Tuesday August 25, 1931 Mother of Gregg Sheriff is Laid to Rest Monday Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock for Mrs Nancy C. Hayes, 72, mother of Sheriff Martin Hays, of Gregg county, who sucumbed Sunday midnight after a years invalidism. Servives were from the residence of her daughter, Mrs Pearl Stewart, 305 North Fredonia street, with interment in Grace Hill cemetery. Mrs Hays was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, had lived in Texas since 1880 and in Longview for 35 years. Her husband, a farmer, preceded her in death in 1923. For a number of years, Mrs Hays operated the Bodie hotel at the Junction here where she bacame known as "the mother of the Railroad boys," by whom she was especially loved because of her charitable and benefalent feelings toward them. She was a devout member of the Methodist church. Married once before, she is survived by a child of her first marriage, C. F. Johnson of Tyler. Surviving children of her second marriage are Sheriff Martin Hays, Chief Officer Deputy Sheriff Douglas Hays and one daughter, Mrs Pearl Stewart. Officianted at the final rites, was the Rev. James R.
