His wife Roberta Helen MAULDIN WOMACK, b. 8/17/1872 in Mississippi, d. 4/22/1966 Gainesville (also buried there). They were married 1/5/1896. QRYTEXT: In the book "Early History of Cooke County", there is a story about a guy on trial for murder, think his second one. Anyway he got out after first one, went home to Cooke Co. where his mother & sisters lived & decided to make an entrance. Next day was Sun. so put on his guns & went to church. Mr. or Rev. Cooke was preaching, the guy walked all the way to the front, preacher stopped until the guy sat down then started preaching again. The killer killed right after that again. Believe this was about 1890. Would like the name of the killer and if there is more to the story that too. I believe the killer & the preacher were related to me.

Eula had and Aunt Dora and and Uncle Oscar that she wrote of that lived in Indian Territory. I believe their last name was White. Any information you could give concerning Eula Goggin would be greatly appreciated. Her return address on her correspondence was 915 E. Scott Street, Gainesville, Texas.

I believe that he lived in Cooke County in the 1860-1880 time period but have been unable to locate him on any census record. I believe that Elijah Gray was his son. Elijah Gray married Jocie A Shelton, daughter of William Shelton about 1866 and my grandfather Andrew Jackson Gray was born to them in 1867. She was age 12 in the 1860 Cooke Co federal census living with her father William Shelton and family. They moved to Falls County Texas between 1860 and 1870. Elijah Gray moved to Ellis Co in the 1860's. In 1870 there were 2 WHEAT girls living with Elijah in Ellis Co. In 1880 he and wife Sarah had two children and 2 half sisters of Elijah, Jeminia and Virginia living with him. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Tom's wife's name was Mattie Sue Poole (Poole is her maiden name.) Mattie was previously married with the last name of Melton. I have a copy of Marshall Walker Tuttle's birth certificate that reflects his father Tom being born in Oklahoma. I hope to get a copy of a marriage certificate for Tom Tuttle and Mattie (Poole) Melton to see if it provides any additional information. They were probably married somewhere around 1900 - 1902 I would appreciate any other information that would allow me to track Tom and Mattie. I am most interested in where Tom was born and where he went to. He abandoned his family when Marshall was very small. Tom was around 50 years old at the time and was listed as a saloon owner. Please let me know of any information that may help in my search. I would be happy to order a copy of a marriage certificate or birth certificate if I know what to request. Without the dates and locations I don't know what to ask for. Thank you for your assistance. Mary Tuttle (661) 254-6139

QRYTEXT: I would like to exchange a few emails with anyone who may have information about the family of Charles and Mary WILSON who lived in Dexter, Cooke County, Texas sometime between the years 1880 and 1920. Charles was born in Illinois about 1855 and died in Oklahoma in 1950. He married Mary MARSHALL (or MEADE; not sure!) during the early 1880s. Mary was born about 1856 in Texas (hoping it is Cooke County!). Charles and Mary had 2 children, both born in Dexter: Susan "Susie" Elizabeth WILSON was born in 1885 and married Samuel Hobart ROBERTSON of Paris, Texas in about 1905. George Pinkston WILSON was born in 1887 and married Cassie Hanna MARSHALL (b. 1892 in Texas) about 1909. Charles is a brother of my great grandfather, Thomas Edward WILSON, who lived from time to time with his brother's family in Dexter during the 1880s. My ultimate wish is to find some clues from Charles' family that may help in chipping away the brick wall surrounding their parent's identity. It took me almost 8 years to narrow down Charles' residence to Dexter, Cooke County!!! Hopefully, another clue or two will prove to be the "sledgehammer" I have been looking for.

Does anyone have access to the book "Early Days in Cooke Co" by C N Jones? There is a reference to James A Powers on p 18. I surely would like to have that information. The Ware Cemetery site says he was hung by vigalantes in 1862 and has a photo of his tombstone. I will appreciate any help on this. Thanks Grace

QRYTEXT: I am seeking information on a WOLF family with roots in Baxter County, AR and who came to Cooke County about 1867. Several members of the family came this far and then went on deeper into Texas to Bell, Coryell counties and then evidently came back to the county where Urah Lee Wolf married Dora McGinnis in Nov 1889. Urah was listed as born in Texas and his mother died about 1871 in probably Belle Co., TX. She was Sarah Adams and her parents and siblings were with the group who came from AR. Urah and Dora had a son Jessie L. Wolf born either in Cooke Co., TX or IT in OK. Other members of this family were George Washington Wolf, Amanda Wolf Tinnin, Josiah Settles, and Warren Wolf who lived in Cooke County but married in Bryan County, IT. I would appreciate correspondance from any descendants of this Wolf family. They were children and grandchildren of Major Jacob Wolf of Norfork, AR and came to the area at the end of the Civil War. Any clue would be appreciated. dbton@yahoo.com

SURNAMES: COGBURN
QRYTEXT: COGBURN OF COOKE COUNTY - One of my brick walls for so long has been my grt gf Wm I COGBURN's father and beyond. Wm was born in Ark April 1872 after the death of his father and we do not have his name. Wm's mother was Louisa WHITE COGBURN and after the death of her husband she married Adam WHISENHUNT; they, Wm, & his half siblings came to Tx in 1880's; some of the children were born in Hunt Co (as late as 1890) and they moved on to Taylor Co where they settled. I have been aware of many COGBURN's in COOKE CO but have never had information to tie my line there. Talked to my aunt tonight who had seen an obit in the paper abt a wk ago of a Mr. Pruett who was buried at the COGBURN CEMETERY, COOKE CO. She in turn had called my grt aunt who said "Oh, yeah, Papa had lots of relatives in COOKE CO". So now I have many questions and much work to do. I suppose one thing that would be helpful to me at this point is to ask -- do "all" the COOKE CO COGBURN families seem to tie together or were there multiple branches that did not appear to be related? Also, the people being buried in the COGBURN CEMETERY at this point, are they necessarily related to the COGBURN family? Does anyone remotely have info concerning a young COGBURN(his wife was 18 at the time) who died 1871-72 probably in Ark leaving behind a young pregnant wife, no other children to our knowledge? One older cousin is confused but thinks that either Wm or his father was a twin and the twin died; we have no info that Wm was a twin and think maybe it was his father, but it could be. Wm's father was reportedly killed, possibly in an accident with a horse, rather than died from illness. She also is thinking perhaps Wm was born in Hope, which means very likly this is where his father died. Wm, his mother and step father were in Howard Co census 1880. Wm reportedly per another grt aunt, now deceased, had uncles Geo. & Andy who came to visit him in Taylor Co TX from Ark; family history is that they were hiding out from the law at that time. We have found that Henry (have seen sources report his birth as both TN & SC) & Emmeline Margaret Johnson COGBURN had sons by the name of Geo & Andrew as well as a Wm b. TN 1851, which would be an appropriate date for our Wm's father. There seems to be descendant info on Henry's children, but not on Wm; could he have died young & our Wm named for his father? I find that Henry & Margaret were in COOKE CO making this all the more interesting now. Is there anyone out there with family history and/or stories, etc, that can shed a clue on my Wm. COGBURN'S father and his family? Anything at all would be so appreciated. Thanks, Sandra
