ADAM

Childress -  Funeral services for Nannie Gladys Pieratt Adams, 61, were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church at 4 p.m. The Rev. E. E. White, district superintendent, officiated. Mrs. Adams died Tuesday, August 14, 1956, at about 6:20 a.m. in the Childress General Hospital, after a long fight to regain her health. She had been in failing health for a year and was hospitalized several weeks ago.  She was born February 14, 1895 in Williamson County, Texas to James Franklin and Martha Vest Pieratt, and moved to Childress County in 1906.  She and Ernest Adams were married in Kirkland on December 14, 1913 and made their home there until moving to Childress in 1943. Survivors include her husband, Ernest; two brothers, R. H. Pieratt of Childress and Buford Pieratt of Amarillo; and five sisters. They are Mrs. Roy Key, Mrs. Jess Key, Mrs. Emma Caradine, Mrs. E. J. Hassell of Childress, and Mrs. W. P:. Close of Kirkland. Pallbearers were Bud Adams, E. M. Watson, Vivian Jones, Fay Eatherly, Geo. B. Howard, Jack Sides, Clinton McGhee and Harold Wright.  The flower committee was composed of Mmes. Lou Nell Collins, Grace Cartledge, Minnie Watson, Kathryn McGhee, Gladys Benham, Lena Howard, Vergie Wallis, Pearl Perkins and Christine Williams.  Burial was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. ADAMS*

Childress - Velma V. Adams, 89, a former Childress resident, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, in Grand Prairie. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. Mrs. Adams was born in Olympus and lived in Lonnie and Olympus until her family moved into Childress in 1964. She lived in Childress until 1984, when she moved to Hillsboro. In 1985, she moved to Mount  Pleasant and lived there for about a year before moving to Grand  Prairie in 1994. She married Gordon A. Adams in 1924 at Hollis, Okla. He died in 1969. She also was preceded in death by a son, James B. Adams, in 1996. She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist church.  Survivors include two sons, Troy Adams of Arlington and Edwin A. Adams of Gustine, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. ACKERSON*

Childress - Maxine Everett Ackerson, 82, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Robertson of First United Methodist Church of Childress officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. Mrs. Ackerson was born in Seneca, Mo., and had lived in Childress for the past six years. She taught school at Borger High School, Frank Phillips Jr. College and Madison High in Houston. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Everett, in 1970 and by her second husband, Jay Ackerson, in 1991. Survivors include a son, Phil. Everett of Temple; a daughter, Nancy Garrison of Tell; a sister, Helen Schultze of Fairland, Okla.; and seven grandchildren. Published November 5, 1999

 

ALBRIGHT*

Childress – Funeral services forDillard Truman Albright, 63, were Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Newberry Funeral Chapel. Rev. Jack Collier, pastor of the Parkview Baptist Church, officiated and burial was in Childress Cemetery. Pallbearers were Earl Scarbrough, Ray Don Williams, Horace Dill, Raymond Atkinson, Odis Coats and Don McFarland. Mr. Albright died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the family home of an apparent heart attack.  He was a retired oil company employee.  He was born August 20, 1910, in Lamar County and moved to Childress in 1963 from Galveston. Survivors include his wife, Opal, of the home, one son, Jack Dennis Albright of Nacogdoches; six sisters, Mrs. Jetta Williams and Mrs. Etta Sims, both of Childress, Mrs. Tommie Wormsley of Lakeview, Mrs. Christine Nesbitt of Dallas, Mrs. Carol Ray Alexander of Fort Worth, Mrs. Mary Helen Morris of :Paris and seven grandchildren.  Published June 9, 1974

 

ALEXANDER*

Childress – Funeral services held today forMrs. Claude Alexander, at the First Presbyterian church, a former resident, who died early Tuesday morning in an Arlington, Texas hospital. Rev. Wilson Cole, pastor of the church, conducted the services. Interment was in the Childress cemetery under direction of the Newberry Funeral Home. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. P. H. Edwards of Baltimore, Maryland and Mrs. Charles Dickey of Austin, Texas. Other survivors are two brothers, J. M. Crews of Childress and Knox Crews of Plainview, and one sister, Mrs. Jimmie Nesbitt of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mrs. Alexander was born on December 16, 1874 and moved to Childress with her mother, brothers and sisters when she was 12 yeas old. Her father, Wm. Crews, came from Williamson county and filed a claim on land here and returned to Williamson county to bring his family to Childress. On the trip back to Childress, Mr. Crews died and the mother and children continued on to make their home here. They settled on the land the claim was filed on, southwest of Childress.  The trip to Childress was made in a covered wagon, bringing with them their cattle and horses. Mrs. Alexander’s mother was one of the early pioneer religious women in Childress.  She organized the first :Presbyterian Sunday school class and held regular Sunday school sessions in a dugout.  Mrs. Alexander was a member of one of the first High School graduating classes. Like her mother, she took an active part in church work and as a young woman with a good voice, she was in charge of church music. She had been a teacher of Sunday school classes, from primary to senior, ever since she was a small girl.  In 1901 she married Claude Alexander.  The Wedding was in the old Southern Presbyterian church where the present Presbyterian church now stands.  They moved to Wellington soon after where both taught school, later returning to Childress to teach in local schools. They bought a farm, four miles southwest of town, where they lived until Mr. Alexander died on April 5, 1949. Following the death of Mr. Alexander, she moved to town and would spend several months at a time with her daughters before coming back to Childress for brief stays. The pioneer Childress woman was a member of the Department Club and Highpoint Home Demonstration club, but spent most of her time working with the church. She was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon by the side of her late husband in the local cemetery.  Pallbearers were Charles Harrison, Tom Hardin, Joe J. Ward, John Herren, Ralph McBride and Rush Record. Published July 30, 1952

 

ALLEN*

Childress - Betty Ann Allen, 61, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Wood, minister of music, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Allen was born in Hamilton, N.Y., and had lived in Childress for 16 years. She married Oscar James Allen in 1956 at Baltimore. He died in 1988. Mrs. Allen began working at Childress Regional Medical Center in 1982 as a registered nurse. In 1987, she was promoted to operating room supervisor. She later was named director of nursing. She was promoted to director of nursing of prison health care in 1991. She became administrator of nurses of prison health care in 1993. Mrs. Allen was an Army veteran and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, Roy Allen, James Allen and John Allen, all of Childress, and Wayne Allen of Borger; seven brothers, Bill Reed of Sturbridge, Mass., Charles Reed and Gordon Reed, both of Hubbardsville, N.Y., Donald Reed of Holland, Mass., Richard Reed of Silver Beach, N.C., Robert Reed of Hamilton and Mannard Reed; and 11 grandchildren. ALVERSON*
Childress - Morris S. Alverson, 86, of Brownfield, died Sunday, December 5, 1999. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Childress Cemetery with the Rev. Kerry Wood officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Mr. Alverson was born in Childress County, the son of Charles Wilburn and Donna Jane Hudson Alverson. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include a brother, William David Alverson of Del Rio, and a sister, Mary Ruth Hamilton of Childress. Published December 7, 1999


ANDREWS*

Childress - Ardeen "Beanie" Andrews, 76, of Amarillo, died Sunday, March, 22, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Westview Christian Church with the Rev. Charles Waugh, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Childress Cemetery at Childress by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle, Amarillo. Mr. Andrews was born in Childress. He attended schools in Childress and Community Center. He graduated in 1941 as president of his senior class. He managed automobile dealerships in Childress, Dumas and Colorado Springs, Colo. He was named one of the outstanding sales managers in the nation by Ford Motor Co. in 1975.  Mr. Andrews also owned and managed a furniture store in Dumas. After retiring from Heath Furniture, he and his wife were tour escorts for Trailways Tours for 10 years. While living in Dumas, Mr. Andrews was an elder and trustee for First Christian Church. He was a deacon and trustee for Westview Christian Church in Amarillo. He married Colleen Albritton in 1945 at Childress. Survivors include his wife; a son, Gary "Andy" Andrews of Cameron; two sisters, his twin, Kathleen Andrews, of Childress and Ernestine Hackler of Amarillo; three brothers, Myrl Andrews of Fort Worth, Howard Andrews of Childress and Clyde Andrews of Plainview; and three grandchildren. The family will be at 6501 Falcon. They request memorials be to the Westview Christian Church building fund, 6810 Hillside, Amarillo, Texas 79109; Published March 23, 1988

 

ARMSTRONG

Childress – Funeral services for D. A. Armstrong, 83, were held at 10 a.m. today at the Newberry Funeral Chapel. E. A. Sanders, minister of the Kirkland Church of Christ, conducted the services and burial was in the Kirkland Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gus McDaniel, Buster Garner, Jimmy Bridges, Howard Clifton, Jimmy Hackler and Don Gage.  Mr. Armstrong, a retired trucker, died at 2;15 a.m. yesterday in Lawton, Okla. He was born December 31, 1886, in Bonham.  Survivors include two sons, Stanley Armstrong of Sacramento, Calif., David A. Armstrong of Chico, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. Celia Hollowpetter of Chico and seven grandchildren.  Marvin T. Clements, a nephew, lives in Childress. Published July 2, 1970

 

ARMSTRONG

Childress – Rev. E. C. Armstrong, former pastor of the King Memorial Methodist church, died on May 25 in Abilene. Funeral services were conducted May 27th at the First Methodist church in Abilene with burial in Belton, Texas. Survivors include his wife and one son, both of Abilene. Childress - J. W. Arnn  To Be Buried Here This Afternoon March 12, 1940.  The funeral of J. W. Arnn, 70, who died Sunday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Free, is being conducted this afternoon at First Methodist Church by Rev Orion W. Carter, assisted by Rev Charles T. Tally of First Baptist church. Pall bearers are Carl Parrish, Leo Parrish, Ewell Johnson, Noel Johnson, Sherman Smith and Buel Nance.  Flowers are in charge of Mmes. Jimmy Williamson, Dewey Smith, Ollie Witcher, Frank Weddington, Paul Rogers, Elbert Kelley and Miss Elizabeth Burns. Mr. Arnn has been a resident of Littlefield in recently. Survivors in the immediate family are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Trigg of Alvin and Mrs. Free; and six sons, E. F. and A. M of Littlefield, V. L. and E. J. of Childress, Bill of Centralia, Ill, and Tom of Tyler. Other relatives here for the funeral include Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Tunnel of Lake Dallas, Mr. and Mrs. George Smith and son, Thurman, of Morton, Mrs. J. H. Arnn of Oklahoma City and Mrs. G. L. Beene and daughter Linda Gayle of Clovis, N. ATKINSON*

Childress – Funeral services for Harvey “Pete” Wayne Atkinson, 56, a former Kirkland resident, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Schooler-Gordon chapel with Mike Henderson of the Childress church of Christ officiating. He died Wednesday in Shreveport, LA where he had lived for 28 years.  Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. He was born in Garden Valley August 14, 1926.  He was an employee of  Morton Salt Co., a member of the Westview Christian Church in Shreveport, Qeensboro Masonic Lodge, the E. L. Karubath Shrine, VFW and Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Bettye of the home; two sons, Stephen Atkinson of Shreveport, and Gary Atkinson of Dallas; his parents, Raymond and Annie Atkinson of Kirkland, a brother Bobby Atkinson of Navisoto, four grandchildren and one great-grand-child, and several uncles and aunts.  Pallbearers will be J. W. Templeton, Kenneth Ellis, James Hassell, Ronald Lynn Atkinson, Marty Turentine, and Lessee Myers.  Honorary pallbearers will be E. W. Clanton and Richard Latson, both of Shreveport. The family requests memorials to Westview Boys Home in Hollis in lieu of flowers. Published August 1, 1983.

Childress – Graveside Rites are Held Here forMrs. Jewel Austin. Funeral services for former Childress resident, Mrs. Jewel Guillet Austin, 82, of Stamford, Texas were to have been conducted at 1;30 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church of Stamford with Dr. James R. Enfield, pastor, officiating. Graveside rites were held in Childress Cemetery at 5 p.m. Saturday, under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Born March 18, 1897, in Missouri, she taught at the College of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M., until her retirement in 1970.  She moved back to Stamford at that time. Survivors include one son, Raymond H. Austin, of Austin, Texas; three brothers, N. J. Guillet of Wichita Falls, Henry Guillet of Andrews, Texas, and John Guillet of Stamford; two sisters, Mrs. O. D. Middleton of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Robert Owen of Bront, Texas; and three grandchildren. Published March 1, 1980

 

AVARY*

Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps Service Number 668124
Killed in Action   Died August 18, 1950 in Korea
Corporal Avary was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on August 18, 1950. Corporal Avary was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal..
Corporal Charles Russell Avary was killed in action in the dark, early hours on the morning of August 18. His buddy, PFC Bob Baughan, was injured trying to get medical help for him. In September, Corporal Bob Baughan escorted Russell's body to Childress, Texas, for burial.  Published US Marine Corps press release

 

BIDDY*

Childress – Services for Floyd E. Biddy, 77, were to be held at 2:30 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church with Dr. J. V. Cohorn, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in Childress Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors.  Mr. Biddy died Friday afternoon in High Plains Hospital at Amarillo. He was born June 11, 1905 in Cottle County.  He had been a farmer in the High Point Community for 30 years before moving to Childress about 10 years ago. Mr. Biddy was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, April 21, 1978. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Dr. Cohorn’s Sunday School Class. Survivors are his wife, Suephelia of the home; two sisters, Devilla Cupp of Alpine and Ora Boyd of Blair, Okla.; and nephew, Leon Boyd of Oklahoma City, Okla., and several nieces and nephews.  Published May 29, 1983

 

BIGGERSTAFF*

Childress – Mrs. E. L. (Ida Mary) Biggerstaff, age 98, died at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday in Randolph, Kentucky. She moved to Texas in March 1892 from Kentucky settling in Childress. She had resided in Childress since that time except for 11 years which were spent in Estelline. Mrs. Biggersaff attended school in Glasgow, Kentucky. Following graduation she taught briefly in Kentucky schools before moving to Childress.  She taught in the Childress school system for several years before her retirement. Mrs. Biggerstaff was a very active member of the Central Christian church.  Her main interest for the last few yeas have been her family, her church, flowers and short trips. Survivors are one son, E. L. Biggerstaff Jr. of Pampa; three daughters, Mrs. J. Ralph Lee of Colorado City; Miss Ethel Biggerstaff and Mss Kate Biggerstaff, both of Childress; three grandchildren, Ensign Ronald Biggerstaff of Pensacola, Florida, J. Rodney Lee of Waco and Mrs. Ted Doesenroth of Austin; two great grandchildren, Rebecca Ann Lee and Ralph Norman Lee, both of Waco; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at 4 p.m. today (Thursday) from the Central Christian church with Dr. Burgin Watkins, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating.  Interment was in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were Fay Eatherly, Jerry Hampton, Jim Parker, Vivian Jones, Tom Lemen and Earl Preston. Published October 19, 1967

 

BLAIR

Childress – Services for former resident Georgia Jones Blair, 76, of Amarillo were Saturday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with Rev. Roy Wheeler officiating.  Burial was in Llano Cemetery by N. S. Griggs.  Mrs. Blair died Friday.  She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Jones and valedictorian of the graduating class of 1926 at Childress High School  She married Don Blair of Childress in 1926.  They moved to Amarillo from Childress some  40 years ago. Mrs. Blair was a charter member of the Paramount Terrace Christian Church and the Truthseekers Sunday School Class. She was a Sunday School teacher for 14 years. She was a member of the 20th Century Club, president of Untied Church Women’s Association, and for 14 years was forwarding agent for Christian Radio Mission.  She was a retired salesperson with Colberts.  Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mrs. John Bishop of Amarillo and Mrs. Alex Bills of Oklahoma City, Okla; a sister Mrs. Henry Webb of Childress; two nieces, Mrs. Claude Lane and Mrs. Ben Marrs of Childress; a sister in law Mrs. Bryce Marshall of Childress; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Published June 12, 1983

 

BOWMAN*

Childress – Carl B. Bowman, father of Glen D. Bowman of Childress, died about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night while visiting at the home of Leslie Bruce at Parnell. Mr. Bowman was also a Parnell resident. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ in Estelline, by J. C. Stepp, minister from Clarendon and G. B. Shelbern, minister from Amarillo, Interment will be in the Hulver cemetery by Spicer Funeral Home of Memphis. Mr. Bowman was born January 13, 1889, in Little River County, Arkansas, and had been a farmer and resident of Hall County since 1908.  He married Miss Quay V. Bruce April 9, 1916, at Parnell and was a member of the Church of Chris. Survivors are his widow of the home; one other son, C. B. Bowman, Jr., of Amarillo; two daughters, Mrs. May Fair Meacham and Mrs. Del Ray House, both of Turkey; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, A. E. Bowman of Brownfield, Clarence Bowman of Lubbock and Jimmy Bowman of Memphis; two sisters, Mrs. Wayne Chambles of Mankins and Mrs. Labe Mitchell of Memphis.  Published September 11, 1963.

Childress – Sarah Jane Cooper Bowman Rites Held Today at the Baptist Church - Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah J. Bowman who died at her home, 807 Ave D, NW, Monday, August 3, 1936, at noon will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock at the First Baptist Church by Rev Joe H. Hankins assisted by Rev. George Curlee. Mrs. Bowman, born August 16,1852, who was 83 years and 11 months of age at the time of her death, is survived by four daughters, Miss Flonnie Bowman, Childress; Mrs. Jenny Harris, Amarillo; Mrs. Beulah Freeman, Tecumseh, Okla., and Mrs. D. C. Hayes, Tellaque, Okla.; and four sons, J. E. Bowman of Carey; D. F. Arnold, of Carey; E. T. Bowman, Lake Charles, La, and S. H. Bowman, Hollis Okla.  Her husband, Samuel H. Bowman, a CSA veteran, preceded her in death in 1918. Burial will be in the Childress cemetery by John O. McMinn. .Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Paul Arnold, Tom Arnold, Morgan Bowman, Hardy Harris, Talma Bowman, and Reuben Arnold. The flower bearers will be her granddaughters, Flonnie Bowman, Mary Anis Bowman, Mrs. Buster Musgrove, Mrs. Delmar Cawthon, Mrs. Alva Wilson, Mrs. Murray Anderson, and Mrs. Red Mills. BROWN*

Childress - Bill L. Brown, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim McCurley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Brown was born in Acme. He graduated from Childress High School and attended Arizona State College. He was stationed with the Army Air Corps at Bolling Field in Washington, D.C. He was a passenger train foreman for the CB&O Railroad from 1963 until 1967, when he was transferred to Alliance, Neb., as general foreman of the railroad. In 1968, he was promoted to general car foreman with the Fort Worth & Denver Railroad. He retired in 1981 after 33 years of service with the Burlington Lines. Mr. Brown had served on the Childress Regional Medical Center board of directors and the Childress City Council. He was a member of the Burlington Club and the Scottish Rite and Commandery. He was a member and Master Mason with Childress Masonic Lodge No. 695. He married Margaret Jo Taylor in 1946 at Childress, Published Feb. 15, 1998

Washington, D.C. SGT David W. Brown
 The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to David W. Brown (6296430), Sergeant, U.S. Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Member of the crew of a B-17 Heavy Bomber in the 93d Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group (H), FIFTH Air Force, while participating in bombing missions on 6 and 7 August 1942, against enemy Japanese targets in support of Allied landings in the Solomon Islands. The personal courage and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Brown on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.

BURTON*

Childress -: Funeral services for Edward Cortez Burton, 50, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist church, with the Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor, officiating.Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Newberry Funeral Home.  Mr. Burton died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday June 16,1968 in Temple.. Born September10,1907 in Hall County, GA., he come to Childress in 1916 and worked at the Childress Co-op gin for many years.  He was a veteran of World War II.  He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ethel M. Childress - Rosie LeeLewis Calcote, 74, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jon Crosby, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. A longtime Childress resident, Mrs. Calcote was born in Quitman. She was a presser at Hargrave Laundry for 10 years and a nurse's aide at Twilight Nursing Home. She married J. V. Calcote in 1983 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; two stepsons, Aaron W. Calcote of Amarillo and Lloyd R. Calcote of Tennessee; two brothers, Floyd Lewis of Elk City, Okla., and William Ray Lewis of Decatur; two sisters, Laverne Portwood of Childress and Mollie Slape of Amarillo; and two step grandchildren.  Published November 4, 1998.

Childress – Services are set for 2 p.m. Monday for Bessie Campbell, 88, of Childress in St. Johns Baptist Church. Officiating will be L. F. Phillips. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the directions of Newberry Funeral Home. She was born November 5, 1892 in Arkansas and came to Childress in 1938.  She married Robert Campbell in 1953. He preceded her in death October 4, 1975. She was also a member of St. Johns Baptist Church. Her sole survivor is one son, Elzie Berry of Phoenix, Arizona. Published March 22, 1981.

 

CARADINE*

Childress -  Mrs.Mary Emma Caradine, age 82, died suddenly at the Childress hospital at 6:45 a. m. Monday, June 8, 1968, after being admitted about four hours earlier.  She was born March 13, 1882 in Morgan County, Kentucky, to James Franklin and Martha Vest Pieratt. She married Mark A. Caradine on July 12, 1902 in Santa Anna, Texas. They came to Childress in 1906 and she had lived here since that time. Mr. Caradine died on January 8, 1927.  She was a member of the Central Christian church. Survivors include one son, Arthur Caradine of Childress; three sisters, Mrs.Florence Hassell, Mrs. Naomi Key and Mrs. Jessie Key, all of Childress, two brothers, R. H. Pieratt of Childress and Buford Pieratt of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Lynza Juan and Arlyna Caradine of Childress. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Christian church conducted by the minister, Rev. Curtis Keith. Interment was in the Childress cemetery under direction of the Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were U. S. Fromm, Ben Walker, George West, Richard Bird, Mike Wilson, Hollis Wilson, J. D. Michie and Vivian Jones. Published June 9, 1968

Childress – Andra Lene Caradine succumbs to burns.  Andra Lene Caradine, year and nine months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Caradine of Childress, will be buried here this afternoon following funeral service at the First Methodist church.  The child died Friday night May 1, 1942, in the local hospital from severe burns she received when she fell into a tub of boiling water at her parents home last Wednesday. Andra Lene was born Jul 23, 1940 in Childress. Funeral rites will be held at 4 o’clock this afternoon with Rev. Orion Carter of the First Methodist church in charge, assisted by. Frank Travis of the Presbyterian church and Rev. O. A. McBrayer of the King Memorial Methodist church.  Pallbearers will be Jimmy Williamson, Robert Davenport, Ben Walker, all of Childress and Claude Hipps of Electra.  Flowers will be handled by Mmes. Cecil Pryor, Robert Davenport, Jimmy Williamson, Ben Walker, Presley Wright and Ed Warren, and Misses Mildred :Phillips and Nell Rogers. CARPENTER*

Childress -  George L. Carpenter. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon for George L. Carpenter, 56, Childress county farmer who was killed in an automobile accident five miles west of Childress Tuesday night, The services, held at 2 o 'clock, were at the First Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. J. R. Grant, in charge. Burial was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral home. Mr. Carpenter was born in 1883. Serving as active pallbearers were O. H. Smith, H. M. Jeter, Ernest Arnn, M. B. Inman, and Joe King.  Honorary pallbearers were Leonard White, Arch Hays, Mote Givens, Frank Givens, Leo Preston, Killeen Atkinson and Charles Ellison. Carpenter had farmed in this county a number of years and was well-known here.  He was a member of the First Baptist church.  He is survived by the widow; a step-daughter, Miss Virginia Clemons; a brother, R. H. Carpenter of Waco; and four sisters, Mrs. Anna House of Waco, Mrs. W. L. Harris of West; Mrs. Cora Hughes of Hillsboro and Mrs. Will Jones of Meridian. Carpenter was fatally injured when the car occupied by him and Mrs. Carpenter collided with a machine driven by Wade Jones, a Carey youth, at an intersection of lateral roads five miles west of Childress early Tuesday night. He died in a hospital here three hours later. Mrs. Carpenter was not seriously injured, but is believed on the road to recovery, and Jones was slightly injured. Published  by The Childress Index 1939

Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Shellie Carrick, long-time Childress county resident, were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Newberry Chapel by Rev. R. C. Nixon, pastor of the Cee Vee Methodist church, and Rev. James D. Smith. Mrs. Carrick, 70, passed away Tuesday at 2:15 a.m., November 20, 1957 at 910 Ave F, Southwest.  She was born on April 7, 1887, in Hunt county, Texas.  She had lived in Childress county since 1908. coming here from Fannin county, Texas.  She was a member of the Methodist church. Pallbearers were R. E. Gentry, Lee Hollingsworth, G. W. Jenkins, R. B. Ranson, Jim Phillips and Marvin Crain. Survivors include her husband, W. A. Carrick of Tell; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond Richardson of :Pasadena, Texas; five sons, Cecil Carrick of Tell, Otto Carrick of El Paso, Leslie Carrick of Cee Vee, Gene Carrick of Borger and Shelby Carrick of Turkey; six sisters, Mrs. Florence Macon of Ft. Worth, Mrs. Ada Eddins of Durant, Okla, Mrs. Ella Armstrong and Miss Ethel Clements of Hobbs, New Mexico, Mrs. Tina Craig of Dallas and Miss Myrtle Felty of Childress and 12 grandchildren. Childress – Mrs. Murray (Grace) Cartlidge, age 57, long time resident of Kirkland, died at 2 a.m. Thursday, July 9th, in Saint Anthony’s Hospital at Amarillo. Mrs. Cartlidge had been in ill health for some time and had undergone heart surgery Wednesday morning in Saint Anthony Hospital. Funeral service was from the First Baptist church in Kirkland Thursday at 2 .p.m. with Rev. Jay Riley officiating. Interment was held in the Kirkland Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mrs. Cartlidge was born March 23, 1913, in Childress and had lived in the Kirkland community  40 years. The former Miss Grace King, she married Murray Cartlidge June 24, 1933 in Childress. Survivors are her husband, Murray, of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Dixon of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Mrs. Sue Cockran of Fort Worth, five sisters, Mrs. Etta Williams, Mrs. Cloyce (Ernestine) Holeman, Mrs. Jud (Minnie) Clements, Mrs. Sylvester (Lurlene) White and Mrs. Joe (Ceil) Hix, Jr., all of Childress; two brothers, B. Childress – John Franklin Cates, age 80, died at Childress General Hospital at 10:50 p.m. Thursday.  He was a member of the First United Methodist church.  He married Miss Myrtle Morrisett, October 11, 1914 in Gem City, Texas, and they came to Childress in 1925 from Durham, Oklahoma. He operated a creamery from 1925 until 1945, then in 1945, he opened the Mercury Agency which he operated until 1953. Since that time, he had farmed. He was active in Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations, and he was a charter member of the Elks Lodge, ‘Survivors are: wife, Mytrle of the home; two sons, Jack of Childress and ‘Ted of Amarillo; two daughters, Lanoma Bruce of Childress and Mrs. Rose Curtis of Santa Anna, California; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Rader of New Mexico; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Newberry Chapel with the Rev. Marvin James, pastor of The First United Methodist Church officiating. Childress – Graveside services for Louvada Cawthon, 75, were to be held at 3 p.m. at Childress Cemetery today.  Mrs. Cawthon, a sister of Reuben Arnold of Childress, was a former resident of Carey and native of Childress  She died Sunday in an Amarillo hospital. She was a member of the Southwest Church of Christ and was the wife of the late Delmar Cawthon.  Other survivors include two sons, Bill of Midland and Charles of Big Springs; two daughters, Robille “Bobbie” Larson and Wanda Mitchell, both of Amarillo; one brother, Paul Arnold of Lubbock, a sister, Lee Ellen Cuttings of Oklahoma City, Okla; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Childress - Mrs. W. P. Close Dies; Services Wednesday. Mrs. Almodie Pieratt Close, age 78, died at 8:50 p.m. Monday, April 23, 1962. in the Methodist Hospital at Lubbock where she had been a patient since suffering a broken hip in a fall recently. She was born January 18, 1884 in Morgan County, Kentucky, to James F. and Martha Vest Pieratt. She and W. P. “Pink” Close were married in 1902 in Santa Anna and moved to Kirkland in 1905. She was active in club and community activities in Kirkland and was a member of the First Methodist Church.  Survivors are her husband, W. P. Close of Kirkland; two daughters, Mrs. Tommy Williamson of Childress, and Mrs. Roy Furr of Lubbock; one son, Garth Close of Lubbock; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Caradine, Mrs. E. J. Hassell, Mrs. Jess Key and Mrs. Roy Key, all of Childress; two brothers, Buford Pieratt of Amarillo and Russ Pieratt of Childress; nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Lester L. Hill, pastor, and Rev. E. E. White of Lubbock, former pastor.  Interment was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Pallbearers were John Turk fowler, Virgie Ellis, Ralph Sides, T. E. Carter, Bert Hargrave, J. B. Collins, Garland Collins and Gus McDaniel.

Childress – Services Pending. W. P. (Pink) Close, Jr, 42-year-old Community Center farmer, was found dead at the family farm home about 9 o’clock this morning, It was believed that Mr. Close died sometime Sunday night, December 8, 1957.  Funeral services by Newberry Funeral Home are pending.  Mr. Close was born at Kirkland November 22, 1915, and attended Kirkland School. He had farmed in the Community Center community all his adult life except for three or four years when he was associated with Furr Food stores at Lubbock. He served several terms on the Community Center School Board, and was a member of the Childress First Methodist Church. Mr. Close married Miss Jewel Clements in 1936 at Childress. Survivors are his wife; one son, Gary Close of Lubbock; one granddaughter of Lubbock; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pink Close, Sr., of Kirkland; two sisters, Mrs. T. E. Williamson of Childress and Mrs. Roy Furr of Lubbock; and one brother, Garth Close of Lubbock. Published December 9, 1957

 

CORDELL*

Childress – District Clerk Harold Cordell, age 75, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday in a Quanah convalescent home. He was born August 10, 1887 in Texas and came to Childress county in 1908. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.  Mr. Cordell had been in the abstract business for several years, served as county clerk, county Democratic party chairman for several years and was district clerk at the time of his death. Mrs. Cordell preceded him in death in 1935. Survivors are four sons, H. D. Cordell Jr., Rowden  Cordell and Fred Harry Cordell, all of Childress, and Frank Thomas Cordell of Fort Worth; two daughters, Mrs. Della Beth Brown of Amarillo and Mrs. Maurine Morgan of Vernon; one sister, Mrs. Grace Hall of Childress; one brother, Frank Cordell of North Hollywood, California; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Thursday morning from Newberry Chapel, conducted by Rev. Edgar Graham of Winters, former pastor of the Presbyterian church here.  Interment was in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were Paul Goodson, Allen Harp, Ben Hardison, U. S. Fromm, Jack Preston, Howard Preston, Wilmer Rutledge and J. H. Collier.  Published June 20, 1963

 

CREWS*

Childress - James Martin Crews dies August 20, 1962. Martin was the son of Thomas Anderson Crews and Martha Mary McCoy, born November 1, 1884. Siblings were Charley, Rush, Knox, Albert, Luella, and Hadena Crews. Martin married Annie Lee Jefferies in Childress in 1909. Their children were Annie Ruth and Virginia Crews. Mr. Crews was a very influential citizen of this area of Texas, a banker, rancher, and numerous other enterprises. Martin moved to Childress County with his parents as a youngster, and at the age of 10, in 1894, he was working for the Mill Iron Ranch. In 1905, Martin organized the First State Bank of Kirkland, and subsequently organized and/or was associated with more banks in the area, including the First State Bank of Tell, Childress Farmers and Mercantile Bank, and other banks in Hollis, Oklahoma, Dumas, Wellington, Idalou, Turkey, Estelline, Seminole, Odessa, and Plainview and the First National Bank of Childress.  In 1909. Martin and his brother, Charles, purchased 15,000 acres in Childress County and operated their ranch as Crews Brothers. Mr. Crews was known and respected as he was fair in his business, and generous to a fault. Martin was a civic minded individual, and was a charter member of the Childress Rotary Club, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Elks Lodge. In 1949, he was given a fifty year pin as a member of the Childress Lodge No. 695. He served as president of the Childress Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the City Council. Martin served as president of the Panhandle Bankers Association, and a member of the Texas Bankers Association. He served several years as director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He served as vice president of the Santa Rosa Round-up from its inception until his death. For many years he served as a member of the executive board of the Northwest Texas Area council of boy Scouts and was a charter member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Burial in the Childress Cemetery. Childress – Mrs. John Knox Crews, age 80, died at 2;45 a.m. Saturday  in her home in Plainview.  She was born Bertha Evelyn Broyles on January 14, 1887 in Graham. She married John Knox Crews on August 11, 1909. He preceded her in death on August 21, 1967. He was a retired rancher and banker at the time of his death.  Mrs. Crews was a founder and one of he members of the grace Presbyterian church in Plainview and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Brent Norman of Amarillo; a brother, Jack Rochelle of Lamesa; three sisters, Mrs. Jim Hankins of Dalhart, Mrs. K. W. Jones of Amarillo, Mrs. Logan Briscoe of Fairfax, California; a granddaughter, Mrs. Brenda Park of Vienna, Virginia; and two great grandchildren. Graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Monday in Childress cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert McGehee, minister of the Grace Presbyterian church in Plainview, and was under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Published October 19, 1967.

 

CURLEE*

Childress –Funeral services for Rev. George A. Curlee, retired Baptist minister, were conducted Sunday, November 21,1957, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church by Rev. Joe Allen, pastor, Rev. Gordon Highfill, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church and Rev. Ira L. Parrack. Rev. Curlee, 85, passed away in the Childress General Hospital Friday at 10;55 p.m. November 17, 1957, after a long illness. He as born on May 5, 1872, in Tennessee, and came to Childress county in 1920 as pastor of the First Baptist church where he served for nine years. He also pastored the Calvary Baptist church for three years. He organized the Bethel Baptist Mission in 1953 and served as pastor as long as his health would permit.  He also organized the Pleasant Park Baptist church of San Antonio. He was graduated from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth and the Graduate work at the Seminary in Louisville, Ky, and at Baylor University. He taught school for several years before entering the ministry. Among his pastorates were the First Baptist church of Stephenville, Pittsburgh and Commanche. He served as moderator of the Red Fork Baptist Association for several years. Pallbearers were C. E. Richardson, J. B. Holland, J. B. Johnson, Clarence Smith, Earl Tosh and Bob Lankford.  Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. E. D. Reece of Ft. Worth, Mrs. T. C. Jones of Waco, Mrs. W. T. Williams of Dallas and Mrs. A. L. Heath of Childress. Burial was held in the Childress cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away in 1954. Newberry Funeral Home was in charge of burial arrangements. Published November 21, 1957

Childress - Robert Ray Custer Jr., 78, died Sunday, May 23, 2004. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Childress Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home.  Mr. Custer was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Childress. He married Irma Nichols on Dec. 19, 1943, in Hollis, Okla. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas Custer of Dewitt, Neb., and Nick Custer of Childress; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family suggests memorials be to the Veteran Memorial Fund in Childress.

Amarillo - Vaneta Daily, 81, of Amarillo, died Monday, June 7, 1999. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Kirkland Cemetery at Kirkland with the Rev. John Gillespie, of First Baptist Church at Benjamin, and Steven Waterhouse, pastor of Westcliff Bible Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Mrs. Daily was born in Atoka and raised in rural Hardeman and Childress counties. She moved to Amarillo in 1956 and to El Paso in 1965. She returned to Amarillo in 1974. She was a homemaker. She married Robert R. Daily in 1939 at Eldorado, Okla. He died in January, 1998. Survivors include a son, Robert R. Daily Jr. of Amarillo; a brother, Jack C. Mock of Amarillo; two grandchildren; and two great-grand-children. The family requests memorials be to Goodwill Industries, 209 E. 17th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79102. Published June 7, 1999

 

DANIELS

Childress -  A/C Rex Daniels, 23-year-old Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet, who lived in Childress a number of years, was killed Monday night, Sept 27, 1943, in a trainer plane crash at Pixley, CA. Daniel’s home was in Amarillo where he had. lived for several years and was well known in athletic circles.  He was in the same squadron with Sydney Key, of Kirkland, stationed at Minter Field, Calif. And was on a routine flight when the fatal accident occurred. He apparently leaped from the plane but his parachute failed to open. The wrecked plane crashed in the yard of a residence at Pixley and Daniels body was found Tuesday morning about a mile away, his parachute unopened. The body will be taken to Amarillo for burial. Daniels is survived by his widow and small son of Amarillo, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Daniels of Texline, a sister, Mrs. R. T. Hamm, and a brother, W. G. Daniels of Childress; and ten other brothers and sisters, one of whom is Captain B. L. Childress – Perry Wade “Pete” Davis, 84, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Childress Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Robertson of  First Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Mr. Davis was born in Hall County. He was a farmer and rancher. He had served on the school board in Estelline and was a road commissioner. Mr. Davis was a member of First Methodist Church of Childress, a member of the Scottish Rite since 1949 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie, in 1991. Survivors include a son, Smokey Davis of Childress; a daughter, Bobbie Fowler of Memphis; a brother, W. H. Tippet of Tell; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Published June 11, 1998.

 

DeARMOND*

Childress – James Henry DeArmond, 89, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 1968, at 1:30 a.m. at his home, 607 Avenue B, Southeast. Mr. DeArmond was born September 17, 1878 near Springfield, Missouri. He married Miss May Shaw February 18, 1906 in Trinidad, Colorado.  He came to Childress in 1918 from Segundo, Colorado. In 1923 he went back to Trinidad and later moved back to Childress. Mr. DeArmond was a blacksmith for the Burlington Railroad and retired in 1960. He is survived by his wife May; five daughters, Mrs. Eathuell Vaughn of Soccorro, New Mexico, Mrs. Ruby Kelley from Amarillo, Mrs. Leola Tonne, Mrs. Dorothy Dorton, from Bremerton, Washington, Mrs. Ruth Coffey from Roswell, New Mexico; and three sons, James DeArmond from Vancouver, Washington, Bob DeArmond from Abilene, and Walter F. DeArmond of Childress; one sister, Mrs. Clara Weaver of Seattle, Washington; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren. and one great, great granddaughter.  Funeral service was at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) from the First Baptist Church under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  The service was conducted by Rev. Joe Allen, pastor of the church. Burial was in the Childress cemetery. Pallbearers were Raymond Love, Joe Hardison, Bob Cagle, Sam Lewellen, Elbert Lewellen, and Columbus Lewellen. Published February 15, 1968.

Childress - Paul Pierce Dorman, 87, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Robertson of the church officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Dorman was born in Van Zandt County. He graduated from Childress High School in 1927. He worked for the Fort Worth / Denver Railroad for 44 years before retiring. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Inez Dorman; two sons, James Dorman of San Antonio and Gary Dorman of Fort Worth; a daughter, Paulette Martin of Childress; and eight grand-children. Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Odessa O. Dorsey, 88, formerly of Childress, are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Newberry Chapel with the Rev. James Price, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mrs. Dorsey died at 11 p.m. Thursday at a Claremore, Okla., hospital. She had been living with a daughter, Mrs. Edith Atkins of Vinita, Okla., for the past four and a half years. She left Childress to live in Oklahoma about five years ago.  Her husband, Charles, was a cotton buyer in Childress. He died here October 11, 1956. A native of Texas, she was born March 2, 1888. and came to Childress in the early 1900s. She was a member of the First Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Atkiins of Vinita and Mrs. Gale Pederson of Tulsa, Okla., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Pallbearers will be John Forbis, Elro Renfro, Gene Frisbie, Crews Bell, Willard Gray and John Robinson. Childress – Franklin Pierce Douglas, 66, died suddenly of a heart attack at the site of his home being built at 809 Avenue H. Northwest.  He was born August 9, 1896 in Childress County and is survived by his wife Pearl; one daughter, Mrs. Floyd Green of Childress; two sons, Roy E. Douglas and Harold W. Douglas of Robins Air Force Base, Macon Georgia. He is survived by five grandchildren and one great grand daughter. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Published October 11, 1962

Childress - Ruby Lois Douglas, 89, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Robertson, pastor, Jack McFarland, associate pastor of Living Word Community Church of Haltom City, and Don McFarland, pastor of Parkview Baptist Church of Childress, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Douglas was born in Brown County and was a resident of Childress since 1914. In 1995, she retired after 46 and a half years as a cosmetics consultant for Harp Pharmacy and Drug. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Business and Professional Women of Childress. She married Grady Douglas in 1926 at Childress. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1952 and by a daughter, Peggy Lois, in 1933. Survivors include three nephews, Don McFarland of Childress, Jack McFarland of North Richland Hills and Ron McFarland of Boise, Idaho; and four nieces, Rubye Carolyn Churchwell of Bedford, Ann Box of Childress, Elois Elkins of Caldwell and Bonnie Ruth Howard of Rogers, Ark. Childress – Funeral services for Luther Wilbern Draper, 61, a former Childress resident, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, in Lompoc, Calif., with burial there.  Mr. Draper died early Friday after having open heart surgery on Thursday. Mr. Draper is the son-in-law of Mrs. Joe Green and the brother-in-law of Mrs. Doyle Mooney, both of Childress. A native of Texas, he spent his youth in Childress and graduated from Childress High School. He was the son of the late Mrs. T. W. Colbert of Childress County. He had lived in California for the past 30 years and was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Lompoc. He and the former Shirley Ticer were married in Childress. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Lawana Turner of Springfield, Ore., Mrs. Shirlene McCollick and Mrs. Jacqueline Gaumer, both of Los Angeles; one son, Dean Wilbern of the home, and six grandchildren. Mrs. Green, and Mr and Mrs Mooney left last Saturday to be there for the funeral;  Published June 9, 1974

Childress – John Calvin Dry, 47, of Causey, N. M., died of a heart attack Friday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. Gene McCain in Childress. Funeral services will be conducted at 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the McMinn chapel by Rev. Don Culbertson of the King Memorial Methodist church. Burial will be in the Carey cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jack Lanham, Lloyd Moyers, Roy Conway, Simon Moore, Sam Hunter and Bill Jones.  On the flower committee are Miss Ella Mae Moore, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson, Mrs. Lois Arnold and Mrs. Pearl White.  Dry is survived by his widow; his father, J. Childress – Stanton East, age 57, long time resident of Kirkland, died Monday, January 4 of an apparent heart attack in Everman.  Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 6. from the Owens and Brumley Funeral Chapel in Fort Worth. Burial was in the Everman Cemetery. Mr. East was born in April of 1911.  He grew up in Kirkland and attended Kirkland schools. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh East are buried in the Kirkland Cemetery. He is survived by his wife; two children; two aunts, Mrs. Ethel Crowder, and Mrs. Malcum Bennett of Vernon and three cousins, Mrs. Gus McDaniel of Kirkland, J. Childress – Mrs. Winnie Josephine East died at 8:10 this morning in the Childress County General Hospital at 95 years of age. She lived at 509 Third Street, Northeast. Mrs. East was born April 18, 1856 in Himstead, Arkansas. She is survived by the following daughters: Mmes. Nora Pulliam of Childress, Elizabeth Cobern of Fort Worth, Charles Evans of San Angelo, Anna Rasmussen of Menard; and sons, John W. East of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Lenard East of Phoenix, Arizona, Estal East of Borger, and half brothers Harvey Wilson of Childress and Lake Wilson of Amarillo. She is also survived by six grand children. Mrs. East was a member of the Church of Christ. She lived in Childress from 1906 until 1917. since then she has lived in Healton, Oklahoma, Borger, Phillips  and Amarillo, moving back to Childress a year ago. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Newberry Funeral Home. Childress – William Archie Ellis, age 54, died at 6;05 a.m. Wednesday in the Childress hospital. He was taken to the hospital by Newberry ambulance about midnight Tuesday after suffering a heart attack.  He was born June 23, 1908 at Louisville, Texas and came to Childress county about 14 years ago from Rice, Texas. He was employed as a car-man’s helper, at the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad.  Ellis was a World War II veteran, a member of the Bible Baptist church and a member of the Carman’s Union, AF of L. Survivors are his wife, Josie Lee and daughter, Sonja Gay, of Childress; four brothers, Cratus, Arnold E. and  Sam E. Ellis of Dallas, and Earl Ellis of Corsicana; four sisters, Mrs. Ester Perkins, Mrs. Gladys Davis, Mrs. Emmie Eppler and Mrs. Elma Elam, all of Dallas.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Bible Baptist church and will be conducted by Rev. Luther R. Bradley, pastor, Interment will be in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Buford Taylor, Lowell Dement, Tex. L. Dement, Joe B. King, Glenn Bowman, Carl Crow, Louis Norris and Hubert Taylor. Published June 20, 1963.

OBIT: Childress – Funeral services for Vester Marvin “Red” Ferguson, 67, are set for 2 p.m. today in the Childress Assembly of God Church with the Reverend James Tynes, pastor, officiating. Reverend Joe S. Allen of the First Baptist Church, will assist. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Newberry Funeral Home.  Ferguson, a retired butcher, died at 2;45 a.m. Saturday in Childress General Hospital. Born September 13, 1909 in Jacksboro, he came to Childress county in 1928.  He married Miss Iva Boydston in 1935 in Childress.  Survivors include his wife, Iva, of the home, two sons, Kenneth of Irving,, and Robert of Childress; a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Laverne Gann of Duncan, Oklahoma; a brother, Velber Ferguson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a sister, Mrs. Frances Caldwell, also of Albuquerque;  two half-brothers, David Love of Duncan, Oklahoma; and Norman Love of Childress, seven grand children and one great grandchild. Pallbearers will be Jack Long, Don McFarland, Clyde Martin, Bud Coats, Raymond Love and Doc Rogers. FIRES*

Childress - Chester Richard Fires, Area Rancher, Dies Thurs. Chester R. Fires, 79, a prominent cattleman of the southeast Panhandle and life-long resident of Collingsworth and Childress Counties, died about 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 1974 in Raton, New Mexico. He had been in ill health a number of years, and during that time he and Mrs. Fires divided their time between Wellington and New Mexico, first at Taos, and for several years at Raton. The family home is 1109 Bowie Street. Mr. Fires was born at Childress July 23, 1895, the son of the late Judge A. J. fires and Margaret Warnick Fires.   Judge Fires, born in Clay County Indiana in 1860, came to Childress in 1897 and began the practice of law, concluding his long career with 8 years as judge of the 100th District.  Judge Fires drew up the first papers for the creation of Collingsworth County. As a rancher and stock farmer, Chester Fires was instrumental in the growth of Collingsworth County and Wellington, just as his father had a part in its creation.. Chester Fires was educated in the Childress Schools, then attended Austin College at Sherman and Texas Christian University at Fort Worth. In 1947, he moved to the Fires Ranch on Elm Creek, in the northeast part of the county, which was to be the base of his cattle operations. Childress – Jonas Vephus Foster, age 85, died Wednesday, October 11, 1967 in the Childress County hospital. He was born March 10, 1882 in Brazos county, Texas, and moved to Childress county in 1941 from Seymour. He lived at 703 Avenue G, Northeast. Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Willie Jo Hill of Childress, Alma Fay Davis of Lawton, Oklahoma and Serena Ann Smith of Amarillo; seven sons, Joseph R. Foster and Jonas Forster Jr. of Dallas, Lowell and Edwin Foster of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cecil Foster of the US Navy, Bobby Foster of Petaluma, California and William Foster of Amarillo; one step-son, W. A. Peterson of College Station; 31 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Monday from St. John Baptist church in Childress with C. D. Rochell of the Church of Christ in Duncan, Oklahoma, performing the service. Burial was in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Published October 19, 1967

Childress – Mrs. Louise Foust, 87-year-old Carey resident, died yesterday morning at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Bill Harrington, with whom she had lived for several years. The funeral is being conducted this afternoon at the Carey Baptist church by Rev. Herman Moseley and burial will be in the Carey cemetery under the direction of the McMinn Funeral home. Serving as pallbearers are Carl Parrish, Leo Parrish, Lloyd Moyer, Loren Trent, C. W. Brown, and Horace Hill. In charge of flowers are Oneda King, Irene Franks, Viola King, Clara Marie Johnson, Ora Irene Robinson and Lennie Mills. Mrs. Foust is survived by three sons, J. W. Foust of Corsicana, Charlie Foust of Glenrose and E. G. Foust of Hebron; a daughter, Mrs. Ellen May of Community Center; two brothers, S. H. FURR*

BorgerJohn Allan. Furr, father of Wade H. Furr of Borger, died yesterday morning, March 1, 1936, at 10:30 o'clock in a Wichita Falls hospital after a sudden illness. He was 84 years old. Funeral services for the elder Furr, a merchant for many years at Kirkland, were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Methodist church in Kirkland with the arrangements in charge of the H. B. Smith mortuary in Quanah. Mr. Furr had visited in Borger a number of times and had many friends here. While not connected with the Furr Food stores, his son, C. W. Furr of Amarillo is president of the chain and Wade Furr manages the Borger branch. Besides the two mentioned sons of John and late wife, Martha Ann Furr, survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Ray Dick of Amarillo, two other sons, Claude Furr of Plainview, C. N. Furr of McKinney and another daughter, Mrs. P.N. Fielder of Electra. Mr. and Mrs. Wade Furr and daughter, Juanita, and Miss Billye Faye Chandler, sister of Mrs. Furr, all of Borger, attended the last rites. (Published in Borger Daily Herald, March 2, 1936)

 

FURR*

Amarillo - Crone Webster Furr, died October 30th, 1945 in Amarillo. Born on May 8, 1878, in Stanly County, North Carolina, to John Allan and Martha Ann Furr. He married Annie Ida Furr (no relation) on December 14, 1896. Their children born were Roy, Key and Leona Furr. Crone Webster attended a country school near his birthplace. The family moved to Texas in 1894, and young Furr began farming near McKinney. He soon added a small crossroads grocery store near his farm and then in 1904 moved to Kirkland, Texas where he established the Kirkland Mercantile Company. Four years later he organized the First State Bank of Kirkland with an initial capital of $10,000. Furr bought the M System grocery franchise in the Amarillo area in 1924 and sold his Kirkland businesses in 1927 in order to concentrate on his grocery business. A year later he acquired the franchise for Piggly Wiggly stores in Amarillo. In 1934 he began to change the name of the Amarillo branch stores from Piggly Wiggly to Furr Food Stores. By 1946 his family-run enterprises included forty-three supermarkets in an area from Denver, Colorado, to El Paso, Texas; a creamery, bakery, packing plant, and warehouse in Lubbock; and a packing plant in Amarillo. Furr was for many years a deacon of the Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo. He was a member of the Lions Club and contributed to Clarendon and McMurry colleges and other institutions. C W died on October 30, 1946, in Amarillo and is buried in Llano Cemetery, Amarillo, Texas. Published November 1, 1946,

Childress -  T. M. Gaither Dies Tuesday in Local Hospital  T. M. Gaither, 91-year-old Childress resident died at a local hospital Tuesday morning, June 26, 1945. The funeral will be held at 3;00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Church of Christ at Carey, with Rev. Frank E. Chism of Amarillo in charge of the services. Interment will be made in the Carey cemetery by McMinn Funeral home.  Pallbearers will be Les Webb, Tom Arnold, Aubry Howard, Adrian McElroy, James Murphy and Hilton Hunter.  Mildred Williams, Juanita Williams, Norma Lou Gaither, Vera May Arnold, Bettye Arnold and Lois Arnold will be in charge of flowers.  Mr. Gaither is survived by one daughter, Mrs. D. (Sarah A) Gaither, 75, pioneer resident of the Carey community who died Friday, October 27, 1935, were conducted at the Carey Church of Christ yesterday afternoon by Rev. Chisiam of Acme.  burial was in the Carey cemetery by McMinn. Serving as pallbearers at the funeral were Virgil Weatherley, Wayland Weatherred, James Murphy, Thomas Arnold, Hylton Buster, Seayd Meyers, Reuben Arnold and Elmer Ingram. Flower bearers were Margarette Gaither, Marie Williams, Emma Jean Williams, Nellie Vee Gaither, Vera Mae Arnold and Mildred Ruth Williams. Mrs. Gaither, who came to this county in 1893, is survived by her husband; two sons, John and Eppie and a daughter, Mrs. D. M. Williams. Published October 29, 1935

Childress – Funeral services for Alfred Don Gallagher, 44, were scheduled at 4 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church of Childress with Dr. J. V. Cohorn, pastor, and Rev. Joe S. Allen, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Newberry Funeral Home.  Mr. Gallagher died at 2 a.m. Friday in Springer, N. M. of an apparent heart attack. He was vacationing and en route to the mountains. His wife said she awakened to find her husband dead.  He was born July 9, 1936 in Childress, and was graduated from Childress High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church here.  He married Sherri Sue Thonton June 18, 1960, in Charlie, Texas. He was employed as terminal manager for Childress Dozer Service. Survivors include his wife, Sherri, and four daughters, Laura, Leslie, Lynette, and Ladonna, all of the home, and his mother, Mrs. Florence Gallagher of Childress.  Pallbearers were to be Paul Collins, Jerry Collins, Charles Gulledge, Troy Boykin, Dean Decker, Harold Trent, Jerry Smith and Max Foster. GILLILAND

Childress – Funeral services for Miss Minnio Gilliland, 59, of Childress are scheduled Monday in Quanah with burial to be in Decatur. Miss Gilliland, formerly a religion writer for the Globe-News in Amarillo, was found dead Friday evening after friends at the Fairview Manor Apartments were unable to reach her.  She was seated in front of the television with the set still on and her small Poodle was at her feet. Neighbors had talked with her Thursday night, but noticed she had not been seen Friday, and could not be reached by phone. It is believed she died sometime Thursday night. Miss Gilliland was reared in Quanah, and had lived in Santa Fe, N. M. for a number of years. She was employed by the New Mexico Education Association, and had worked briefly for The Childress Index.  Survivors include her mother, a resident of a Quanah nursing home, her sister, Mrs. Martha Lane, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Sandy Gilliland, both of Quanah, and several nieces and nephews. Childress – Mote Givens. Funeral services are being conducted this afternoon, April 27, 1941, for Mote Givens, 52, a resident of Childress county for a half  century, who died Sunday night in a hospital at Waco.  The services are being conducted at the First Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. Orion W. Carter.  Pallbearers are Fred Mitchell, Guy Cox, Arch Hays, Everett King, Leo Preston, Wilbur Williams, Buford Austin and Weldon Lane. In charge of flowers are Mrs. Ed Warren, Mrs. E. R. Blair Jr., Misses Lawayne Mitchell,  Dorothy Kate Preston,  Helen Smith and Helen Hollingsworth. Childress - Funeral services for Mrs.Helen Louise Griffin, 52, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  Services were conducted by Rev Joe S. Allen, pastor and Rev Edward Riley, pastor of the Bula Baptist Church and burial was in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  She died at 9 a.m. Monday, July 8, 1974, in the Childress General Hospital after a lengthy illness.  Mrs. Griffin was born in Childress County May 10, 1922, attended Childress County Schools and graduated from the Childress High School. She married Etchel E., Griffin February 10, 1946 in Childress. Survivors include her husband of the home, one daughter Karen E. Riley of Bula, two sons, Earl Griffin Jr., of Fort Worth, and Richard Griffin of the home, her father Oran Walraven of Childress and two grand children. Published July 9, 1974

Quanah – Funeral services for Mrs. Cecilia Grace Hall, 51, were held Friday evening at 6 o’clock at the Quanah cemetery. Rev. A. Hope Owen, pastor of the First Baptist church, conducted the services and burial was in charge of the B. H. Smith Undertaking Company. Mrs. Hall died Friday morning at 6 o’clock. June 6, 1936 at her home in North Quanah, after an illness of several days. Published June 7, 1936

Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Belle Hall, 85, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Childress Church of Christ with Pat Abamanto, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Born February 3, 1895, in Indian Territory, she married Edd Hall July 14, 1917 in Midland, Texas. He preceded her in death on August 13, 1965 in Childress.  A member of the Childress Church of Christ, she came to the Garden Valley Community in Childress County from Cottle County in 1927. Survivors include three sons, William E. Hall of Lake Charles, La., Vollis J. Hall of Plainview, Lon W. Hall of Childress; one daughter, Mrs. Ola Frances McKinney of Abilene, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Addie Haynie, 89, of Hemet, Calif., were conducted there Wednesday. A former resident of Childress, Mrs. Haynie, the sister of Mrs. Claude Dudley of Childress, died in a Hemet hospital Monday after a long illness.  Born December 28, 1890, in Childress, she lived here until 1940. Survivors include one son, William Alderson of Amarillo; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Mae Nivens and Mrs. Earlene Cloud, both of San Antonio, and Mrs. Eva Halmark of Hemet; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. KirklandKatie Klapper Hardin passed away September 4, 1940 at her home in Kirkland.  Katie was born January 22, 1885 to Phillip and Mary Smith Klapper in Cullen County, Texas.. Katie married Joseph A. Hardin and their children were Claude, Effie Adkinson, Norma Jean Swafford, Willie, who died in infancy, Cullen Doyle, Louie Elbert, and Tincy Marie Britian. Childress - 90-year Old Man Dies Here. J. T. Harris, 90, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bob Stone, east of Childress Tuesday night, September 13, 1938. The funeral is being conducted this afternoon at the McMinn chapel by Rev J. R., Grant, First Baptist minister. Burial will be in Carey cemetery. Pallbearers will be Floyd Stone, Ray Stone, Joe Stone, Joe Covey, Harve Mills, and Gordon Adams. Surviving Mr. Harris are a son, R. Little Rock, Ark - Karen Trosper Harris, age 64, of Russellville, Ark., died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, following a courageous battle with complications from diabetes. Throughout her illness, she was always a strong and positive person, never allowing others to know of her troubles. She was a daughter of the late William Leonard and Gladys Laverne Havens Trosper, and was born Feb. 22, 1944, in Childress. She was a former employee of the Altus Public Schools in Altus, Okla., and the Red River Credit Union, also in Altus. What she enjoyed most was being around her family.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Harris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stacey and Randy King, and Shelley and Tim Watson, all of Russellville; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Barbara Scott, Gale Wells, and Terry and Jimmy Don Wilson, all of Lubbock; and three grandchildren, Alison King, Stetson Watson and Jared Watson, all of Russellville. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at the Shinn Chapel. Arrangements are by Shinn Funeral Service. Honorary pallbearers will be John King, Donnie Watson, Chris Reynolds, Mike Gilbert and Cody Moore. The family will receive friends following the service in the chapel. Published July 22, 2008

Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Harrison was born in Steubenville, Ohio, and was a retired social worker for the Welfare Department in Childress. She had lived in Alaska for several years. Mrs. Harrison was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Childress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Harrison, in 1997. Childress – Funeral service for Jeff D. Hardin, age 76, was held at 2;30 p.m. Sunday from Newberry Funeral Home Chapel conducted by E. A. Sanders, pastor of the Kirkland Church of Christ. Interment was in the Childress Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lonnie Elkins, L. H. Clifton, Mayland Foard, E. D. Hill, Loy Boen and B. P. Henderson. Mr. Hardin died at 1:05 p.m. ‘Friday, March 13th in the Childress General Hospital. He resided at 1300 Avenue K. Northwest and was a retired farmer. Born April 11, 1893 in McKinney, Mr. Hardin moved to Childress County in 1916 from Quanah, settling near Kirkland and later moving to the Community Center area and farming. He married Vivian Hughes December 25, 1920 in Merit. Mr. Harden was a member of the Church of Christ, American Legion and was a World War I veteran.  Survivors include his wife, Vivian; one son, Jeff Donald Hardin of Amarillo; one daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Llewellyn of San Diego, California; one sister, Mrs. Ona Webb of Fort Worth, and four granddaughters, Deborah, Susan and Mya Llewellen and Deanne Hardin.. Childress – Enoch J. Hassell, Pioneer Resident, Dies Friday. Enoch James Hassell, age 79, died at 1:10 p.m. Friday, September 27, 1963, in the Childress Hospital. He was born January 27, 1884 in Grayson County, Texas and had been a resident of Childress County since 1892. Mr. Hassell and Miss Florence Pieratt were married on December 23, 1907 in Kirkland. He was a farmer and stockman until his retirement about ten years ago. He was a member of the Central Christian church. Survivors include his wife, Florence; one daughter, Mrs. Irby Martindale; two sons, J. D. Hassell and James Hassell Jr, all of Childress; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Lon and Horace Hassell, both of Childress. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Central Christian church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Curtis Keith, and Rev. L. L. Hill, pastor of the First Methodist church.  Interment was in the Childress cemetery, under direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were D. F. Dodge, Joyce Cheatheam, Clinton McGhee, Cletus Terrell, Neil Musgrove, Fay Eatherly, Jimmy Cotton and Willard Williams.. Published September 30, 1963.

Childress – Services for Virginia D. Hassell, 66, were to be held at 4;30 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Chapel with Rev. Harold Hurt, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial is in Childress Cemetery. Mrs. Hassell died Sunday in Childress General Hospital. She was born January 21, 1916 in Childress and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She married Floyd Hassell in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1972. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Ethel Seigler of Childress. Pallbearers for the service will be Clifton Smith, Burrows Buckley, James Hassell, James Bartlet, Weldon Teague and Bill Rothwell. Childress - Funeral services for Joyce Vanette McCollough Havens, 74, are set for 2 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church of Childress with the Rev. Jim McCurley, pastor, officiating. She died Saturday, March 6, 1999.  Interment will be in the Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Born Aug 20, 1924 in the Kirkland community, Mrs. Havens was the daughter of Van and Leora Key McCullough, a pioneer Childress County family. She attended schools in Goodlett, graduating from Kirkland High School in 1941. On Feb 10, 1949, she began employment as a secretary with the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad which later became Burlington Northern. After working in Childress, she was promoted to Childress office manager, later transferring to Overland Park, Kan as a supervisor of records.  Seven months later, she transferred to Fort worth as supervisor of records. She retired Jan 1, 1986 and returned to Childress. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Childress, former member of Le Atelier Club, was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, serving as its president for two years and she had membership in the Burlington Northern Club.,  She and her husband, Don L. Havens were married Jan 15, 1961 in Childress. Survivors include a son, Larry A., Harris, and wife, Karen, of Amarillo, a daughter, Marsha Harris Thomas, and husband, Jerry, of Rockwall, grandchildren Stacey Harris King and husband, Randy, of Russellville, Ark; Shelley Harris Ptak and husband Mike, of Bessie, OK, Charles W. Childress - May Dell Hicks, 78, formerly of Childress, died Thursday,
 May 7, 1998, in Fort Worth. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jon Crosby, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Hicks was born and raised in Childress. She had lived in Madill, Okla., and had moved to Fort Worth in 1994. She was a homemaker. She married Albert Hicks in 1936 at Childress. He died in 1993. Survivors include two sons, Benny Hicks of Panhandle and Durrell Hicks of Dumas; a daughter, Sandra Milton of Fort Worth; a brother, Garland Cannon of Garland; two sisters, Dorothy Rogers of Childress and

Childress – Final rites for Thomas Vernon Hill, retired farmer of the Cee Vee community, were held Tuesday morning, November 20, 1957, in the Cee Vee Methodist church. Mr. Hill, 56, passed away at his home Sunday. He was born in Quanah and lived there until 1936 when he moved to Burbank, California. He moved to Cee Vee in 1945 and farmed there until he retired because of bad health.  Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Jessie Hill of Wichita Falls and Johnny Hill of Amarillo, one sister, Mrs. Lloyd Richardson of Quanah. Childress - PIONEER, DIES  Felin M. Hilliard, 78-year-old pioneer Childress business man and one of the Panhandle’s earliest settlers, died at 4:30 this morning, July 3, 1941, in a hospital at Quanah. He had been critically ill for several days.The Funeral will be conducted at the First Baptist church tomorrow afternoon at 4 o’clock with Rev. George A. Curlee of San Antonio, former pastor here, in charge. Rev Charles Tally, the pastor, will assist.Born April 11, 1863, a native Texan, Hilliard came to the Panhandle in the 80’s when only a few cattlemen, squatters, and buffalo hunters were here. He worked for Col. Charles Goodnight, prominent Panhandle rancher, for some time, then later established a wagon freight service between Childress and Matador.He came to Childress 54 years ago. In 1912 he opened and operated a furniture business until he died.  An active civic worker, he served several terms on the city council, and his business was one of the most progressive in the city. Hilliard was known here for his accuracy in forecasting the weather and he based his forecasts on many years of observing weather conditions in this section. Hilliard is survived by his widow; four sons, F. A. and Robert M. of Fort Worth and Wade and Fred of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Edna McKinney of Childress and Mrs. Leona Grace Walker of Paducah; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers at the funeral will be Calvin Jones, B. G. Harrison, H. W. Thaten, E. C. Pilcher, A. C. Milner, Jim Crisp, Ray Green and E. J. King. In charge of flowers will be Mmes. Childress – Mrs. Clem Holland, age 70, former Childress resident, was held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Childress Cemetery. Elizabeth Lankford Holland died Monday, September 29th in a nursing home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She lived in Childress many years ago with her family. She was brought back to Childress to be buried by her son, Arch Holland, and her daughter, Mrs. Guy Cox.  Mrs. Holland is survived by some sisters and brothers, including Fletcher Lankford of Hollis, Oklahoma. Published October 2, 1969.

Wheeler - W. F. Howard Jr., 75, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis Ellis, pastor of First Baptist Church, Lefors, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home. William Frederick Howard Jr. was born August 5, 1923 in Childress, moved from Quail to Mobeetie in 1968 and to Wheeler in 1987. He graduated from Carey High School and earned a BBA, MBA and an Administrator's Certificate from West Texas State College. He was a teacher and administrator for 37 years in Briscoe, Quail, Lakeview, Lelia Lake and Mobeetie until his retirement in 1987. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Betty Gollihugh in 1956. Survivors include his wife; three sons, William F. "Bill" Howard III of Wheeler, Kelly Howard of Panhandle and Dennis Michael Howard of Amarillo; two brothers, Roy L. Howard of Childress and Travis L. Howard of New Braunfels; and two grandchildren. Childress - Final Rites For Elmer Ingram Held Sunday. Elmer Ingram, who died Saturday morning, May 27, 1939, as many before him have died --- in vain quest of hidden riches, was buried in the Childress cemetery yesterday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted at the Childress Church of Christ by the minister, John R. Reese, assisted by Rev. T. L. Burns of the Calvary Baptist church. Burial was under the direction of the Newberry Funeral home. Scores of friends and relatives attended the final rites. Ingram, a 32-year-old FW&D shop worker, died when he was buried under six feet of sand as he dug for buried treasure in the Red River sand hills 14 miles northwest of Childress. He and Henry Corgill of Carey had gone to the spot where Ingram's homemade diving rod had indicated location of buried treasure. They had dug all-night and Ingram was in an eight foot hole when the bank gave way, burying him in loose sand. His body was recovered two hours later. Published Mar 28, 1939

Childress –Mrs. Lavada Inman, 72, died at 5;50 a.m. Saturday in the Childress General Hospital, after being admitted around midnight.  Death was attributed to an apparent heart attack. Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist church of which she was a member. Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the Childress Cemetery by the Newberry funeral home.  Mrs. Lavada Moore Inman was born August 17, 1903 to Oscar and Jenny Starkey Moore, in Bonham and came to Childress County with her parents in 1908.  She attended Childress schools and married Leo Inman here January 25, 1931. Carey –Frank Johnson Dead.  After a prolonged illness, I. Frank Johnson of Clovis, New Mexico, died at the home of his father, J. J. Johnson near Carey on the fourteenth of this month, February, 1910..  His malady, a ganular affection attacking the throat and neck baffled the skill of the physician to either identify or alleviate, although the most skilled specialists were consulted. Born January 1, 1877, in Izard County, Arkansas, to Jacob Jarman and Nancy Ann Battles Johnson, He had hardly reached the prime of life, was thirty three.  He leaves a wife and two children.  He was a member of the most popular families of our neighborhood and, having lived here a short while before moving to New Mexico, he was known and liked by many of our people.  He was a good and true man and we are joined by the entire community in extending to the bereaved our heart felt sympathy. Published February 15, 1910. He married Quincy Mae Cargill on November 6, 1904 in Sidney. Johnson is survived by his widow, five daughters, Mrs. W. T. Zuber and Mrs. A. L. Robinson of Morton, Mrs. Floyd Evans of Glenrose, Mrs. Jack Jones of San Angelo, two brothers, A. N. of Abernathy and W. T. of Hale Center; two sisters, Mrs. Phillip D. Parrish of Carey and Mrs. J. Childress – The Funeral of Elston B. Johnson, 22, who died in a Lubbock hospital yesterday, is being conducted this afternoon at the Church of Christ, by Elder R. R., Price of Pampa, former minister here. Burial will be in Childress cemetery by John O. McMinn, mortuary. Pallbearers are Lewis Mullins, James Mitchell, John Robinson, Ralph Davis, Louis Brown and Ray Philpott.  Flower bearers are Misses Billie Gene Arnn, Allene Jones and Edrin Weaver, Mmes. JOHNSON

ChildressDr. W. G. Johnson died today. May 17, 1948. He was 72 years old. He was  born at Murray, Ky., March 29, 1876, and graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of Tennessee in 1900. He took a post graduate course at the University of Chicago. Dr. Johnson married Mary Bell Jacobs of Murfreesboro, Tenn,, November 21, 1900.  He practiced medicine at Murray, Ky., from 1900 until 1918 when he moved to Childress. Dr. Johnson was local eye, ear, nose and throat specialist for the Fort worth and Denver RWY for several years and resigned but was reappointed upon the death of Dr. F. A. White a few months ago.  Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. M. M. Rucker of Cookville, Tenn., and Mrs. R. W. Payne of Payne, Tenn.; two sons, W. G. and Dallas, both of Childress; four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter; one brother, Dr. C. H. Johnson of Paris, Tenn./; and one sister, Mrs. P. F. Waterfield of Murray. The body will lie in state at the family residence, 310 Third Street, Northeast until funeral time and the casket will not be opened at the church.

Childress – One of Childress' oldest residents,Mary Elizabeth Jones, 84, died last night, March 12, 1940.  Mrs.”Grandma” Jones died last night at home and the funeral is being conducted this afternoon at the First Baptist church by Rev. Charles T. Talley, the pastor. Born in 1856, she had been a member of the Baptist church for 67 years. Pallbearers are O. H. Smith, W. H. Lee, Calvin Jones, G. W. Ellison, C. E. Richardson and Sid Holland. In charge of flowers are Misses Pauline Cooper, Peggy Hale, Polly Parker and Izora Woods. Survivors are five grandchildren, John Albert Taylor of Galveston, Harley Taylor of San Antonio, Mrs. Wyman Davis of Newlin, Alvin and Cecil Taylor of Memphis. Childress – Services for Ray Jones, 56, of Carbondale, Colo., formerly of Carey, were held today in Colorado.  He died Sunday and was buried in Colorado. Mr. Jones was graduated from Carey High School in 1946. He and his wife, the former Wanda Walker of Dallas, taught school in Colorado. Survivors include his wife; two children, Heather and Christopher of the home; his mother, Mrs. Magie Jones of Fort Worth; one sister, Mrs. A. D. Scott of Fort Worth, and a brother, Jack Jones of Fresno, Calif. Childress relatives include Jewell Jordan, Donna Mills, and Kathryn and Elaine Jones. Published April 9, 1985

Childress - Jewell M. Jordan, 97, died Monday, May 10, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jon Crosby, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Jordan was born in Carthage in 1992 and had lived in Childress since she was 5. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was active in the community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noble; by a son, Clinton Buster Jordan; and by a daughter, Donna Mills. Childress – W. G. Joyce, 73-year-old former Childress county official, died at his home here last night after an illness of several months.  The funeral is being conducted this afternoon at the First Baptist church by the pastor, Rev. Charles T. Tally.  The body will be taken to Fort Worth tomorrow for burial under the direction of the John O. McMinn Funeral home. Pallbearers at the funeral are O. H. Smith, Dr. T. M. Morgan, C. E. Richardson, Homer Rigby, George West and Frank Weddington. In charge of flowers are Mmes J. B. Joyce, W. L. Joyce, Elgar Robertson, Bob Greer, Charlene Buster and Pat Caradine. Joyce formerly taught school in this county and later was employed in various county offices.  He was elected county tax collector in 1930 and served two terms. He had entered the race for Justice of the Peace this year, but withdrew when his health failed.  He is survived by his widow; three sons, J. B. of Houston, W. L. and T. H. of Fort Worth; a daughter, Mrs. H. P. Seller of Houston; and three brothers, J. R. of Snyder, F. J. of Mount Vernon and Lee of fort Worth. Published May 1, 1940

Childress – Services for Allie Theora Key, long time resident of Childress, are pending. She died May 15, 1993 at Tennessee Valley. Allie Theora Davidson Key was the daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Davidson and wife, Lucille Jane Thomas of Tennessee Valley. Mrs. Key was born near Tennessee Valley, Cottle County, Texas on September 20, 1910.  Allie married Vernon Key on November 12, 1931 in Hollis, Oklahoma. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Childress.  Survivors include two daughters, Linda Rothwell of Kirkland, Caulene Mason of Tyler, one son, Ray Key of LaPorte; one sister, Myrtle Cramer of Muleshoe; four grand children and eight great-grandchildren. Childress – Arlie Hunter Key who was 90 years old on March 23, died July 2, 1993. Arlie was born March 23, 1903 at Bullard, Texas to Hiel Armstrong Key and wife, Nora Emmaline Sides Key. Arlie died July 2, 1993 with burial in the Childress Cemetery. He moved with his mother and family to Kirkland in 1916. His father died in 1906. Arlie married Allie Pieratt September 4, 1926 at Childress.  Their married life started on a farm near Community Center. They moved to a farm near Kirkland in 1938 and lived there until his retirement in 1977, at which time they moved to Childress. Arlie joined the Kirkland Baptist church in 1925 and moved his membership to the Childress First Baptist Church in 1977. Survivors include his wife, Allie, two daughters, Mrs. Patsy Bowes and Mrs. Arline Franz; four grandchildren, Lynn McPherson, Ann Bowes, Darla Franz, and Eric Franz. Brack Lafayette Key was born in Bullard, Texas. Brack was one of nine children born to Hiel Armstrong Key and Nora Emmaline Sides. Brack married Minnie Ola Smith in 1913 at Bullard, Texas. He moved to Childress county about 1920.  He had lived most of his life in Kirkland, moving here from Bullard.  He moved to Huntsville about three years ago. He married Minnie Smith in 1914 at Bullard. Mr. Key was a retired carpenter and a deacon and pianist at Kirkland First Baptist church. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Nora Faye Owens of Huntsville, three brothers, Vernon of Kirkland, Arlie of Childress, and Claude of Lubbock; one sister, Mrs. Johnnie Allen of Childress and one granddaughter. La Porte – Services for Connie Key, 18, a student, will be at 2 p.m. today at Clear Lake Presbyterian Church in Clear Lake City. Dr. B. J. Cannon and the Rev. David Reiter officiating. Burial will be at Forest Park East in League City, under direction of Jack Rowe Funeral Home of League City. Miss Key died Sunday in Austin. She was born Nov 24, 1964, in Dallas, and was attending the University of Texas at Austin.  A graduate of La Porte High School, Miss Key was a member of Clear Lake Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Key of La Porte, a sister, Kathaleen Doerr of Houston; and grand parents Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Key of Childress and Ethel Richardson of Austin. He was born on Sept. 2, 1919, in Bullard Texas and moved to Childress County in 1921, On April 17, 1938, he married Euthema Carroll of Paducah. She died in 1980.  He married Hazel Blount Groves on Dec. 19, 1981 in Lubbock. He was a graduate of Kirkland High School in 1937. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and served in World War II, as a waist gunner on a B-17 in Europe. He owned and operated several Texaco service stations in the Lubbock area. He worked for U-Haul Rental Service before retiring in 1985. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church for 45 years. Childress - Former resident Mrs. Naomi Helen Pieratt Key died Monday, September 23, 1991, at a Burleson hospital at the age of 90.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 27, 1991, at the First Baptist Church in Childress with the Rev James McCarley officiating.  Burial will be in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Schooler-Gordon funeral home. Mrs. Key celebrated her 90th birthday with her children, grandchildren, great- grand children and great-great grandchild on Saturday, September 14 at the First United Methodist church at Burleson. Mrs. Key was born on September 12, 1901 in Santa Anna, Texas and moved to Kirkland with her parents, James Franklin Pieratt and wife Martha Vest in 1905. Naomi was one of ten children, Floyd, Emma, Modie, Florence, Russ, Pearl, Glade, Buford, all deceased and only one sister survivor, Jessie who was married to Roy Key, her husband’s brother.  Mrs. Key lived in the Kirkland and Childress area from 1905 until 1990 when she moved to Burleson to the Huguley Retirement Center, to be near her son, Sydney and her daughter, Jo Beth Leonard. She married Jess A. Key, July 20, 1920 at Kirkland. Mr. Key preceded her in death in January 1976.  Mrs. Key was a Baptist and was a long time member of the Kirkland Baptist church, and in recent years, the First Baptist Church in Childress.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Kirkland Home Demonstration Club. She attended Kirkland schools. She is survived by three children, Sydney of Arlington, Jo Beth Leonard of Fort Worth and Jean Parrish of Longmont, Colo, a sister, Jessie Key of Arlington, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and a great great grand daughter who is a namesake, Ashton Naomi Sutter, and other relatives and friends. Kirkland, Feb 4 - Olena Glen Key, born September 5, 1925, three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Key, died Sunday evening, February 3, 1929, at nine o’clock from burns received late Saturday afternoon when the Key home was destroyed by fire.  Funeral services were held Monday at three o’clock, at the residence of J. F. Pieratt, where Mrs. Key, who was seriously burned, is resting.  Rev. R. B. Cooper, pastor of the local Baptist church, conducted the services. Pallbearers were the six brothers of Mr. Key. They are Wesley, Vernon, Roy, Arlie, Brack, and Jess Key.  Burial was in the Kirkland cemetery by J. O. McMinn of Childress.  Mrs. Key, who is a teacher in the Community Center school, was cleaning some clothing, with gasoline, when the explosion occurred, burning her painfully and starting a fire that spread to the adjoining room where the little girl was sleeping. The child was rescued from the burning room by Alga Williamson, who made three attempts before he reached her through the smoke and flames. Mr. Williamson was the first to discover the fire, and hurried to assist in fighting it,  A number of other men tried unsuccessfully to get through the smoke and to the baby. Mr. Key was called from Plainview, where he is employed in the M System store, immediately after the accident, and arrived in Kirkland Saturday evening. Childress – Vernon Key.  Services for longtime Childress County resident Hiel Vernon Key, 83, were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim McCurley, pastor, officiating. Mr. Key died Thursday, June 14, 1990 in Childress. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by Masonic Lodge #695 in Childress Cemetery. Other arrangements were by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors. He was born September 5, 1906 in Bullard, the son of the late Hiel Armstrong Key and Nora Emmaline Sides and moved to Childress County in 1915.  He was a member of First Baptist Church. He and the former Allie Davidson were married November 12, 1931 in Hollis, Okla. Mr. Key farmed south of Kirkland and was manager of the Kirkland Cotton gin for several years as well as manager of the Kirkland and Childress grain elevators. He served on numerous boards including Santa Rosa Telephone board of directors.  Survivors include his wife, Allie of the home; two daughters, Caulene Mason of Tyler and Linda Rothwell of Kirkland; a son, Ray Key of La Porte; a brother, Arlie Key of Greeley, Colo;, four grand-children and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Woodrow Wilson, Edwin Sides, Ken Harris, Stanley Terry, Larry Rothwell, and Sandy Rothwell. Childress Funeral services forEugene Roy Key, 72, pioneer Childress County banker, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist church with Rev. James Price, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial was in Childress Cemetery with ante burial services by the Childress Masonic Lodge 695 an hour prior to the funeral services.  The Lodge also conducted burial rites.  Arrangements were under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mr. Key died at 4;50 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 1977, at his home following a lengthy illness.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Childress and Masonic Lodge 695. He came to Childress in 1916 from Bullard, Texas, and went to work for the First State Bank in Kirkland in 1925 where he remained until the bank moved into Childress in 1939. He continued his employment with the First State Bank until his retirement in 1975, serving as vice-president. He had been active in civic affairs here for several years, serving as treasurer of the Old Settlers Association for many years, a member of the School Board, director of the Chamber of Commerce, district treasurer for the Boy Scoots and treasurer for several fund drives.  Born December 29, 1904, in Bullard, he married Jessie May Pieratt on May 9, 1926 in Kirkland. Survivors include his wife of the home; a son Royce Earl Key of Hurst, four brothers, Arlie and Vernon, all of Childress, Brack of Huntsville and Claude of Lubbock; a sister, Mrs. John Allen of Childress; and four grand children.  Pallbearers were Harold Wright, Glen Stiner, Floyd Green, Buddy Cordell, Desmond Bridges, Aubrey Rogers, A. Broughton. Masonic ante-burial services will be held in Childress Masonic Lodge at 1 p.m.  Mr. Key died at 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, 1990. in the Childress General Hospital, following an apparent stroke he suffered Thursday at his home, seven miles east of Childress.  Born April 3, 1899, in Bullard Texas, he came to Childress County from Bullard in 1916.  He settled in the Kirkland area. He married Miss Naomi Pieratt on July 17, 1920 in Kirkland.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Childress and was active in the church and the community. He was a long time farmer-stockman. He was a member of Childress Masonic Lodge No 695, a member of the Dallas Consistory Scottish Rite, and the Maskat Temple Shrine of Wichita Falls. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Sydney of Arlington; two daughters, Mrs. Jean Parrish of Boulder, Colo. And Mrs. Jo Beth Leonard of Ft. Worth;  five brothers, Claude of Lubbock, Brack of Huntsville, Arlie and Vernon of Kirkland, and Roy of Childress; one sister, Mrs. John Allen of Childress; seven grand-children and four great grandchildren. Childress – Mrs. Nora Emmaline Sides Key, age 90, died, at 6:05 a.m. Monday, June 6, 1963, in the Childress hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born March 22, 1873 in Jasper, Alabama, the daughter of James Bentley and Margaret Ellis Sides. She married Hiel Armstrong Key June 20, 1889 in Walker County, Alabama, and moved with her family to Bullard, Smith County, Texas in 1894. Mrs. Key came with her family of nine children to Childress in 1916 following the death of her husband in Smith County. Mrs. Key was a member of the Kirkland Baptist church. Survivors are six sons, Brack, Jess, Arlie and Vernon of Kirkland, Claude Key of Lubbock, and Roy Key of Childress; two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Roddy and Mrs. John Allen, both of Childress, 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 8 great -great grandchildren. One son, James Wesley, preceded her in death in 1936.  Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday from the First Baptist Church in Kirkland conducted by her grandson, Rev. Robert Owens of Huntsville. Graveside rites were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Bullard cemetery Burial alongside her husband was under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were grandsons. Childress – J. Tillman King, born July 22, 1856, died July 9, 1933. One of the greatest tributes ever paid a resident of Northwest Texas was evidenced by  the great throng of friends and citizens gathered Monday afternoon for the funeral of J. Tillman King, who died suddenly at his home Sunday at noon. The crowd was so large that it filled the fine old ranch home of the deceased, covered the spacious lawn and overflowed into the roadway. In it were represented scores of pioneer families of this section of Texas, who had known him and his wife since the beginnings of Childress, and before. There were many present from adjoining counties.  Mr. King was 77 years old and was one of those pioneers who pushed westward in the eighties of the past century, opening the way for agricultural and industrial progress into the panhandle of Texas. He settled first at old Kirkland in the eastern edge of Childress County, coming from Erath county, Texas in 1886. They started their new home four miles west of Childress in 1891 in the town of Old Childress, or Henry as it was known then. The influence of the King family has been felt on every hand in this section and throughout the state. Mrs. King, who is 71, has been quite ill for several weeks. To Mr. and Mrs. King were born nine children, eight of whom are living, one having died in infancy. These surviving children are John E. King of Dallas; Everett J. King, Joseph T. King Jr, and Henry W. King, all of Childress, and four daughters, Mrs. Elsie Still, Mrs. Matthew Jeter, Mrs. George Robertson and Mrs. Robert Jones, all of Childress. Services at the family residence West of Childress were conducted by the Rev W. C. Hinds, pastor of the First Methodist church. Interment under direction of the John O McMinn Mortuary was in Childress cemetery, where the grave was banked with many beautiful floral offerings. Active pall bearers were; Wallace Jones, Leo Inman, Barley Inman, Mote Givens, Clarence Jones and King Lyster. Honorary pallbearers were: Chas Scott, Cross Randle, J. Childress – Services for former residentMartha Marie Koehl, 54, of Hitchcock were held in Livingston with burial in Livingston cemetery. She died Thursday at Hitchcock. Mrs. Koehl, the former Martha Dial, was born in 1930 n Childress, where she grew up.  She married Gene Koehl in March of 1956 at Seguin, was a housewife and a member of Hitchcock Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Selina Waters of Brazoria; two sons, Ronald of Hitchcock and James of the home; her parents, Mr. and  Mrs. J. V. Childress – Funeral services for Hugh P. Lambert, 73, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Memphis, with Rev. C. H. Murphy, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Lambert, who had been a Hall County resident since 1917, died early Friday in Hall County Hospital. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and was a native of Tarrant County. Survivors include his widow, the former Ethel Mae Vaughn; a son, Porter Lambert of Memphis; six daughters, Mrs. Vona Joyce Young of Gainesville, Mrs. Darline Muncy and Mrs. Hudene Castagnetta, both of Amarillo; Mrs. Myrna Loy Evins of Shreveport, La., Mrs. Barbara Hooser of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Gloria Williams of Coalgate, Okla.; two brothers, Oscar Lambert of Tell and Ivy Lambert of Childress; a sister, Mrs. Grace Gossett of Childress; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild. LAND*

Childress – Death claims area pioneer, James Jerome Land.  Final rites are being conducted this afternoon for J. J. Land, 79 year old pioneer of Northwest Texas and a member of the city council in Childress for the past eight years. Land died at 3 o’clock Monday morning, December 26, 1938, in a Childress hospital after an illness of several weeks. The services are being held at the first Baptist church, with the pastor, Rev. J. R. Grant, in charge.  Burial will be in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral home.  Serving as pallbearers at the funeral are Reid B. Scott, L. G. Rainy, J. M. Preston, E. B. Abington, F. F. Weddington, Claude Dudley, John Pennington and H W. Thaten. Master Masons will be in charge of services at the cemetery and members of the Eastern Star are in charge of the flowers.  Land was born February 16, 1959 and came to this section in 1888, settling first in Hall county, then moving to Childress where he was one of the early automobile dealers.  He retired from business some 12 years ago, but retained considerable property in Childress until his death.  He has served as a member of the city council since 1931. His health has been failing for several years, but he became seriously ill only about a month ago. Survivors include the widow, two daughters, Mrs. J. J. Cathey of Childress and Mrs. Lee Williams of Grand Junction, Colo; a son, W. R. Land of Rhome; three brothers, L. Z. Land of Hedley, C. Land of Memphis, and Dick Land of Avoca, Ark; a sister, Mrs. Lee Meadows of White Deer, and 12 grand-children. Published December 28, 1938,

Childress - Funeral service for Mrs. R. B. (Mary Beulah) Lane, age 83, was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Dr J. E. Sheween arranging, assisted by Dr. W. W. Adcock, minister of the San Jacinto First United Methodist Church in Amarillo, Rev. Joe S. Allen, minister of the First Baptist Church and Rev. R. H. Knight, a retired Methodist minister. She was a member of the San Jacinto First United Methodist Church in Amarillo. Burial was in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mrs. Lane died at 3;20 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, in Bevins Memorial Nursing Home in Amarillo after a lengthy illness.  She was born April 30, 1887 in Bosque County and married Robert B. Lane on December 29, 1907 in Bosque County. Mr. Lane preceded her in death on March 2, 1944. They came to Childress county in 1914 from Grayson county.  They settled with their family in the Valley View community, later moving to the Highpoint community. She had been living in Amarillo this past ten years.  She is survived by one son, Weldon Lane of Childress, one brother, A. H. Turner of Levelland, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Pallbearers were John Rowell, Al Allison, Littleton Havins, Clyde Hackler, John Robinson and Charlie Drake. Childress - Pamela Kay Arnn Lankford, 28, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, in Amarillo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Norman Rushing officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Lankford was born March 27,1971 in Childress, where she graduated from high school in 1989. In 1996, she graduated from West Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science degree in Special Education. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Childress. She married Darwin Lankford on February 10, 1990 at Childress. Childress – Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Lansford, 73, passed away in Odessa recently.  Funeral services were held in Odessa Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Crescent Park Baptist church.  Graveside rites were held here Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Joe Allen, pastor of the local First Baptist church, officiating. Survivors include one son, W. B. Lansford of Odessa; two daughters, Mrs. J. B. Holmes of Quemodo, Texas, and Mrs. Eddy Hundley of El Paso; one sister, Mrs. Lela Josey of Tuscola, Texas; and four brothers, J. E. Bolding of Mansfield, W. B. LAWRENCE*

Childress – Jake Forest Lawrence, whose family was among the first to settle in the Arlie area, died in Collingsworth General Hospital at 12:10 a.m.. Friday, June 16, 1972.  He had been ill about three months. Mr. Lawrence was 69 years old and lived in the Arlie community all his life until he and Mrs. Lawrence moved into Wellington two months ago. Their home is at 1209 East Avenue. A farmer all of his adult life, Mr. Lawrence was a quiet unassuming man who by choice devoted himself to his family, his land, and his community, for which he sought those things that would make life better. He was the son of Levi and Nancy Payne Lawrence, and was born at Arlie, September 15, 1902.  He was married to Miss Della Wyrick, a member of another pioneer Arlie family, on January 3, 1926, at Hollis.  He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were conducted at First United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. James Boswell, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were Pete Nippert, A. V. LAWRENCE

Childress – Walter Lawrence killed in car accident February 10th, 1970. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lawrence were en route to California last Tuesday and were involved in a car accident at 6:15 p.m. They hit a bridge while meeting a truck pulling a mobile home and Mr. Lawrence was killed instantly.  Mrs. Lawrence was critically injured.  She is in a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence came to Childress a year ago. They were members of the Parkview Baptist church and lived at 608 North Main. He was a retired carpenter. Funeral service for Mr. Lawrence, age 79, was held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 13th, in Springtown. Burial was in the Springtown cemetery.  Published February 12, 1970.

 

LINCYCOMB*
Quanah – James Allen “Jim” Lincycomb, 73, died Friday, April 24, 1998.  Services will be at 3 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Clinton Young officiating. Burial will be in Quanah Memorial Park by Price-Jackson Funeral Home.  Mr. Lincycomb was born in Kirkland, . He was a World War II veteran and served in the Coast Guard from 1942 until 1943. After his basic training in Florida, he was stationed in Puerto Rico. Mr. Lincycomb retired as an electrician for West Texas Utilities. He then worked at the Lake Pauline Power Plant. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He married Sarah Ann Schultz in 1954 at Fort Stockton. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill Lincycomb of Garland and Jim Lincycomb of Winters; a daughter, Gina Daugherty of Quanah; five sisters, Izaddia Subia, Clara Quary and Bessie Etheridge, all of Pampa, Helen Pierce of Jay, Okla., and Donnie Ralston of Amarillo; and six grandchildren. Childress – Graveside services for Cora May Lindley, 86, were held at 10 a.m. today in the Childress Cemetery with Rev. Max Beard officiating.  Burial was under the direction of Spicer Funeral Home. Mrs. Lindley died Monday morning, August 4, 1960 in the Hall County Hospital in Memphis.  She was born in Little Rock, Ark. on November 25, 1893.  She married Barnie Gigs Lindley in 1913. He preceded her in death in 1947. Mrs. Lindley resided in Childress for 30 years until 1976 when she moved to Amarillo. Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Cozette Davis of Amarillo, two grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Childress – Walter Lee Loter, age 63, died at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 1966 in the Nesbitt hospital in Canyon following a five week illness. Mr. Loter, who lived in Amarillo, was a former Childress resident and the brother of T. A. Loter and Willie Loter. He was born in Childress county and moved to Amarillo about 15 years ago. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. John Blanchi and Mrs. Cal Williams of Amarillo; two brothers, T. A. and Willie Loter of Childress; three sisters, Mrs. Nora Kinsey of Happy, Mrs. Florence Lesley of Dallas and Mrs. Lillie Anderson of Abilene; and five grandchildren. Funeral service was held Friday at 2 p.m. from Blackburn-Shaw chapel in Amarillo.  Burial was in the Llano cemetery in Amarillo. Published  March 31, 1966. LOVE*

Childress – Mrs. Dora Belle Love, age 76, died at 5;00 a.m. Monday, March 29, 1966, in the local hospital. She was born August 4, 1890 in Sharp county, Arkansas and came to Childress county about 65 years ago.  Mrs. Love was a member of the South Side Baptist church. Survivors are her sons, J. Wesley Brewer of Whittier, California, Woodrow Brewer of Fort Worth and Tommy Brewer of Childress; two daughters, Mrs. Stella Turner of Dallas and Mrs. Pearlie Mae Crain of Childress; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Cagle and Mrs. Artie Mae Arnn of Childress; four brothers, Otho, Edgar, Ernest and Willie Kent of Childress.  Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Newberry Chapel conducted by Jimmy Smith.  Burial was in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Pall  bearers were Charlie and Bill Whitten, DeWitt French, Roy Wygal, Jimmy Pittman and Downey English. MARCHANT*

Childress -   Services forLorena Holliman Marchant, 86, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Childress Church of Christ with Doyle Wells, minister, officiating. He will be assisted by Mike Suiter, minister of Fairview Church of Christ, Childress. Mrs. Marchant died Monday, May 9, 1988 in Childress Nursing Center. She was born August 16, 1901 in Krum, Texas, and moved to Childress County in 1924. She was a retired first grade school teacher having taught in Garden Valley, and Kirkland schools.   Later she moved to Cottle County, where she taught at Swearingen. In 1942 she returned to Kirkland and in 1966 she began teaching in Childress. She was preceded in death by her husband E. Holliman May 12, 1947. She married Joe Marchant in 1970. He preceded her in death in 1974. Survivors include a sister Sydda Rudd of Midland; several nieces and nephews including John and Mary Ann Dodgen of Childress, two great-nieces Mary Kathrine Morton and JoAnn Fewell of Dumas; and a brother-in-law Zeke Marchant of Amarillo. Childress – Local Youth Dies From Gin Accident.Mike Martinez, age 17, died at 1;45 p.m., Wednesday, December 13, 1972, in the Childress General Hospital from injuries he sustained that morning in an accident at the Farmer’s Co-op Gin here. Martinez was working at a fan-like machine when his arm and shoulder were jerked into it. He was immediately rushed to the hospital around 8;15 a.m. He had been employed at the gin for the past two seasons. Born December 23, 1958 in Batesville, he and his family moved here in 1970 from Pearsall.  He was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church, where Rosary services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 14 and funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 15.  Rev Dermott O’Brien will officiate with interment in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Young Martinez is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jose Martinez, Sr.; four brothers, Jose Martinez, Jr. Jesse Martinez, Isreal Martinez and Oscar Martinez; ten sisters, Margarita Martinez, Martha Martinez, Gilda Martinez, Bertha Linda Martinez, Irene Martinez, Aguadalupe Martinez, Norma Martinez, all of Childress and Mrs. Juanita Fernandez of Pearsall. Mrs. Maria Esquivel of Vega and Mrs. Eloisa Reyes of Childress. Published December 14, 1972

 

MASHBURN*

Childress – Graveside service for Ira Virgil “Pete” Mashburn was held at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Childress cemetery, conducted by Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor of the First Baptist church. Mr. Mashburn died Wednesday, March 16th in the Childress hospital where he was rushed  unconscious Monday morning after being found by employees at his home. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday from the Central Christian church conducted by Rev. R. C. Brown of Paducah, The graveside services were delayed until his son, Charles Mashburn, arrived home. He was stationed aboard the USS Boxer which was scheduled as the recovery ship for the Gemini missile crew and arrived home on Saturday. Amarillo – Services for Margie Lou Sides McClain, 74, were held at 4 p, m. today in Parkview Baptist Cemetery with Don McFarland, pastor, officiating. Mrs. McClain died Sunday in St.Anthony’s Hospital at Amarillo. Burial was in the Kirkland Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors.  Margie was born July 7, 1913 in Bullard  to Henry Grover and Mittie Bass Sides and was a long-time resident of Childress County. She was a grocery checker and a member of Parkview Baptist Church. Suvivors include three sons, Jerry McClain and Jimmy McClain, both of Kirkland and Joe McClain of  Lubbock; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Pallbearers for the service wee R. Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. May Belle Barley McClure, a resident of Childress county for fifty-six years, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Newberry Funeral Chapel by Rev. Bradley of the local Bible Baptist church and Rev R. H. Knight of the Becton, Texas, Methodist church. Mrs. McClure, 82, passed away at 12;15 p.m. Thursday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Sanders, in Wichita Falls. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McClure came to Childress from Crowell. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1950. Survivors include one son, Cecil, of Wichita Falls; five daughters, Mrs. Dora Sanders of Wichita Falls, Mrs. Opal White, of Bowie, Mrs. Lillie Fetner of San Francisco, Mrs. Mary Spain of Brownwood and Mrs. Elba Weir of Tell; one brother, Sam Barley of Wichita Falls; twenty one grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Pallbearers were D. O. Nash, Claude Dodson, Bud Smith and Obert McFarland. Interment was in the Tell cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral Home. Published December 25, 1958

 

McCOY*

Childress – Edward Eugene McCoy, age 80, died at 8;45 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in a local rest home following a lengthy illness. He was born May 10, 1881, in Ellis County, Texas. He moved to Northfield in 1901 from Ellis county. He married Miss Annie Degrafton in 1905 and moved to Plainview in 1943 where they lived for three years, moving to Childress in 1946. He was a member of the First Baptist church and Childress Masonic Lodge.  Survivors are his wife, Annie; two sons, Macey McCoy of Burnett and Arlie McCoy of Japan; one daughter, Mrs. Tommy Perkins of Plainview; and three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Joe Allen, pastor, and burial was made in the Northfield cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Sam Moore, Delmont Hays, Grady Newell Weldon Timmons and Tom Moore. Published April 26, 1969

Childress -:Accident Fatal To Carey Youth: Hestus S. McIlroy, 16-year-old Carey High School senior, was fatally injured late yesterday, August 5, 1941,  when a tractor he was driving on a country road six miles south of Estelline overturned and crushed his chest and back.  He died in a hospital here about midnight last night, as a result of a back injury and a collapsed lung.  Funeral services for the youth are being conducted this afternoon at Carey. Young McIlroy lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kirby McIlroy, about three miles west of Carey. He had been working south of Estelline and was en route home when the accident occurred.  The cause was not determined.  He was brought to Childress in an ambulance shortly after the accident. Childress – Service Held For Mrs. Edna McKinney.  A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Childress cemetery for Mrs. Edna Lucille McKinney.  Mrs. McKinney was born December 1, 1897 and died in a rest home in Fort Worth Friday, June 7. She was a former resident of Childress. She is survived by one son, Robert McKinney of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Travis Walker of Fort Worth; one brother, Fred Hillard of Lake Dallas and one grandchild. Newberry Funeral Home assisted with the funeral. Published June 13, 1963.

Childress – Aldine Polston McLain, 85, died Wednesday, December 30, 1992, in a Childress hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Tommy Sims officiating. Burial will be in Childress cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Mrs. McLain was born September 7, 1907, in Dallas. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her husband, J. W. McLain died in 1973. Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy and Lois Conway, both of Childress, Betty Wilhite of Wichita Falls and Christine Henson of Paris, Texas; two sons, Jerry of Irving, Texas, and Bobby of Douglas, Georgia; a sister, Irene Hunter of Sherman, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Childress - Services for Dorothy Evelyn McLain, 72, owner-operator of Dock's Western Wear and 1990 Childress business Woman of the Year, are set for 11 a. m. Wednesday at Johnson funeral Home chapel with Johnny Henson officiating. Miss McLain died Saturday, June 5, 1999..  Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Born Sept 9, 1926 in Childress, to James William and Aldine Preston McLain, she began learning the shoe repair business at the age of 17 from Dock Blankenship. She eventually bought the business and expanded it to what became known as Dock's Western Wear, with related merchandise. She was a strong supporter of this community's worthwhile projects, often donating boots and assorted merchandise to numerous children's homes. Survivors include three sisters, Lois Conway of Childress; Betty Wilhite of Wichita Falls; Christine Henson and husband, Robert, of Paris; two brothers, Bobby G. Childress - Funeral services for Jessie William McLain, 74-year-old retired car-man for the Fort Worth and Denver, will be held in the Newberry Funeral Chapel. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor of the First Baptist Church and burial will in the Childress Cemetery. Pallbearers will be E. A. Beaver, Gus McDaniel, Earl Tosh, Luke Sims, Bill Henson and Joe King. Mr. McLain died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, July 7, 1973 at his home, 710 D, NE after an illness of several weeks. He was born January 24, 1899, in Marshall, Texas, and moved to Childress in 1942 from Van Alstyne, Texas. In 1924 he married Miss Aldine Polson, September 18, 1924, in Childress. Survivors include his wife of the home, four daughters, Miss Dorothy McLain of Childress, Mrs. Betty Wilhite of Wichita Falls, Mrs. Lois Conway, of Childress, and Mrs. Christine Henson of Duncan, Okla.: two sons, Jerry McLain of Irving and Bobby McLain of Dallas; one brother, Sam McLain of Irving; five sisters, Mrs. Millie Wheeler and Mrs. Julia Russell, both of Günter, Mrs. Dess Parrish of Van Alystyne, Mrs. Winnie Jones of Sherman, Mrs. Ellavine Moore of California and 10 grandchildren. Childress - Funeral services for Guston (Gus) Erving McDaniel, 72, were held at 10 a.m. Monday in the King Memorial United Methodist church with Rev Joe Walker, pastor, and Rev. Tom Pierce, pastor of the Kirkland Baptist church, officiating.  Burial was in Kirkland Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Directors.  Mr. Mc Daniel died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 1978, in Childress General Hospital following a brief illness.  Born June 17, 1905 in Tarrant County, he came to Childress County in 1906 from Arlington. He moved back to Arlington but returned to Childress County in 1926. He was a school bus driver and was employed several years at Newberry Funeral Home.  He married Opal Terrell Dec 19, 1931 in Hollis, Okla. She preceded him in death Feb 11, 1978. Survivors included one daughter, Mrs. Nancy McClain of Irving, one brother, Fred McDaniel of Killeen; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Storm of Kirkland and Mrs. Bertha Storm of Canon City, Colo., and two grandchildren. Kirkland, -  J. G. McDaniel, 49, died at nine o'clock Monday evening, January 13, 1930 at his home in Kirkland, after a prolonged illness of 176 days.    He is survived by his widow,  four children, Guston, Fred, Mrs. Ruby Storm, and Mrs. Bertha Storm of Millsap; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. McDaniel of Arlington; a sister, Mrs. Charlie Masey of Arlington; and three brothers, G. R. McDaniel of Ryan Okla, H. D. McDaniel of Arlington and Walter McDaniel of Kremling, Colo. All except Walter are present for the funeral services, which will be held at the Kirkland Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 by the pastor, F. T. Johnson. Active pall bearers will be: Lark Collins, W. O. Cobb, Charlie Cssstevens, J. M. Powell, Nath White Jr, and A. B. Clement. Honorary pall bearers will be; J. A. Furr, A. L. Harp, W. J. Galbraith, Earl Holliman, J. F. Pieratt and J. W. Sharp. Burial will be made at Kirkland by John O. McMinn. Mr. McDaniel was born February 9, 1880, in Houston, Georgia. Childress - Mrs. Sammie McDaniel Buried Saturday. Funeral Services for Mrs. Sammie Francis McCollough McDaniel, who died at her home here Saturday afternoon, October 23, 1948 , were held at the First Methodist Church at Kirkland yesterday.  Rev. M. G. Brotherton of Matador officiated, assisted by Rev. Carl Hudson and Rev. Denham at Kirkland. Burial was in Kirkland Cemetery under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home of Quanah. Mrs. McDaniel was born March 27, 1887 in Befont, Alabama. She married James McDaniel on September 11, 1904. Mrs. McDaniel is survived by two sons, Gus of Kirkland, and Fred of Duncan, OK. and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers were Ray Crews, Murray Cartlidge, W. P. Close, J. H. Childress - Homer Tracy McMinn, 84, died Sunday, March 22, 1998.  Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Childress Church of Christ with Bill Mayes of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Mr. McMinn was born in Childress County on September 29, 1913 and was a lifetime Childress resident. He had the John Deere dealership for 20 years. In 1980, he retired from Childress Tractor Co. He was  also was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He married Mattie Ruth Stepp in 1935 at Quanah. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, June Bailey of Amarillo; a son, Jan McMinn of Houston; four grand-children; and six great-grandchildren. Childress – Curtis A. Meece, age 57, died at 2;30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 1963 in a Fort Worth hospital. He had been in ill health for some time. He was reared in the Kirkland community.  He is survived by his wife, Ocie, of Borger; two sons, Dale and Jim Meece, both of Odessa; eight sisters, Mrs. Joe Hardin of Childress, Mrs. Tom Burns of Shamrock, Mrs. D. W. Vaughn of Unice, New Mexico, Mrs. Leo Howard of Odessa, Mrs. Don Laughlin of Groves Texas, Mrs. Don Westall of Pala Alto, California, Mrs. Robert Hall of Valy City, California and Mrs. R. W. Stephens of Bakersfield, California; two brothers, Otis E. Meece of Edgewater, Florida and Lawrence Meece of Port Arthur, Texas; and his step-mother, Mrs. Joe Meece of Fort Worth. His parents were Elder Joe  and Laura Elmira Kennedy Meece. MICHIE*

Childress – Dr J.  D. Michie. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Methodist church this afternoon, July 15, 1940, at 5 o'clock for Dr. Joseph David Michie, 68, a practicing physician in Childress for 33 years. Dr Michie died suddenly early yesterday morning. His body was found in bed by members of his household. The bed lamp was on and a newspaper was across his lap. He had been dead only a short time and heart disease was believed to have been the cause. Dr., Michie was a native Texan. He was born in Kaufman county and received his medical education in the old Baylor Medical college in Fort Worth, graduating in 1898. He came to Childress in 1907 and was engaged in active practice here until his death. His health had been failing slightly in recent years, but he continued his practice.  Dr. Michie was a member of the Tri-County Medical association from its organization and served one term as president.  He was also a member of the Panhandle Medical association.  He  owned farming and business interests in this county and for many years was part owner of the Atkinson Blair Drug store.  The body will be taken to the church at 4 o’clock this afternoon, where it will remain until the funeral. Rev. G. H. Farmer, pastor of the Central Christian church, will conduct the funeral, assisted by Rev. Orion W. Carter of the First Methodist church and Rev. Frank Travis of the Presbyterian church. Burial will be in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the New berry Funeral home. Pall bearers will be Paul Rogers, J. H. Thorne, Fletcher Carter, George Barry, McHenry Crawford and Whitt Johnson. flower bearers will be Miss Helen Hollingsworth, Miss Elizabeth Huggins, Mrs. Edwin Givens, Miss Lettie Johnston, Miss Lonene Hassell, Miss Billie Barry, Miss Ann Hankins. Doctors from Wellington, Memphis, Quanah, Wichita Falls, Turkey, Estelline and Childress will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Dr. Michie is survived by his son, J. D. MILLER*

Childress – Final rites were conducted Thursday forFrank Miller, 40-year-old Childress county farmer who was killed Monday afternoon when he was struck by a bolt of lightning during a brief thundershower near Tell. The funeral was at the McMinn chapel, conducted by John G. Reese, minister of the Church of Christ, and burial was in the Childress cemetery. Pallbearers were O. T. Rothwell, Arthur Rothwell, J. D. Murray, Lou Hamner, Willard Mullins and Cecil Gardner. Miller is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Julian Larned of Watertown, N. Y, and Lela Miller of Childress; three sisters and a brother.  He was killed instantly when the bolt hit him while he and three other men were chopping cotton of the O. T. Rothwell farm near Tell. Published July 29, 1943.

Childress – Funeral services forLuther Miller, 82, of Dumas, a former Childress resident, are pending with Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors of Amarillo with burial in Llano cemetery.  Mr. Miller died Wednesday. Born January 9, 1896 in Mesquite, he resided in Childress from 1948 until 1977, when he moved to Dumas.  A retired farmer, he married Annie Williams in 1916 in Bowie.  Survivors include his widow, Annie; two daughters, Mrs. Omega Wagaman of Amarillo and Mrs. Robbie DeShazo of Dumas; two sisters, Mrs. Muriel Plumlee of Mangum, Okla., and Mrs. Esta Austin of Ringling, Okla; four grandsons and four great grandchildren. Childress – Final rites for Max Albert Miller were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Newberry Chapel conducted by Rev. Burgin Watkins, pastor of the First Methodist church. Mr. Miller, a lifetime resident of Childress, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the local hospital.  His home address was  811 5th Street, Northeast. He was born June 28, 1879 in Radeburg, Saxony, Germany and came to the United States as a small boy. He was a retired leather man, and had worked for Norris Implement and Paul Pierce Saddle Shop. Mr. Miller was a member of the First Methodist church. Survivors are one daughter Miss Fredia Miller of Childress, one sister, Mrs. W. F. Vilger of Abilene; two nephews, George Miller of Dallas and Charlie Miller of Grand Prairie. Pallbearers were Andy Calvin of Crowell, Henry Ashford of Memphis, Josh Ripley of Estelline, Grady Manuel, Gene Nelson and Richard Bird. Interment was in the Crowell cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral home. Childress – Services for J. H. “Curley” Mitchell, 84, of Wichita Falls will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Owens and Brumley Funeral Chapel in Burkburnett with Rev. Lamoin Champ officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. in Childress cemetery. Mr. Mitchell died Friday, September 29, 1990 in Wichita Falls. James Henry “Curley” Mitchell was born March 19, 1906.  He was a retired independent trucker and car salesman. He and Gertrude Jeter were married August 3, 1985 in Childress. Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, James H. Mitchell Jr; three sisters, Mary Seyffert of Fort worth, Carrie Robbins and Martha Roberts of Waco; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Childress – Mrs. Lillie Loona (Halford) Moran, 72, died in the Childress county hospital at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday. She was born February 18, 1895 in Hamilton county, Texas and had lived in Childress county for 62 years. Mrs. Moran was a member of the First Baptist church.  She is survived by her husband, Fred W. Moran of Childress; three sons, Willie of Tell, Earl and Donald of Lomita, California; two daughters, Mrs. Opal Jones of  Lomita and Mrs. Oreta Dyer of Des Moines, Iowa; three brothers, Jim Halford of Tatum, New Mexico, Larson Halford of Estelline, and Buster Halford of Childress;  and one sister, Mrs. Ella Fitzgerald of Childress; 22 grandchildren and 44 great grand children. Funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Joe Allen.  Burial will be in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Published  October 26, 1967

Childress – Private Funeral Is Conducted ForDr. T. M. Morgan.  Funeral services were conducted here this afternoon for Dr. T. M. Morgan, 68, pioneer Childress physician and surgeon, who died yesterday morning. The rites were conducted at the family residence by Rev. Orion W. Carter, pastor of the First Methodist church.  Pallbearers were Jesse Coleman, Harold Wright, Paul Carter, Jess Maddox, Felton King and Kermit Waters.  In charge of flowers were Mmes. Henry King, Henry Givens, Ed Warren, Will Chandler, Tom Roberson and Miss Ola Richards. Burial was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral home. Dr. Morgan had practiced medicine in Childress for 35 years and during much of the time operated a hospital. He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Anna Morgan of Childress and Mrs. Billie Parker of Lubbock; a son, Hayden Morgan of Lubbock; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Cox of Lubbock and Mrs. W. T,. Childress – Funeral services pending for Ivan Lowe Moseley, 66, a former Tell resident, now of Lamarque, Texas, who died there Friday after a lengthy illness. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moseley, he was a graduate of Tell High School. Survivors include his wife, Irene; one daughter, Mrs. Charlene Looper of Florida; two grand-daughters and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Guy Moseley of Tell, Herman Moseley of Wellington, and Alvis Moseley of Tomball, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Burchett of Childress and Evelyn Curtis of Levelland.  Published August 31, 1980

Childress – Mrs. Anna May Mudge, age 88, died at 8;20 p.m. Wednesday, December 30 at Turners Nursing Home. She had been a patient there for two and a half years having moved here from Long Beach, California.  She was born November 2, 1881 in Indian Territory. She was a member of a Methodist Church in Long Beach, California. Funeral service will be held in Newberry Funeral Chapel Friday morning, January 1, at 10 a.m. with Dr. J E. Shewbert officiating. Burial will be in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bessy Revis of Mooreland, Oklahoma; two nieces, Mrs. H. . Childress – Funeral services for Lewis Thurman Mullins, 66, Childress County Commissioner, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Childress Church of Christ with Pat Abananto, minister, and Robin Crawford, assistant minister, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mr. Mullins died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 1980, at his home, 900 Ave G NW.  Born December 13, 1913, in Loco, Oklahoma, he had farmed, operated a restaurant and operated a grocery store. He was elected County Commissioner in 1978 and was serving at the time of his death. Mr. Mullins attended Childress schools and was a member of Childress Church of Christ.  On March 29, 1951, he married the former Gene Pitts in Amarillo. Survivors include his widow of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Vickie Cook of Tell, Mrs. Lewene Bassberg, of Lyford, Texas, Mrs. Diane Howard of Arcadia, Texas, and Mrs. Gail Perkins of Amarillo; two sons, Randy Mullins of Amarillo and Rodney Mullins of Houston; his father, J. Childress - Memorial Service For Cpl. Jack Murphy Set. Memorial services will be conducted Sunday for Marine Corps Cpl. Jack B. Murphy, who was killed on Okinawa, April 26, 1945. Childress – Services for former Kirkland resident, Leonard Myers, 81, of Perryton, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Schooler-Gordon Chapel with Jack Tutor, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Burial was in Kirkland cemetery. Mr. Myers died Thursday in Ochiltree General Hospital. He was born December 13, 1901 in McKinney and was raised in Kirkland. He married Bessie Thomas November 22, 1922. She preceded him in death in March 1968.  Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Erker of Perryton; a brother, A. L. Myers of Kirkland; two sisters, Ruth Sides of Kirkland and Mrs. Velma Collins of Memphis; four grandchildren and four great-grand children.  Published February 6, 1983..

Childress - Ima Lee Nance, 83, of Rowlett and a former Childress resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Kerry Wood, minister of music, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home.  Mrs. Nance was born and raised in Childress. She was a secretary in the County Extension Office. The chamber of commerce named her as Employee of the Year. She moved to Rowlett earlier this year. She married Buck Nance in 1937 at Childress. He died in 1990. Survivors include a son, Randy Nance of Garland; a brother, Buren Arnn of Fort Worth; and a granddaughter. Published November 6, 1998

Childress – Dean Newell of Dallas, former resident of Childress and father of Mrs. Mark (Doris Newell) Graham of Childress, died Thursday,  March 9, 1944 in Dallas. He is survived by his wife, one son, Lester, who is in the army and two daughters, Mrs. Graham and Miss Mary Kate Newell of Dallas.. The funeral was held at 2;30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Dallas. Childress – Services for former Childress resident,Bertha Ohr, 74, of Abilene were held July 19 in Elliott=Hamil Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Diebel of the First Christian Church in Abilene officiating. Graveside services were held later that day at the Truscott Cemetery in Knox County. Mrs. Ohr died July 16 in Hendrick Medical Center at Abilene. She was born June 13, 1909 in Childress. She married Clifford Ohr November 7, 1929 in Hollis, Okla. Mrs. Ohr had been a resident of Abilene since 1958. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Martha Haynie of Graham; a son, Clifford Jr. of Houston’ a sister, Zilpha Scott of Fort Worth; four brothers, Roy Greer of El Paso, Joe, Homer and James Greer, all of Chlldress; and three grandchildren.  The family requests that memorials be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Published August 7, 1983.

Childress – Mrs. Orval (Mabel Maroney) Owen, a woman whose devotion to her profession as a nurse in Childress, died in Childress General Hospital at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1970, from an apparent heart attack she suffered shortly before getting off duty at 11 p.m. In her personal life, her love for people was one part of her desire to make life more lasting, as she nursed and cared for the sick in the hospital. She had worked in the Childress hospitals longer than any other person and was one of the first women to receive an L. V. N. degree. She began her career by working in the old Jeter-Townsend Hospital and had worked as a nurse for over 25 years.  Mrs. Owen, age 58, was born June 16, 1912 in Lamar County, Texas. She came to Childress county as a child. On April 16, 1933, Mabel Maroney married Orval Owen at Tell, Texas. They lived in Carey before moving to Childress where they were presently making their home at 1607 Avenue E. Nw. Mrs. Owen led a very active life in that she was a member of the Carey Baptist Church, secretary of the Licensed Vocational Nurses Association. Chaplain of the V. F. W. Auxiliary and vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Orval; two daughters, Mrs. Juanita Arrington of Jacksonville and Mrs. Joy Hawley of Post; one brother, Leroy Maroney of Yukon Oklahoma; three sisters, Mrs. Virgie Owen of Dimmitt, Mrs. Katherine Ioof of Amarillo and Mrs. Effie Owen of Childress; two grandchildren and many, many friends. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) in the First Baptist Church of Childress with officiant being Rev. Virgil Barnett, minister of the Carey Baptist, assisted by Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor of the Childress First Baptist church.. Burial was in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were Charlie Moore, Cloyce Holeman, Abra Howard, Leo Smith, Frank Mitchell and Howard Grimes.  Published April 22, 1971

Boulder, CO - Arthur Leo Parrish, 65, who died Friday evening, April 18, 1969, at his ranch near Longmont, was the former owner and operator of the Rocky Mountain Motel in Boulder. Mr. Parrish was born in Sidney, Arkansas, on October 18, 1903 to Phillip Daniel and Mary Ann Johnson Parrish, long time residents of Carey, Childress County, Texas. Mr. Parrish, who came to Boulder in 1949 from Childress, Texas, is survived by his wife, Tressie Laverne Williams Parrish, four sons, Vaughn, and Jesse of Boulder, Clarence of Perryton, Texas, and Lonnie of Lyons; and one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Mary Ann) Alverson, of Berthoud.  In addition he is survived by 16 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one brother, Carl Parrish of Carey Texas. Mr. Parrish was a member of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and the Standard Quarter Horse Breeders Association. He was an avid sportsman and fisherman and a member of Broadway Baptist church of  Boulder. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, with Rev Bill Fowler of Broadway Baptist church officiating at Broadway Baptist, and interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Park. Carey - Funeral services for Phillip Daniel Parrish will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church of Carey. Rev Jim Muse, pastor, will officiate at the services. Mr. Parrish, 80, died at his home near Carey at 1;45 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 1955.  He was born on August 16, 1874 in Sharp county, Arkansas to John Fuller Parrish and his wife, Rowena Ellen Yeager. Carey - Mrs. P. D. (Mary Ann Johnson) Parrish dies Saturday,  Death came Saturday afternoon, August 16, 1949, to one of Childress County’s pioneer mothers who moved to Carey 25 years ago from Arkansas. Mrs. Parrish, 78, died of a heart attack at her Carey home Saturday afternoon and funeral services were conducted in the Childress First Baptist church Monday afternoon.  Rev. W. H. Colson, pastor of the Childress church and Rev Wayne R. Williams, pastor to the Carey church, officiated at the services. Mary Ann was born to Jacob Jarman and Nancy Ann Battles Johnson in Izard County, Arkansas on March 30, 1871..Mrs. Parrish was a member of the Carey Baptist church. Surviving Mrs. Parrish are her husband, two sons, Carl Parrish of Carey, and Leo Parrish of Boulder, Colorado, a sister Mrs. J. W. Arnn, Denver, Colorado: two brothers, A. N. Johnson, Abernathy, and W T. Johnson, Hale Center; ten grand-children and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by a foster sister, Mrs. F. J. Springer, Kress. Grandsons of the late Mrs. Parrish were her pallbearers and included W. D. Parrish, R. C Parrish, Clarence Parrish, Jessie Parish, Hershel Parrish, Lonnie Parrish and O. C. Childress June 6, 1948 – Remains of Mrs. Marshall Patterson, 34, who died at 4:10 yesterday morning, will be shipped to Columbia, Miss. for burial by a funeral home there. Childress - Funeral arrangements for William Robert Pelley of Borger are pending with Newberry Funeral Home.  Mr. Pelley, who was a retired Phillips Petroleum Company employee, died January 3rd at 2:30 p.m. in Borger. Born November 20, 1901 in Gunter, Mr. Pelley had resided in Borger for the past 28 years. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Pelley, of the home; one son, Richard Michael Pelley of Midland; and one daughter, Mrs. Marie Ballis of Dallas. Childress – Services for Alvis T. “Abb” Petty, 77, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. J. V. Cohorn Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial was in Childress Cemetery by Schooler- Gordon Funeral Directors. Mr. Petty died Thursday in Childress Nursing Center. He was born February 8, 1906 in Lamar County and had been a resident of Childress since 1933.  Mr Petty was employed as a truck driver before retiring. He married the former Nona Dodd November 10, 1925 in Broadway. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jack Petty of Childress, A. D. “Bud” Petty of Albuquerque, N. M. and Terry Petty of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Jenny Taylor of Quanah; a sister, Susie Nance of Paris; 13 grand children and two great grandchildren. Childress – Mrs. T. F. Phillips of Carey died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mack Junkin in Sweetwater.  She was in Sweetwater visiting her daughter and became ill of pneumonia only a few days ago. The body will be returned to Carey for burial, but funeral arrangements were incomplete today. Mrs. Phillips is survived by five sons, Raymond of Seminole, Okla., John D. of San Angelo, Oscar of Vidor, Travis of Odessa and Walter of Carey; and three daughters, Mrs. Junkin, Mrs. Mildred Patillo and Mrs. Nora Bel Day, both of Carey. Childress – J. F. Pieratt, Retired Farmer, Dies At Home. James Franklin Pieratt, aged 88, retired farmer and a resident of Childress County since 1905, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. J. Hassell, yesterday after an illness of about five weeks.  Pieratt was born June 15, 1860 in Morgan County, Ky, and settled near Kirkland after coming to the county from Coleman County, Texas. He began farming, and retired in 1924. He is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. W. P. Close of Kirkland; Mrs. Jess Key, Mrs Hassell, Mrs. Roy Key, Mrs. Ernest Adams, and Mrs. Emma Caradine, all of childress two sons, Russ Pieratt of Childress and Buford Pieratt of Amarillo; 28 grandchildren and 13 great grand-children.

Services are to be conducted at the Kirkland Methodist Church at 3 this afternoon.  Rev. Marvin Brotherton of Matador, assisted by Rev. Carl Hudson, pastor, will officiate. Pallbearers, all grandsons, will be Sydney Key, Garth Close, Arthur Caradine, J. D. Childress – Floyd Pieratt Funeral Rites are Conducted.  Funeral services were conducted  Saturday afternoon for Henry Floyd Pieratt, 90, prominent resident of Kirkland, who died Friday afternoon. The services were conducted at the Kirkland Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. F. R. Pickens, assisted by Rev, G. H. Farmer of the Central Christian church in Childress and Rev. Clifford Harris of the Kirkland Baptist church.  Burial was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry funeral home. Pallbearers were nephews of Pieratt, Arthur Caradine, Pink Close Jr, J. D. Hassell, E. R., B. Childress – Russ Hamilton Pieratt, 79, died at 10 a.m. today, October 21, 1969, in the Childress Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the First United Methodist church of which he was a member and burial will be in the Childress Cemetery by Newberry Funeral Home.  Dr. J. E. Shewbert, pastor, will conduct the services,.  Pallbearers will be O. J. Lyons, J. O. Scott, J. D. Sweeney Jr., Virgil Swain, Dean King, Roy Swain, Arlie Key and Warren Sanders of Amarillo. Mr. Pieratt was a retired boilermaker and inspector at the Fort Worth and Denver Shops. He retired in 1959 after 37 years of service.  He was born February 12, 1890, in Ezel, Morgan County, Kentucky, to James Franklin and Martha Ellen Vest Pieratt, and moved to Childress from Coleman County in 1905. Mr. Pieratt married Zera Mae Jarrell March 17, 1917, in Childress. He was a member of the Crawford Sunday School Class and the Burlington Club.  Survivors include his wife of the home, 904 Avenue G NW; two daughters, Mrs. John Nabers of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Johnny King of Littleton, Colorado; three sisters, Mrs. Enoch Hassell, Mrs. Jess Key and Mrs. Roy Key, all of Childress; one brother, Bueford Pieratt of Amarillo, one grandson, Roger King, of Littleton. Childress – Mrs. Minda Lou (Bohannon) Pierson, age 81, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, August 12 in Knox City. Mrs. Pierson was a longtime resident of the Kirkland community before moving to O’Brien.  She was born February 22, 1886 in Cookeville, Tennessee and came to Childress county as a small child settling in the Kirkland community. She was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors are five sisters, Mrs. Becky Abel of fort Worth, Mrs. Beulah Carter of Tucumcari, New Mexico, Mrs. Emma Thomas and Mrs. Katie Skinner of Kirkland, and Mrs. Lillie Dennington of O’Brien; two brothers, J. W. Bohannon of Dalhart and Joe Lee Bohannon of Kirkland. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Newberry Chapel, conducted by Rev. A. W. Cookerell, pastor of the King Memorial Methodist church. Burial was in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry funeral Home. Pallbearers were nephews, J. L. Childress – Funeral services for Steven Randall Pittman, 33, of Colorado Springs, Colo., will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Newberry Chapel with David McCain, pastor of the Fairview Church of Christ, officiating.  Burial will be in Kirkland Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Mr. Pittman, a native of Childress died Friday in Colorado Springs. PIXLER*

Childress – B. Pixler Funeral Being Conducted Here This Afternoon December 26, 1940.  B. Pixler, one of Northwest Texas' real pioneers, died at his home in Childress last night. He would have been 90 years of age tomorrow. The funeral is being conducted this afternoon at the Church of Christ by Harvey Scott of Abilene, former minister of the church here. Burial will be in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral home. Pixler came to Texas in 1872, and during the late 1870s and early 1880s freighted from Decatur to Old Mobeete, through a sparsely settled territory. When the FW&D railroad was built into this section, he operated his freight business from the terminus of the rails at Wichita Falls, then at Harrold, in the Panhandle territory. He moved to Childress when it was first settled and was in business here for many years. He operated a coal and grain company for a number of years and then operated one of the first "service cars" in Childress. During the early days of Childress, he supplied the city with drinking water each day to residents of the city. He was, more recently, associated with the late Frank Givins in operating a print shop here, but retired a few years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Miss Alba Pixler of Childress; and three grandchildren, Otto Pixler of Houston, Scott Pixler of Shreveport, and Mrs. Nada Pesek of Portland, Ore. Pallbearers at the funeral are W. P. Markham, Don Dennington, Dr. L. W. McClendon, Price Baxley, Roy Villyard, and Frank Carter. In charge of flowers are Mmes. Childress – Graveside services for Leslie A. Polston, 74, of Childress were held at 2 p.m. today at Childress Cemetery with Rev. Bill Wright, officiating.  He was assisted by Rev. R. H. Knight, retired Methodist minister. Burial was by Schooler-Gordon Funeral directors.  Mr. Polston was born July 20, 1909 in Bowling Green, Ky., and had been a resident of Childress for several years. He died Sunday in his residence at 800 Ave. C. NE. Mr. Polston was a retired machinist from Wellington Industries, and a member of a Lions Club in California and the International Brotherhood of Machinists. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home; two sisters, Aldene McClain of Childress and Irene Hunter of Sherman; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Charles Rogers, Kim Martindale, Glen McClain, Les Carrick, Dwain Marple and Toney Jones. Published  March 12, 1985

Childress - Earnest "Doc" Randle, 82, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Randle was born March 25, 1916, in Marshall and married Retha Evans in 1956 at Childress. He worked as a stock person in Gibson's Department Store. Mr. Randle was a mason and a member of St. John Baptist Church and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He attended Marrietta Price School. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Wallace Earl Miller of Phoenix, Earnest Randle Jr. of Lawton, Okla., and Jerry Frank Randle of Childress; two daughters, Sandra Kay Philmore of Amarillo and Jackie Randle of Childress; a brother, Roland Hervey of Tulsa, Okla.; four sisters, Mildred McKnight and Frankie Waters, both of Houston, Inez Blake of California and Ethel Randle of Marshall; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Childress – Final rites for Arthur Hubert Reed were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Church of Christ conducted by E. A. Sanders.  Mr. Ree, age 85, was born March 17, 1878 at Cooper, Texas and died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, June 7th. He was a retired farmer and had lived in Childress since 1928, coming here from Lamar county, Texas. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Floyd Wilson of Grand Junction, Colorado, Mrs. Jim Anderson, Mrs. Howard Clifton and Mrs. Jimmy Mooney all of Childress; three sons, Lee Reed of Norman, Oklahoma, Floyd Reed of Wyoming and Al Reed of Denver, Colorado; one half brother, Lem Wilson of Tyler; 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Pallbearers were grandsons, Grady Clifton, Robert Wilson, Duane Reed, Harold Anderson, Derall Anderson and Robert Anderson. Burial was in the Childress cemetery under direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Childress – WalterLeroy Reeves, 75, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Wood and the Rev. Jim McCurley, both of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Mr. Reeves was born September 28, 1929 in Childress to Newman Walter and Christine P. Brummett Reeves.. In high school, he was an all-state football player and was a letterman at West Texas State Teachers College. He was student body president at West Texas State University. He was an Army veteran and served in Normandy and was in Europe for four years. Mr. Reeves retired as coach for the Childress public schools. He was a former deacon, treasurer and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Childress. He was active in Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Chamber of Commerce and Childress Independent School District. He was the former owner of Fairview Flower Shop. He married Charlene Baird in 1946 at Childress. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mike Reeves of Prosper; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Published February 17, 1999

Rice of Santa Cruz, Calif., were conducted there Saturday. He was the brother of Mrs. Johnnie Williams and Paul Griffin, both of Childress.  Born April 1, 1903. in Childress, he moved from the area in the late 1920s. Published March 4, 1980

 

RILEY*

Culver City, Calif. Glyndon Milburn Riley, 58, a former Amarillo Globe-News sports correspondent, died yesterday, April 6, 1977, while playing tennis.  Services are pending. A graduate of West Texas Sate University, Mr. Riley was a three-time winner of the annual Tri-State Tennis tournament. He won in men’s singles in 1941, 1950 and 1957, and was the first player to ever win the division three times. Early in his career, he was a high school teacher and tennis coach  at Kirkland Texas where he met and married Mary Madeline Williamson, the daughter of a pioneer Childress County family. Mr. Riley was the author of  the book “The History of Hemphill County”. He joined the Federal Aviation Administration in the early 1950s and served as Chairman of the Board of the FAA Federal Credit Union. He retired in January from the Federal Aviation Administration. Survivors include his widow, Madeline, one daughter, Mrs. Melanie Wirth of San Jose, Calif; one son, Cary of Culver City, Calif; one brother Len of Palos Verdes, Calif; and a number of other relatives in the Texas Panhandle region. Childress – Mrs Lillie Jane Key Roddy, 74, died at 11;35 a.m. today, October 13, 1867, in the Childress General Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kirkland Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Joe S., Allen, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Childress, and Rev. H. T. Harris, a retired Baptist minister. Burial will be in the Kirkland Cemetery by Newberry’s and pallbearers will be Clint Crawford, Earl Moran, Wayne Walker, Ray Stone Jr, Thomas Ethridge, Sonny Nichols, Chick Williams and Troy Manuel. Mrs. Roddy was born January 30, 1893 in Jasper, Alabama, and moved to Texas in 1894 with her parents Hiel Armstrong and Nora Emmaline Sides Key, who settled in  Smith County.  She married Walter Roddy October 1, 1916 and they moved to the Kirkland Community.  He died October 13, 1944, and is buried in the Kirkland Cemetery. Mrs. Roddy moved to Childress shortly after her husband’s death. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Wilma Moran of Tell, Mrs. Norene Woodard of Amarillo, two sons, James Roddy of Houston and Key Roddy of Dallas; one sister, Mrs. Leora Allen of Chidress, six brothers, Brack and Roy Key of Childress, Claude Key of Lubbock, Jess, Vernon and Arlie Key all of Kirkland,, 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Childress – Graveside rites for former residentA. J. “Andy” Rogers, 55, were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Childress Cemetery. The Wellington National Guard conducted a military service followed with Masonic Rites lead by Childress Lodge No. 695. Burial was under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Andrew Jacob Rogers died Saturday, September 13, 1980, in Temple following a long illness. Memorial services were held Sunday in Round Rock where he had been living for several years. Born December 24, 1924 in Fort Worth, he grew up on a farm northeast of Childress and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. After graduating from Texas A&M, he returned to Childress and was later elected to two terms in the House of Representatives, then served 14 years as State Senator.  He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge and the Elks. Survivors include his wife Billie of Round Rock; five daughters, Melissa Lindsay of Austin, Mrs. Wayne Allison of Houston, Mrs. Ed Bland of Carthage, Mrs. Bryan Alexander of Austin, Mrs. Gary Molberg of Amarillo; two sons, Jake Rogers of Round Rock and Leslie Lindsay of Austin; and eight grandchildren. Pallbearers were Carroll Seal, Alex Saied, Buddy Wilcoxson, Darrell Burrows, Granger McIlhany and A. Childress – Tinese Rothwell Rites Slated Monday. Funeral services for Tinese Dian Rothwell, 12, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Kirkland Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Pierce, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Miss Rothwell died at 1 a.m. Friday, February 8, 1980, in Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo, after a long illness.  She was born September 22, 1967, in Childress. Survivors include her parents, Sgt. 1st Class and Mrs. Walter Rothwell of Manhattan, Kan; one sister, Tammy, of the home; grandparents, Mr and Mrs. John Rothwell of Childress and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Key of Kirkland.  Pallbearers will be Jerry McClain, Ken Harris, Danny Murphy and Larry Grillet. Childress – Mrs. S. P. Runnels (Lula Hortense Clark), age 56, died Sunday at 5;15 p,m. in the Childress hospital. She was born September 26, 1910 in Louisiana. Mrs. Runnels moved to Childress in 1954 from Louisiana and was a cook in a local restaurant.  She was a member of the New Hope Baptist church. Survivors are her husband, S. P.; two daughters, Mary F. Runnels of Childress and Mrs. Eugena Lemell of Dallas; three sons, C. J. Runnels of Childress, S. P. Runnels Jr. of California, and Danny Lee Nelson of Dallas; one brother, J. C. Clark of Childress; and one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Pruitt of Dallas.  Funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Wednesday from the New Hope Baptist church with Rev .S. L. Childress – Mrs. Pearl Gertrude Russell, 70, died at 3;45 a.m. Monday at her home, 311 Avenue E, Northeast. She was born January 8, 1889, in Lee county, Tennessee, and had come to Childress county 50 years ago from Vernon. She was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors are her husband, W. J. Russell; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Price, Mrs. Ray Palmer of Amarillo; one son, Lawrence Russell; one step-son, Ellis Russell of Fort worth; two step-daughters, Mrs. Jay Teague of Amarillo, Mrs. Carl Hudson; two brothers, Hubert Morris of Fresno, Calif., Finis Morris of Vernon, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services wee held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Newbery funeral Chapel with Rev. Rollo Davidson, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Pallbearers were Lawrence Cramer, Roy Hassell, Donald Miller, W. C. Adams, Floyd McMinn and Leon Henley.  Interment was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral Home. Published March 19, 1959.

Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Jimmie Elizabeth Scott, age 89, were held Sunday, December 31st at 2 p.m. in the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marvin James, pastor of the first United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was held in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry’s.  Mrs. Scott died Saturday, December 30th at 5 a.m. in the Childress General Hospital following a long illness.  Mrs. Scott, born January 17, 1883 in Dawson, Alabama, had resided in Childress for the past 64 years, coming here in 1906 from Dawson. She married Charles T. Scott on January 14, 1908. He preceded her in death on April 3, 1963. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  She is survived by four sons, Charles R. of Childress, Robert B. of Charlotte and James A. and John B. both of Amarillo; two daughters, Mrs. W. L. Hightower of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Lonnie Longbine of Wylie; one half brother, Bascom Wright of Dawson, Alabama; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Fred Cariker, Bill King, Claude Johnson, Bob Wilson, Ernest Rea and C. Childress – Guy A. Seigler, Old Timer Buried Here Today. Funeral rites were conducted at 2 p.m. this afternoon in the Newberry chapel for Clay A. Seigler, resident of Childress county since 1900. The 61-year-old man died as a result of a year’s illness at 8:35 p.m. Monday in the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mell Dwight.  Officiating in the service were Rev. W. H. Colson, pastor of the First Baptist church, and Dr. Wilson Cole, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. A farmer and rancher in Northfield for the past 50 years, Seigler was well known and liked by many Childress people.  He was born in Collins county near Farmersville on June 26, 1888 and came to Childress from Floyd county. He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Matador. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Dwight Seigler, and his mother, Mrs. G. W. Seigler of Northfield. One son, Aubrey Seigler, and one daughter-in-law, Virginia Seigler, both of Los Angeles, Calif, also survive. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Amy Vaughn, Lubbock, and Mrs. Lela Etheridge, Northfield, four brothers, Eldridge, of Matador; George, of Dumas, Elbert, of Childress and A. H. of Mexico City, Mexico. The burial was in the Childress cemetery under the arrangement of the Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were Leonard White, C. V. Jones, Frank Buster, Arch Hayes, Joe Lile, Jake Gallagher, Alvis Maddox and John Robinson. On the flower commitee were Mmes Mabel Hobbs, M. A. Tate, Frank Buster, Ira Gallagher and Katherine Sparks. Childress – Mrs. Cora T. Sims, 79, passed away Thursday, November 23, 1957, at the home of her son, A. M. Sims.  She was born on December 3, 1877, in Mississippi and had lived in Childress for the past two years, coming here from Lawton, Okla.  She was a member of the Primitive Baptist church.  Survivors include four sons, A. M. Sims of Childress, Claude Sims of Jean, Texas, Marvin Sims of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and J. J. Sims of Amarillo;  five daughters, Mrs. Turley Miller of Moran, Kansas, Mrs. Henry Jones of Los Vegas, New Mexico, Mrs. Grace Fitts of Orleans, France, and Mrs Glea Kendrick of Stafford, Mo; 42 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Newberry Funeral Chapel by Rev. Childress – Jessie Franklin Sims, age 77, died at 4:40 p.m. Friday, March 20, 1970, in the St. Anthony’s hospital in Amarillo. His home was located at 506 South Main.  Mr. Sims was born May 21, 1892 in Waldron, Arkansas and he married Bessie Brady June 25, 1916 in McAlister, Oklahoma. He was a retired gin and elevator operator. Survivors include his wife, Bessie; six daughters, Mrs. Bessie Davenport of Fort Worth, Mrs. Eva Lincycomb, Mrs. Mittie Lou Chandler, both of Amarillo, Mrs. Georgia Jones of Cee Vee, Mrs. Ada Philpott and Mrs. Maxine Murphy, both of Childress; four sons, Dennis Sims of Hereford, Leslie Sims of Landover, Maryland, Tommy Sims of Dallas, James Sims of Childress; 28 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  Funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday from Newberry Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Childress - Jackie Miller Smith, 61, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Childress Church of Christ with Doyle Wells of Lake Charles, La., Bill Mayes of the church, Charley Johnston, coach of Childress, and Dr. W. D. Green of Childress  officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was born and raised in Childress where he graduated from high school in 1955. From 1956 until 1958, he served as a medic in the  Army. After graduation from Texas Tech University in 1967, he returned to Childress as a teacher and coach.  Mr. Smith's career included being defensive coordinator for Bobcat football, head track coach, golf and basketball coach, history teacher, driver education instructor and Little League coordinator. He  was recognized by Texas High School Coaches Association in 1997 for accomplishments in coaching track, named Employee of the Year in 1979 and Teacher of the Year in 1998.  In 1998, Mr. Smith retired from Childress Independent School District.  He was a member of Childress Church of Christ where he was a deacon and Bible teacher.  He married Charlene Riddell of Cee Vee in 1961. Survivors include his wife; a son, Terry Smith of Tomball; two  daughters, Tammy Stegall of Lake Jackson and Amber Smith of Lubbock;  three sisters, Syd Cosby of Coleman and Judy Johnson and Pat Swindell,  both of Childress; and two grandsons. Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Jerry D. “Colleen” Smith, 45, were conducted at 10 a. m. Saturday in the Assembly of God Church with Rev. James Tynes, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Mrs. Smith died at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 1980, in St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo after a long illness.  Born August 25, 1934, in Childress, she graduated from Childress High School, and on November 25, 1953, married Jerry Smith in Hollis, Okla. She was a member of the Women’s Department Club. Survivors include her husband, Jerry of Childress; two daughters, Mrs. Sherri Holton and Miss Tracy Smith, both of Childress; one son, Jeff Smith of Childress; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Childress – David L. Smith, 76 years old and a resident of Childress County since 1908, died suddenly of a heart attack last night, February 15, 1940, at his home, 1502 G NW.  The funeral is planned for tomorrow morning at the residence, with Rev. B. H. McLeland, Baptist minister, in charge, and Rev. Charles T Tally of First Baptist church assisting. . Burial will be in the Childress cemetery by John O. McMinn Mortuary. Survivors are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Walter Smoot of Childress; two sons, Roy of Santa Rita, N M and Ray of Waco; three sisters, Mrs. S. T. Harrison of  Memphis, Mrs. Edgar Clay of Mangum, Okla., and Mrs. D. C. Maupin of Big Spring; two brothers, J. M. of Rotan and E. M. of Lovington, N. M.; three grandsons and a granddaughter.  Mr. Smith operated and resided on his farm west of town until the past few years. He and Mrs. Smith celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year. Childress – Mrs. Fannie Stephenson, 75, died at 1:40 p.m. in the Childress General Hospital Friday, after a two-year illness.  She had been confined to the hospital for about a month.  Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church in Darrouzett at 3 p, m. today with Rev. R. O. Browder officiating. Pallbearers will be I. M. Roper, Basil Duke, Basil Duke Jr., Bob Duke, C. T. Phillips, J. J. Watson, J. W. McGee and Mel Beck. Mrs. Stephenson was born February 18, 1883, in Montague County, Texas and was a member of the First Methodist Church in Darrouzett where she lived until coming to Childress two years ago. She is survived by one brother, Roy C. Davis of Ottawa, Kansas; three nieces, Mrs. Mike Wilson of Childress, Mrs. Carl Lindholm  of Kingsburg, California and Mrs. E. J. Kirkland – Funeral Rites for Russell O. Storm. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2;30 o’clock at the Kirkland Church of Christ for Russell O. Storm, who was found dead at home Saturday morning, October 19, 1945. Mr. Storm was 71 years old, born April 22, 1874, and had lived in Kirkland 32 years. Elder E. N. McCoy of the Church of Christ conducted the service.  He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. D. Remington of Denver, Colo, and Mrs. J. E. Owen of Borger; five sons, Joe Storm of Colorado Springs, Colo, Lawrence Storm of Guffey, Colo, Preston Storm of Blanca, Colo, and Henry and Albert Storm of Kirkland; 13 grandchildren; one brother and two sisters. One of his daughters, Mrs. A. Allen.  Mrs. Swafford died at 5;05 p.m. Friday, March 20th in the Abilene hospital. Born Della Coleman October 3, 1889 in Denton county, she married W. P. Swafford August 2, 1906 in Hereford. They moved to Hardeman County in 1912 and to Childress in 1915. Mr. Swafford died here in 1953. Mrs. Swafford operated Swafford’s Boarding House from 1915 to 1954 when she moved to Abilene. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and the River Oaks Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Abilene. Survivors include one son, Warren of Abilene; one sister, Mrs. Otto Howard of Abilene; and one brother, Floyd Coleman of Olton.

Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Howard Swain, 86, a former Childress resident, will be at 2 p.m. today at Newberry Chapel with J. R. Chism, minister of the Childress Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  She died at 1:40 p.m. Friday, February 27, 1977, in St Anthony’s hospital in Amarillo. She had been living with a  daughter for the past two years.  Born September 15, 1890 to William and Mary Howard, in Red Clay, Ga., she moved to Childress County about 1912. She married William Swain November 28, 1917, in Childress. He died December 3, 1965.  He was a retired fireman for the Fort Worth and Denver Railway.  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Blake of Amarillo and a grandson, Mike Blake of Yukon, Okla. Pallbearers will be nephews.  Published February 7, 1977

Childress – Funeral services for Cagle C. Teague, 25-year-old Childress High School teacher who died Saturday morning in a Quanah hospital, a victim of infantile paralysis, will be conducted at the First Baptist church here this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Teague died at 7 o’clock Saturday morning, less than 24 hours after his illness had been definitely diagnosed as paralysis. He had been ill since Monday and was taken to the Quanah hospital Wednesday night. The funeral will be conducted this afternoon by Rev. Luther Crawford of Newlin, assisted by Rev. Orion W. Carter of the First Methodist church and Rev. Frank Travis of the Presbyterian church here. Burial will be in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral home. Some health authorities were consulted and have approved a public funeral.  Pallbearers will be Charles Damron, Joe Gibson, A. M. Myers of Canyon, Ronald Davis of Wellington, Steve Matthews of Borger and Kenneth Kendricks of Phillips.  Flowerbearers will be Misses Jean Graham, Elizabeth Huggins, R. E. Gentry, Ernestine Walker, Paulyne Rutledge, Mildred Wilson, Martha Kite, Mrs. Charles Damron and Mrs. J. D. Barkley Jr.  Born Dec 24, 1913, the son of Ben J. and Minnie Johnson Teague, he was reared in Childress county.  He attended the Rivercamp school, then came to Childress for high school work where he was graduated in 1931.  He was an outstanding athlete during the time he attended high school and was a regular fullback on the Bobcat football team for three years. He attended West Texas State College at Canyon where he also participated in athletics. Childress – Funeral services for Walter Jackson “Jack” Thomas, 63, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Childress Church of Christ with David Howell, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas died about 6;30 p.m. Monday in his home after suffering an apparent heart attack.  Born October 12, 1916, in Comanche County, Texas, he came to Childress with his parents about 1920 and attended Community Center schools. He farmed for a time and worked at the Veterans Building and Royal Park Fashions. He served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the 40 and 8. He married Laverne Jost May 24, 1965, in Childress. Survivors include his widow, Laverne, of the home; one son, Darrell, of the home; two step sons, Randy Thomas of Wellington and Gary Jost of Maypearl, Texas; two brothers, Amy Thomas of Dumas and Barney Thomas of Pontiac, Mich.; five sisters, Mrs. Charlie Jones, Mrs. Vivian Jones, and Mrs. Muriel Ralston, all of Childress, Mrs.Eunice Leeper of Clarendon and Mrs. R. Childress – Charles T. Tipton, 73, passed away in the Twilight Rest home Tuesday morning at 4;30 o’clock. Tipton was born on October 31, 1886 in Itasca, Texas, A retired grocery man and baker, he had been a resident of Childress for about six years and had been in ill health for several years. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Vern Wisdom of Panhandle and Mrs. R. L. Lindsay of Wichita Falls. The body was taken to Cordell, Okla., Tuesday morning by a Newberry ambulance for funeral services and burial. Published November 19, 1957

Childress – Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Bentley Trent, 62 year-old native of Childress, was at 2 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor, officiated and burial was in the Childress Cemetery by the Newberry Funeral Home. Nephews were pallbearers  Mrs. Trent died at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Carlsbad, NM, where she had lived for the past 17 years. She was born in Childress, October 9, 1912, married Oscar Trent, August 2, 1947, in Wellington and they moved to Carlsbad. Survivors include the husband of the home, three sisters, Mrs. R. O. Law Sr., of Childress, Mrs. J. D. Goode of Wichita Falls, and Mrs. Ruby Simpson of Decatur; two stepsons, Larten Trent of Fort Worth and John Trent of Seattle.  Published January 9, 1975

Childress – Rites For Finney John Trones Held Monday.  Funeral services for Finney John Trones, 48, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Price, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Mr. Trones was fatally stabbed Friday, August 21, 1980, in Wichita Falls. No leads have been released by the Wichita Falls police.  Born August 17, 1931, on Vashon Island, Washington, he came here from Wichita Falls in 1968 and married Mary Corgill on October 8 of that year. He served in the Air Force and was a member of Childress American Legion Post 65 and Childress VFW Post 2512.  His other memberships included First United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge in Amarillo. He and his wife were owners of J&M Electric of Childress. Survivors include his widow, and two sons, Martin and John Trone Jr. and granddaughter Leslie Shannon. VAUGHN*

Childress – Funeral services for Sim K. Vaughn, age 59, were held Saturday, December 30th at 2 p.m. in the Childress Church of Christ with Auther Judd, minister, officiating, assisted by Bill Craig, minister of the Church of Christ in Elk City, Okla. Interment was held in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mr. Vaughn was rushed to the Childress General hospital at 1;30 a.m. by the Childress Ambulance Service suffering from an apparent stroke. He died at 10;25 a.m. the same morning. Born September 20, 1913. in Erick Oklahoma, Mr. Vaughn came to Childress in 1948 from Erick. He and Fay Eatherly worked together in Erick where Mr. Eatherly was manager of the Coop Gin there and Mr. Vaughn was the assistant manager for 10 years. Mr. Vaughn supervised the building of the elevator of the Eatherly Cotton Co. and was partners with Mr. Eatherly until he went to work for the First State Bank in 1963. He was a past elder of the Church of Christ, a director of the First State Bank, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Four Winds Resource Conservation and Development Area Executive Board and was honored in 1971 for his outstanding work done for Soil Conservation. He is survived by his wife, Audie, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Perry Morren of Childress, Mrs. Jerry Williamson of Hondo and Mrs. Keith Fanning of Hereford, one brother, Richard Vaughn of Sand Springs, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Tommy O’Connell of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. R. W. McCampbell of Erick, Oklahoma and Mrs. H. T. Vandemeer of Oklahoma City, Okla; and six grandchildren.  Pallbearers were Eddie Johnson, Teddy Hightower, Bud Gooch, Houston Wrinkle, Joe Cooper, Don Miller and Van Bearden.  Honorary pallbearers were C. Childress - William Wallace Waldie, age 71, died at 6 p.m. Friday, June 14th at Childress General hospital.  He was born on June 9, 1892 in Hillsboro, Texas and came to Childress about 20 years ago from Amarillo.  Survivors include 6 sons; C.A. Waldie of Colorado Springs, Colorado, C. W. Waldie of Dallas, Oliver and A. P. Waldie of California, George and Edd Waldie both of Childress; one daughter, Mrs. Marie Tiller of Denver; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  Graveside services were held at 5;30 p.m. Monday at Childress cemetery conducted by Rev. Luther Bradley, pastor of the Bible Baptist church. Burial was under direction of Newbery funeral home.  Published June 20, 1963

 

WALKER*

Childress – Mrs. Vera Maye Stone Walker, age 58, of Childress passed away Tuesday morning, February 27, in Temple. She had been a patient at Scott and White Clinic for some time, but apparently was doing better and her family was making plans to bring her home this weekend. She was born July 15, 1909 in Oklahoma. She came to Childress in 1928 from Vernon and was married to Ben Rufus Walker, November 11, 1933 in Childress. Mrs. Walker was a member of the First Baptist church and an active worker.  She had been bookkeeper for the Childress Independent School District for 17 years. Mrs. Walker had been active in all school activities.  She had many other interests.  She was president this year of the Bobcat Mothers and had been secretary and treasurer of the Childress Riding Club since its organization. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and served as secretary.  Funeral services were today, Thursday, at 4 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe S. Allen officiating.  Burial was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Her survivors include her husband, Ben; one son, Ben Bob Walker, who is a senior student this year in Childress High School; one daughter, Marilyn Joye Walker, a sophomore student in Clarendon College, and also an employee of the Childress Independent School District in the administration office. She has one brother, Ray C. Stone of Wichita Falls. Pallbearers were D. C. Bradley, D. W. Scott, L. H. Felton, Bobby Hart, Lewis Meinzer, Jimmie Harman, Aubrey Rogers, and M. E. Childress – Mrs. Ella Means Watkins, mother of the late Elven Watkins, died Monday morning in the Quanah hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral service was held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday from the First Baptist church in Quanah with the pastor, Dr W. E. Norman, officiating. Ella was the daughter of Lewis Wright Means and his wife, Mary Francis Pierson of Decatur. Mrs. Watkins was buried beside her husband, Charles Temple Watkins, whom she married at Decatur, Texas, June 28, 1892, He was a pioneer merchant who came to Quanah in 1902 and established and owned the Watkins Department Store in Quanah. WEATHERBEE*

Childress -  Mrs. Martha Elizabeth “Lizzie” Weatherbee of Childress died in a Sherman hospital at 9:30 o’clock Tuesday morning. She was 59 years old.  Mrs. Weatherbee, a long-time resident of Childress has been spending the past few months visiting with her children and at the time of her death was visiting in Sherman with a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Kirkland.  Survivors include three other daughters, Nancy Weatherbee and Mrs. Leata Mae O’Daniels of Pantex and Mrs. Lucille Thomas of Snyder, and two sons, J. A. Weatherbee of Rankin and Jake Weatherbee of Childress. Published August 14, 1956

 

WEBB*

Childress – Oldest Citizen Dies Tuesday.  Ellen Young Webb, wife of J.. N. Webb of this city, died Tuesday morning, May 10h, 1922, at 9 o’clock Mrs. Webb was born April 5th, 1831, being 91 years, one month and five days old.  She was born in Casual County, Virginia. They resided there after the war. Mr. Webb was a soldier in the Southern Army. They moved to Denton, Texas, in 1878 and to Childress County in 1887.  Mr. Webb is one year younger than his departed wife.  To them were born eleven children – six boys and five girls. Of these, three boys and three girls survive, they being Mrs. E. N. Billingslye of Childress, and Mrs. Hatti Homer of Seattle, Washington, and Mrs. Leona O’Brien of Seattle, Washington;  Chas. Greiver and Will of this city.  Mrs. Webb was a member of the Baptist church, having  joined about forty years ago.  In early life she was a regular attendant and worker in the church. During the past few years, Mrs. Webb had become so feeble that she was unable to get about without assistance. She lived with her son, Will, at whose home she passed away. Mrs. Webb maintained a cheerful frame of mind to the end. She was able to tell much interesting history of early days. She learned to smoke a pipe when a girl and within two days of her death would ask for her pipe, although is was necessary for others to hold it while she smoked.  Mrs. Webb was a noble woman and many good deeds are to her credit in the world beyond. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the residence of  W, W. Webb. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. Geo. A. Curlee, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Childress. Published May 12, 1922

Childress – C. F. Webb is buried Tuesday afternoon. Services were held at 4 o’clock, Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of Stewart Carter Funeral Home for Charles Franklin Webb, who died late Monday afternoon in the Childress General Hospital. Rev. Bill Cawthorn, nephew of the late Mr. Webb, of Vernon, Texas, conducted the final rites. Pallbearers were Bill King, Dean King, Watsey Leach, Harold Cawthorn, Roy Philpott, and Homer Cawthorn.  Charles Franklin Webb was born in Saltville, Virginia, December 1, 1865. He moved here with his family in 1890.  Mr. Webb married the former Nora Mae King of this city in 1896, and established their home here until 1928, at which time they moved to DeQueen, Arkansas, to make their home, returning to Childress in 1943. He is survived by his wife, Nora Mae, one sister, Mrs. E. N. Billingsley; two nieces, Mrs. Roy Philpott and Mrs. Allie Gibson, all of this city.  Burial was in the Childress Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Carter Funeral Home.  Published July 30, 1952

Quanah June 6, 1936. - J. L. Webb, a resident of Hardeman county for the past 20 years, died at the Memorial hospital here Friday morning.  He had been in bad health for several years but had only been under treatment at the hospital for the past week. The body was taken overland by B. H. Smith Undertaking company to Romney, Texas where funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the First Methodist Church. Burial was made in the Romney cemetery.  Mr. Webb came to Quanah from Eastland County in 1916 and was engaged in farming one mile east of town. Surviving are his widow, six children and a host of grandchildren. The children are: Dr. J. W. Webb of Hedley, J. C. Webb of Childress, M. W. Webb, Carl Webb, Mrs. Jack Taylor and Mrs. Walt Beasley, all of Quanah. Published Sunday, June 7, 1936

Childress – Leslie Tandy Webb, age 72, passed away Sunday morning at 4 a. m. February 25, 1968, in the Bethania hospital in Wichita Falls. Funeral services were Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Newberry Chapel, with Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor of the First Baptist church, and Theo McKeever officiating.  Burial was in the Carey cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Mr. Webb was born January 8, 1896 in Palestine, Texas. He came to Childress in 1920 from East Texas, and for a while, farmed near Carey. He 3was a retired automobile painter and he worked for the C. B. Gloar Motor Company. He married Gurena Gloar, January 13, 1926 in Memphis, Texas. He moved to Wichita falls in 1960 from Childress. He had retired at the time of his death. He was a World War I veteran. Mr. Webb is survived by his wife, Gurena Webb of Wichita Falls, four sons; Lester Webb and David Webb both of Wichita Falls, Benjamin F. Webb in Germany, and Kenneth Webb of Plano; one brother, O. E. Webb of Lubbock; one sister, Mrs. Beatrice McKeever of Kirkland; and six grandchildren.  Pallbearers were A. Beaver, Bernie Steed, Reuben Arnold, Jim Moody, Tom Preston, and Royall King.  Assistingbearers were Robert Fanter, John Fainter, both of Austin, Joe Mullinex, Bill Sager, Walter Lambert Jr. Carl Denny, Rowden Cordell, Crews Bell and Dr. Jack Fox, all of Childress. Childress – Funeral service for Mrs. Mary A. Taylor Wells, age 67, was held Monday, December 21 at 10 a.m. in the Newberry Chapel with Auther C. Judd, minister of the Church of Christ, officiating.  Burial was in the Kirkland Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Mrs. Wells died at 5 p.m. December 16 at the Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. She was bon February 8, 1903 in Hereford and was an old timer in the Kirkland community. She had lived in Washington, D. C. for the past four years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John A. (Billie) Renfroe, Jr. of Washington, D. C.  Mrs. Renfroe is the former Billie Storm of Childress, the daughter of the late Henry Storm.  Mrs. Wells is also survived by one grandson, John A. Renfroe, III and one great grandson, John A. Renfroe, IV; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Payne of McLean and Mrs. Ruby Crenshaw of Orlando, Florida; and five brothers, Ira Taylor of Amarillo, Noah Taylor of Dallas, Jim Taylor of Lodi, California, B. F. Taylor of Los Angeles, California and Grover R. Taylor of Atwater, California.  Pallbearers were George Payne, Gus McDaniel, Andy Lee Harp, Luther Brown, Wilburn Adams and L. H. Childress – Services for Reno Whitley, 74, of 3710 Van Buren Street Amarillo, are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Southlawn Assembly of God with the Rev Jerald Middough and the Rev. C. V. Davis officiating.  Mr. Reno Whitley died Thursday, October 15, 1999. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors. Born in Floydada, he moved to Amarillo 52 years ago. He and the former Dorothy Wright were married in 1947 at Childress. He was a street foreman for the City of Amarillo, served with the U. S. Army during World War II and was with the 182nd chemical Mortar Battalion, St. Luis France, Normandy Invasion. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Amarillo; two sons, Kenneth Whitley of Amarillo and Terry Whitley of Albuquerque,; one daughter, Doris Williams, of Amarillo, two sisters, Bonnie Love of Plainview and Bessie Grimes of Amarillo; two brothers, Earl Whitley and Austin Whitley, both of Amarillo, 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Childress – Mrs. Bessie Wiley, age 69, the former Bessie Idella Teague, died in Amarillo Wednesday, December 23 at 11 a.m.  Funeral service was held Thursday, December 24 at 2 p.m. in the Blackburn-Shaw funeral chapel in Amarillo. Burial was in the Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Mrs. Wiley married E. C. Wiley in 1922.  Mr. Wiley preceded her in death in 1951. Survivors include two sons, Floyd M. and Donald; one daughter, Mrs. Bill Hudson, all of Amarillo; two brothers, Marvin Teague and Weldon W. Teague, both of Childress; four sisters, Mrs. A. B. Smith of McAlister, Oklahoma, Mrs. J. F. Childress – Louis Carl Williams, age 65, died Tuesday, April 17, in the Veterans Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born September 17, 1896 in Wolfe City Texas. Mr. Williams was inspector for the State Tax Commission in Arizona. He was a member of the Childress Masonic Lodge No. 695, Order of the Moose, member of the Shriners, Elks Lodge, American Legion and a World War I veteran.  Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Jame Ewaniak of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mrs. Margaret Johnson of Lamar, Colorado; one son, Captain Robert Williams stationed in San Antonio; two brothers, Glenn Williams of Clarendon, and Henry Williams of Stinnett; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Phoenix Thursday, April 19, and the body was shipped by rail and graveside services were held at 2 pm. Saturday, conducted by Rev.. L. L. Hill, pastor of the First Methodist church.  Burial was made in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Published April 23, 1962

Childress – Final rites for William Kyle “Chinney” Williams, 66, were to be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor, and Rev, James Price, pastor of First United Methodist church officiating.  Burial was to be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home.  Pallbearers were Hope Bratcher, Ed Anderson, Buddy McKeever, C. B. McKeever, Buster Garner and Billy Farris.  Mr. Williams died at 4;45 p, m. Wednesday, February 24, 1977 in Hall County Hospital at Memphis after a brief illness. Born March 29,1910, in Childress County to Jim Williams and wife, he attended Garden Valley Schools and farmed in that community until his retirement.  He and the former Miss Jetta V. Albright were married December 29, 1935, in Hollis, Okla. Survivors are his wife of the home; one daughter, Linda Gale Williams, and a son, Jim Bob Williams, both of Childress; two brothers, Hal Neal Williams of Mineral Wells and Glen Williams of Fort Worth; sister, Mrs. Faye Stanfield of Childress, and four grandchildren.. WILLIAMSON

Amarillo – Final rites were held today for Dorman Williamson, young West Texas State College student who was fatally injured in an auto/ truck accident east of Amarillo Friday, January 30, 1949.  Miss Patsy Hudson and W. E., Bassinger of Fort Worth also died as a result of the accident. High school classes were let out at 1 p.m. to allow students to attend the funeral of the popular ex-Bobcat. Services were conducted at the First Methodist church by Rev. E, E, White and  W. H. Colson. Burial was in the Childress Cemetery by the Newberry Funeral Home. Pallbearers, honorary pallbearers, and flower girls were composed of college and high school student friends of Williamson’s. Dorman was born October 27, 1929, at Kirkland, the son of Thomas and Birdie Close Williamson. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Betty Lou Spear and Kathleen Williamson. Published January 30, 1949

Childress – Funeral services for Deual Woods, 66, formerly of Childress, are set Monday in San Diego, Calif. He died Thursday in San Diego. Burial will be in that city.  While in Childress, Mr. Woods was employed by The Childress Index. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle, of the home, a daughter, Mary Aline of Pine Bluff, Calif., a son, Ron of Phoenix, Ariz., four sisters Lorreta Boyd of Childress, Janella Altman of Clarendon, Carol Jean Turner of Crain, and Alvalie Creech of Dallas and three grandchildren. Published June 12, 1983

Childress – Roy Oliver Yarbrough, 75, passed away on March 7 at the Underwood Hospital in Amarillo.  Funeral services were held in Amarillo at the N. S. Griggs & Sons funeral chapel on Sunday, March 8, with Rev. Joe S. Allen, pastor of the Childress First Baptist church, officiating. Interment was in the Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Yarbrough was formerly a resident of Carey and was a member of the Carey Baptist church. He had moved to Amarillo over a year ago. Survivors include his wife,  Mrs. Eula Bell Yarbrough; one daughter, Mrs. Grace Turner of Amarillo; and six sons, R. A. of Childress, Delton of Fort Worth, Texas, and W. W., Glenn, James and Lewis of Amarillo. There are 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren to survive. Out of town friends attending the funeral were Milburn Moore, J. B. Johnson and Wesley Kiker of Childress; L. C. Trent, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Myers and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Moates of Carey; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Michael and Mrs. Jimmy Darby of Houston; Mrs. Lou Ann Hewett of Mountainair, N. M.; and James Vestal of Albuquerque, N. M. Published March 19, 1959.

 

YEARY

Childress – Charles Yeary to be buried in Lubbock. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lubbock for Charles Yeary, 46, son of Mrs. E. W. Yeary and brother of Mrs. Duke Holland, both of Childress.  Interment will be in a Lubbock cemetery.  Mr. Henry died at 7 a.m. Monday, October 19, 1969, en route to a Lubbock hospital, after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born and reared in Childress, but had been a resident of Lubbock for the past 20 years.  Survivors include his wife, Catherine, of the home and two daughters, Charlene and Catherine Jean, both of Lubbock; brother, Winston Yeary of Fort Worth; sister, Mrs. Duke Holland of Childress; and mother, Mrs. E. W. Yeary of Childress.. Published October 21, 1969.
