Gattis, Ruth Johnston Ruth Johnston Gattis, 87, of Longview, passed away peacefully at her home on June 12, 2007. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2007, at the chapel of Rader Funeral Home. The Reverend Jerry Turner will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Ruth was born March 19, 1920, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She attended the University of Manitoba, earning a bachelor's degree in home economics. She and her first husband, Raymond Johnston, moved to the United States in 1949, and they finally settled in Longview, Texas in 1956, where they raised their three sons. Ruth continued her education, earning a master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. She was a longtime economics teacher at Longview High School and after her retirement continued her volunteer activities with organizations such as Meals on Wheels, FUMC Library, Asbury House, Terrific Tuesday at Wesley UMC, and others. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, sewing, playing Bridge, and most of all, gardening. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond Johnston, Louis Cook and William Rowland. Survivors include her husband, James Gattis; sons, Marc Johnston of San Luis Obispo, California, Jon Johnston and wife, Sandy of Henderson and Paul Johnston of Shreveport, Louisiana; and grandchildren, Carrie Johnston and Leah Johnston of West Palm Beach, Florida, Susan Johnston Webster and husband, Michael of St. Paul, Minnesota, Spencer Johnston of San Diego, California, and Max Johnston of San Luis Obispo, California. Pallbearers will be Bill Preston, Wayne Overall, Frank McBride, Michael Webster, Max Johnston and Casey Camamck. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Library, 400 N. Fredonia, Longview, TX 75601. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Friday, preceding the services.
