Ottman, Herman Gerhart Services for Herman Gerhart Ottman, 88, will be 1 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Ford Chapel of First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dewayne Beaty, Dr. Tim Watson and the Rev. David English officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. today, December 26, 2007, at Welch Funeral Home. He passed away Friday evening December 21, 2007, at his home in Longview. Mr. Ottman was born July 11, 1919, in Longview, to Hans Julius and Ella Petters Ottman, who both came to Texas from Germany. They had met and married in Nederland in 1908. Mr. Ottman lived his entire life in Longview, the community he loved with all his heart. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church since 1928 and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II on Iwo Jima. He married Nelda Pride December 24, 1949, in the Mundy Parlor of First Baptist Church. Mr. Ottman was owner of Ottman's Antique and Furniture Shop and a master craftsman in woodworking and upholstery, which he learned in his father's shop during his early childhood. Many Longview area homes contain examples of his unmatched workmanship. Mr. Ottman was a 50-year plus member of the Pythian Lodge No. 26 and during this time he served in every chair, including 18 years as secretary. He was also a member of the Khorassan No. 269. Mr. and Mrs. Ottman had one son, Mark Gerhart Ottman, born March 7, 1957, who preceded him in death in 2004. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Herbert; and two sisters, Ava Neal and Lillie May Cobb. Mr. Ottman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nelda; his daughter- in-law, Lauren Ottman; his brother, Eric and wife, Barbara; brother- in-law, Frank Cobb; nephews, Collin Neal, John Neal, Eric N. Ottman and Charles Cobb; nieces, Linda Neal Bates and Candice Ottman Haugen; and many cousins, great-nieces, nephews, and lifetime friends. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 209 E.
