Rogers, Sammie Mayfield A celebration of life for Sammie Mayfield Rogers will be at noon Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, with the Reverend J.D. Palmer officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope Cemetery of Kilgore. Mrs. Rogers departed this earthly realm and entered eternity on May 14, 2007. Sammie Mayfield Rogers was born October 31, 1936, in Kilgore, to Samuel Mayfield Jr. and Mary Irene Thurman Mayfield, who preceded her in death. She was the oldest of nine children born to her parents. In addition to her parents, Samuel and Mary, Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her younger siblings, Willie O. Stafford, Barbara A. Mayfield and T. Lamar Mayfield. Mrs. Rogers attended the Fredonia public schools in Kilgore, and she graduated as valedictorian from Fredonia High School in 1954. She also graduated from Prairie View A&M University and later obtained a master's of education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Mrs. Rogers began a career in teaching immediately upon her graduation from college. She taught in Mount Pleasant, Honey Grove, Gilmer and also, Ned E. Williams in Longview. She last taught second and third grade at Pinewood Park Elementary School and retired in 2001. She dedicated 42 years of service to the children of the state of Texas in the education system. She loved and enjoyed teaching and working with children and helping them achieve. Mrs. Rogers was a very faithful and active member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Longview Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she had served as vice president and president. Mrs. Rogers was also a member of the Heroines of Jericho, Maude Court No. 81. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Hoover B. Rogers; four children, Reginald D. and Shonda Rogers of Longview, Marcus D. and LoResa Rogers of Beaumont, Lisa R. and Gregory Brown of Longview and Sheryl D. and Kenneth McCloney of Beaumont; seven grandchildren, Dorian Rogers, Kendrick McCloney, Jalesa Brown, Roderick McCloney, Alexis McCloney, Julian Rogers and Jeremy Rogers; stepgrandchildren, Akela Brown, LaQuenthia Jones, Brittany Bell and Wayvalon Johnson; five siblings, Jo Evelyn Simon of Longview, Dr. Ellen Mayfield-Fleming and husband, Frank of Rochester Hills, Mich., Ruth D. Standifer of Midland, Helen T. Mayfield, Esquire, of Houston and Robert L.. Mayfield of Longview; and a host of relatives and friends. An Omega-Omega service will be held in Mrs. Rogers' honor at 5:30 p.m. this evening, May 18, 2007, at Stanmore Funeral Home of Longview.
