Longview Women's Federation of Clubs

This federation of women's clubs was organized in January of 1934. Miss Virginia L. Kelly was the very first president. There were a total of 10 clubs that formed this charter membership. They were: Shakespeare Club, Philomathea Club, Longview Music Club, the Longview Little Theatre, The Elizabeth Browing Study Club, The Ex-C.I.A., the Longview Garden Club, two different Delphian groups and the American Legion Auxiliary Club.

Their first order of business was to provide a greater strength and purpose fo increased community service. The very first thing to do was the construction of a community center of the Longview area, a beautification program, a health education program, and to rally support for the city's cultural development.

By the second year of the organization, a small piece of land at the corner of Whaley and 2nd Street had been bought for the location of a community center. A wood building was bought and moved to the lot for a temperorary meeting spot. They were successful in getting the Gregg County Commissioner's Court interested in the construction of a more permanent building, with all the furnishings to be provided by the women's organization. The contract stipulated that the Federation would have to completely manage the building. In 1939, the new community center was finished and they held the dedication as a city wide festival.
