Gattis, James E. Funeral service for James E. Gattis, 89, of Longview, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2007, at the chapel of Rader Funeral Home, with the Reverend Jerry Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Mr. Gattis passed away on Tuesday October 9, 2007, in Longview. Mr. Gattis was born January 5, 1918, in Ratcliff, Ark. His family moved to Texas in 1921, and settled in Sour Lake, an oil field town in southeast Texas. After high school, Jim spent four years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and shortly afterward began his career with the Federal Aviation Administration in air traffic control. He retired in 1973, and he went to work with the Gregg County Tax Office for the next 10 years. Mr. Gattis was a giving, caring man who lived every minute of his life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Gattis was preceded in death by his wives, Bertha Dunkle, Jeanne Cupples and Ruth Johnston. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Everett Gattis. He is survived by his children, Virginia Ann Tallent and husband, Melvin of Spring Valley, Ariz., and Patricia Fresh of Magnolia; and his grandchildren, Doug Tallent and his wife, Richelle of Desert Hills, Ariz., Ginger Hanlon and her husband, Damian of Glendale, Ariz., Patrick Elder of Magnolia, Angela Wootton and her husband, Mark of Magnolia, and Lynn Taylor and her husband, Kirk of Houston. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Brooke McCough, Garrett Tanner McGough, Katrina Allysa McGough, Davis Gage Hanlon, Dale Allen Tallent, Hannah Regan Hoelzen, Travis Taylor Wootton, Shelby Lynn Taylor and Jett Kyle Taylor. Pallbearers will be Frank McBride, Kirk Taylor, Mark Wootton, Bret Fresh, John Pontello and Paul Johnston. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening, October 12, 2007, at the funeral home. A memorial guestbook may be signed at www.raderfh.com.
