Preston, Mabel Schievelbein GLADEWATER -- Mabel Schievelbein Preston, 87, of Gladewater, Texas, went to be with the Lord on April 7, 2006. Mabel was born November 11, 1918, in La Verna, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.N. "Buster" Preston, to whom she had been married 46 years; and brothers, Eugene and Pete Schievelbein. Mabel is survived by her three children, Henry Preston of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Gretchen Sampson of Dallas, Texas, and John Preston of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren, Hank and Greg Preston, Sean, Shane, Steely, and Skyler Sims, and Justin and Jon Mark Preston; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Sims and Peyton Sims. Mabel is also survived by a sister, Helen Huber of Livingston, Texas; and a brother, Gilbert Schievelbein of Atlanta, Georgia. Mabel will be remembered for her hard work, love of the outdoors, and as a "rancher" who took care of three sections of land on horseback with her young son, Henry, on the horse with her, while "Buster" was overseas fighting during World War II. She was an active member of the Gladewater First Methodist Church for more than 50 years and helped raise a considerable amount of money for the church through Creative Christians. Mabel enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Gladewater Garden Club. She was also well-known as an excellent seamstress and was famous for her German cooking. She helped organize the Republican Women's Party in East Texas, was a member of the Eastern Star, and greatly enjoyed her participation in the PTA in the Gladewater schools. She had recently been residing in Dallas, Texas, to be close to her daughter. The family will observe visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday evening, April 8, 2006, at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2006, in Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Harrison Road, Longview, Texas, with the Rev. John Newsome officiating.
