The victim was identified as Gladys Honeycutt, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Kathy Barlow. Longview Police Department Public Information Officer Mike Healy said an autopsy had been ordered, adding that "there is no foul play suspected." Healy said the victim had sustained third-degree burns on a leg from a gas space heater, but added it is believed the woman died from other causes and fell across the heater. Healy explained the woman was alone in the downstairs apartment and the upstairs neighbors smelled smoke and called the fire department. The fire caused little damage. "It burned a little hole in the carpet, but they didn't even have to use a fire extinguisher to put it out," Healy said. If the autopsy confirms the investigators' theories that Honeycutt died of other causes and then fell on the heater are true, then her death will not be ruled as fire-related, Healy said. To date, two people have died in house fires in the city this year.
