Burton, James G. "Red" KILGORE -- Services for Red Burton, 96, of Kilgore will be 2 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2006, at First Christian Church with the Rev. John Burton, the Rev. Dr. Walter Naff, the Rev. Bill Blanks, Jim Kelly and Lovell Aldrich officiating. Burial will follow in Kilgore Cemetery. Mr. Burton died Thursday, February 23, 2006, in Kilgore. He was born February 19, 1910, in Johnson County, Texas. Mr. Burton graduated from Cleburne High School, attended two years at Texas A&M, and in 1935, he earned his baccalaureate degree in Geology from Texas Tech University. He was employed by the Plymouth Oil Company before going to work for Shell Oil in 1935. Mr. Burton was a captain in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. McCullough Tool Company employed him before the war, and they honored his job after the war. Mr. Burton started his own company in 1951, the Technical Services Company. He later owned and operated Red Burton Well Testing Company. Mr. Burton was a longtime member of the AIME, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. He also was a longtime member of the API, the American Petroleum Institute, which he originated and organized for over 25 years, and the API Golf Tournament at Meadowbrook Country Club. Mr. Burton was a past board member of the East Texas Treatment Center. He was a longtime member of the Meadowbrook Country Club where he was past president and board member. He was a 50-year Mason and a member of Sharon Shrine Temple. Mr. Burton was a member of First Christian Church for many years, where he served as an Elder and a Trustee of the church. He represented their church as a board member at the Disciples Crossing Camp. Mr. Burton is survived by his wife, Miriam Burton of Kilgore; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. John and Phyllis Burton of Irving, Texas; a daughter, Cindy Burton Mosby of Rockwall; five grandchildren, Donna and Mike Ritter of Knoxville, Tennessee, Charity and Matt Johnson of Blue Springs, Missouri, Aaron and Victoria Burton of Galveston, Joy Burton of Irving, Molly Mosby of Rockwall; four great-grandchildren, Chris, Trevor and Dillon Ritter, of Knoxville, Aubrey Jean Johnson of Blue Springs; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two children, Sandra Burton Smith and Jimmy Burton. The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home this evening.
