Holloway, Jan Mickle KERRVILLE - Jan McKay Mickle Holloway died peacefully on Saturday, June 30, 2007, in Kerrville, following a short illness. Her husband and daughter were at her bedside. She was born July 1, 1946, in Longview, to Joan McKay Mickle and William Robert Mickle. She graduated from French High School in Beaumont and attended Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York before graduating with a degree in history from the University of Houston. Jan later completed coursework for the master of library science degree at the University of Texas in Austin, and additional courses in information systems at San Jose State University in California. During the course of her life, she was employed in various fields; notably, she was one of the first interns at Dialog, an early database company. Her experiences there led her to start her own enterprise. In the early 1980s, she became one of the first technical editors to work from home using a personal computer. While at the University of Houston, Jan met Robert Reagan Holloway Jr. of Dallas. They were married November 24, 1967. The couple left Texas in 1976 to pursue Bob's postdoctoral studies at the University of California. Their daughter, Leata, was born in 1979, and in 1984, the family settled in the coastal town of Montara, where they remained for the next 18 years. In 2002, Jan and Bob returned to Texas, and have lived in Kerrville since Jan began a career in writing while living in California; she is the author of the psychological suspense novel, White Witch, Blue Lady. She had also published numerous short stories and had been a featured author in the anthologies, Mystery in Mind and Murder Across the Map. She won the 2006 NEWN (formerly New England Writers' Network) Mystery/Suspense Contest. She was working on a new novel, Thicker Than Blood , at the time of her death. She was a member of the writers' groups NovelPro, Sisters In Crime, and the Kerrville Writers Association. In addition, she founded a novel critique group in Kerrville. Jan was an enthusiastic and creative cook who enjoyed entertaining, especially her writing colleagues and the Schreiner University community. She played cello and piano as a young woman and enjoyed rock and roll as well as classical pieces. Among her other interests were genealogy and gardening. She was preceded in death by her father; and her grandmother, Leata Rose Gallaway McKay. Survivors include husband, Bob Holloway; daughter, Leata Holloway; siblings, Gaile Farmer and Lowell Mickle; nieces, Sara and Emily Farmer; nephews, Daniel and Chris Mickle; and mother, Joan Mickle. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Kerrville. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerville.
