Arnold, Thelma "Chety" Thelma David Rushing Arnold, better known as "Chety," was born the fifth of seven children, to H.I. and Shel Rushing, on March 26, 1941. The Lord took her home on October 18, 2006, after a 15-month long battle with cancer. Chety was married to Rex Arnold in 1958, and she lived in Nacogdoches, LaMarque, Hurst, Longview, Gilmer, and White Oak; wherever Rex's coaching or the kids' schooling moved them. She was always the model homemaker, as demonstrated by her delight in cooking, sewing, painting, and teaching. In 1987, she remodeled and opened the Tuttle House in White Oak where her chicken salad, crepes, and pies were legendary. Her father was a Baptist preacher and Chety came to faith in Christ at an early age, and was always devoted to her local church. She loved to sing in the choir, teach Sunday school classes, lead vacation Bible school, and participate in mission trips. When Rex retired in 1995, they sold their home in White Oak and became full-time RVers. They traveled all over the country building churches with Texas Baptist Men, forming great friendships, and seeing incredible sights. When it was time to settle down again, the Lord led them to the perfect spot -- "the farm" in Longview, where she remained until her death, under the loving care of her family members and the capable hands of Heart'sWay Hospice. Chety is survived by her husband, Rex, of 48 years; three daughters, Stephanie Hooks of Longview, Charlotte Taylor and husband, James, of Liberty City, and Jennifer Pliler and husband, Darby, of Hallsville; one son, Brad Arnold and his wife, Kim, of Nampa, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family is grateful for all the expressions of kindness, the prayers, the visits, and the helping hands during this past year. God has been so good, and we are so very thankful for His faithfulness. The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Liberty City. Memorial contributions may be sent to 429 Mobil Road, Longview, TX 75604. Published in the Longview News-Journal on 10/20/2006.
