First Gregg County Election

On motion of Mr. Harris, it was resolved to designate one place in each Precinct as a place of registration and the following were selected. In Precinct No. 1, Longview. In Precinct No. 2, at Walker's Store. In Precinct No. 3, at Davenport's Mill. In Precinct No. 4, at Welborne's Store. In Precinct No. 5, at Gladewater."

The Commissioners further ordered and had entered of Record in Book A, page 5, Minutes of the County Court of Gregg County, the holding of an election for County officials, and the location of the County Seat. The order reads:

"On motion of Mr. Buttrill, it was resolved to hold an election at Longview for County Officers, and location of County Seat, to commence Wednesday, June 25, and continue four days."

The town of Longview, having received the majority of all the votes cast at said election for the County Seat of Gregg County, it was declared selected.

The Commissioners appointed to organize the County, again met on July 21, 1873
and approved the bonds of the County officers as made and filed, Book A, Pages 13-14, namely:

"R. B. Levy, clerk of District Court, July 11, 1873 at 11:00 A.M., M. L. Durham, Sheriff, July 19, 1873, at 3 1/2 o'clock P.M., B. Buttrill, County Treasurer, July 19, 1873 at 3:25 o'clock P.M."

The Constitution of the 1869 in force at the time of the creation of the County in 1873 provided only for the election of a District Clerk of the Counties who was to perform all duties of a clerk and Recorder. The county Clerk, for a County, additional to a Districk Clerk, was provided for in the Constitution of 1876, Section 20 of Article 5.
