McCarty, Barbara L. Memorial services for Barbara L. McCarty, 58, formerly of Dallas, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008, at First Lutheran Church of Longview, with the Rev. Phil Fenton officiating. Ms. McCarty died Thursday, February 21, 2008, in Longview, after a lengthy battle with aggressive systemic mastocytosis. Ms. McCarty was born September 25, 1949, in Longview, to Guy Jeffery and Dolores McCarty. She was a 1968 graduate of Longview High School and a 1973 graduate of North Texas State University, earning a bachelor's degree in science in home economics-clothing and textiles. She later received her teaching certification through LeTourneau University's PACT Program in April 2004. She worked for Dallas ISD as a substitute teacher where she retired due to complications of her illness. Ms. McCarty was preceded in death by her father in June of 1996. She is survived by her mother, Dolores McCarty Vanderslice and her husband, Akin of Longview; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Phil Fenton of Longview; her sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Larry Birdwell of Grand Prairie; her brother and sister- in-law, Jeff and Alexis McCarty of Richmond; and her nephews and nieces, Aaron and Ben Fenton of Austin, Liz Fenton of Houston, Sarah Birdwell of Grand Prairie, and Maurine and Lauren McCarty of Richmond. The family is indebted to her physicians who helped her battle this disease while under the care of Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Her family is also thankful for the wonderful and sensitive care she received from Longview doctors, Dr. Olofinlade and Dr. Srinivas Rangu. Additional thanks are expressed to Southern Care, whose loving staff provided care so that Barbara could continue to battle her illness at home with the support of her family and devoted friends.
