Mr. Moore was born September 4, 1923, in Harrison County, to George Belton Moore and Winnie Rouse Moore. He was descended from pioneer families including LaGrone, Reel, and Kuykendall. Roy Moore and Betty Belew were married in Longview in February 1946, after his return from World War II, where he served as a U.S. Army private. He received battle stars for service in all the major European Theater campaigns. For his attempt to rescue a fallen soldier from a mine field, Private First Class Moore was awarded a Certificate of Merit. After the war, Mr. Moore continued his lifelong involvement with golf. Having learned to play on the old Greggton Golf Course, Moore continued to hone his game, having served as golf professional at clubs in East Texas and Louisiana. For many years, he had an ongoing relationship with Longview Country Club. Moore later served as superintendent of grounds at LeTourneau College, and while there, built a golf practice area for use by the students and gave lessons. He wound up his career helping to develop the grounds of the University of Texas at Tyler, retiring in 1986. Prior to the automobile accident, Mr. Moore had been active in the 552nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Association, formed in the 1970's by men who had served together in the war. He made a number of presentations at area schools to preserve the history of World War II. On June 6, 2000, he was the subject of a feature article in the Longview News-Journal about the D-Day Invasion, and was again featured in a November 2000 article about his school presentations. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his brothers, Hulen and George Earl Moore. Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Leigh Hughes of La Mesa, California, and Cheri Smith of Longview; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Adkins of Arlington, James E.
