Submitted by Linda Piper Longview Daily News 11 - 28 - 1947 Page 1A Rites Held For Mrs. Ida Butts East Texas Pioneer Dies At Home Here After Long Illness Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Butts, 85, widely-knowan East Texas pioneer, were held Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian church with Rev. Thomas Talbot, officiating. Mrs. Butts died Wednesday night at her home, 418 South High street, following a lengthy illness. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery under the direction of Welch's. the death of Mrs. butts removes from this section one of Gregg county's most cultured women. For many years Mrs. Butts taught a private school, with many of Longview's prominet citizens former students of the school. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian church and up until the time of her illness she taught a Sunday school class, was an officer in the Woman's auxiliary and took an active part in all phases of church work. She was a brilliant Bible student, and was known for her unusual personality and keen sense of humor. Mrs. Butts traveled extensively throughout the United States and European countries. She was a charter member of R. B. Levy chapter, Daughters of Confederacy, a member of the Shakespeare club and other organizations. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, and other relatives living in Longview, Kilgore and Henderson. Pallbearers were: John Harrison, Eugene McWhorter, Paul Culver, F. J. Miller, Gay Glover, Curtis Morris, Kelly Dickson and Dr. Tom Francis.
