formerly of the Texas 5th District Court of Appeals at Dallas. Dr. Barber was born in Gurdon, Arkansas September 1, 1935, and was raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she graduated from Little Rock High School in 1953. Dr. Barber received her undergraduate education from Ouachita Baptist College and then earned a master’s degree and doctoral degree from Texas Christian University. In 1966, Dr. Barber began a 27 year teaching career at Dallas Baptist University. She became the university’s first Distinguished University Professor and rose to the position of Chairperson, Department of English and Foreign Languages. Dr. Barber was considered an expert in the writings of British author C.S. Lewis and developed a class at the university on his writings. During the 1980s Dr. Barber hosted a book review program on Dallas radio station KCBI where she reviewed Christian books. In 2010, Dr. Barber was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the Board of Trustees of Dallas Baptist University. Dr. Barber was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church of Oak Cliff where she taught a Sunday school class for many years. A private family burial will be at Barber Cemetery.
