Woude, Jeannette Helen Vander A service to the glory of God and in celebration of the life of Jeannette Helen Vander Woude, 85, of Longview, Texas, will be 4 p.m. Monday, October 2, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church, Longview, Texas, with the Rev. Jonathan Jehorek officiating. Burial will be in Rosewood Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Mrs. Vander Woude died on September 30, 2006, at her residence after a long illness. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today, October 1, 2006. Jeannette was born to Bertram and Ebba Gustafson Uddenberg on February 5, 1921, in Tacoma, Washington. She spent her childhood in Gig Harbor, Washington, with four younger sisters and one brother, where she developed a love of the Puget Sound area and the sea. Jeannette received a liberal arts degree with a major in history and political science from the University of Washington in 1942. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta and the Women's University Club. Following graduation she was employed as a traffic clerk for the naval supply depot in Seattle. Jeannette enlisted in the Navy in June 1944, as a midshipman and attended officer candidate training in the WAVES at the Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. Jeannette was commissioned as an ensign and assigned to duty as assistant paymaster at Brooklyn Navy Yard. She subsequently attended specialized training at Radcliffe College and was assigned as assistant to the supply officer, Norfolk Naval Shipyard. She later became the chief disbursing officer at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and held the rank of lieutenant (j.g.) at the time she left active service on July 9, 1946. Jeannette met Jack Vander Woude while serving in the Navy and they were married in Gig Harbor, Washington, on July 27, 1946. Jeannette and Jack moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, where Jack resumed his employment with Tennessee Eastman Co. They began their family with the birth of their daughters, Jean in 1948, and Lois in 1950. In Kingsport, Jeannette was active as a volunteer in Girl Scouts and in their church. In 1951, the family moved to Longview, Texas, when Jack was transferred to assist in the design and construction of the Longview plant for Texas Eastman Co, a newly formed subsidiary of Eastman Kodak. Jeannette was involved as a leader in Camp Fire, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, a docent with the Longview Art Museum, a volunteer with the Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary for over ten years, an active member of PTA and a Sunday school teacher for many years in the children's and youth departments at First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in her church circle. She was a member and officer of the women's study club for many years and enjoyed preparing presentations for the club and participating in its activities. Jeannette enjoyed playing golf and was active in the Pinecrest Women's Golf Association and served as an officer of the association for many years. She also served as an officer of the East Texas Women's Golf Association. Jeannette was a director of Pinecrest Country Club. Jack and Jeannette enjoyed traveling throughout the world both before and after retirement and took many study abroad trips with groups from Texas Christian University and the University of Washington. Her mother, father and sister, Patricia, preceded her in death. Survivors are Jeannette's husband of 60 years, Jack C. Vander Woude; her daughters, Jean Vander Woude of Seoul, South Korea, and Lois Hollingsworth, and her husband, Bill Hollingsworth, of Fairview, Texas; two sons, Rick Vander Woude, and his wife, Jana Vander Woude, of Waco, Texas, and Bob Vander Woude, and his wife, Stalee Vander Woude, of Carmel, California; her grandchildren, Matt and Lauren Hollingsworth of Fairview, Texas, Jeff Vander Woude of College Station, Texas, Michael and Kevin Vander Woude of Waco, Texas, and Austin and Ashlyn Vander Woude of Carmel, California; three sisters, Lola Kooley of Gig Harbor, Washington, Shirley Knapp of Gig Harbor, Washington, and Rosalie King, and her husband, James King, of Nine Mile Falls, Washington; her brother, Bert Uddenberg Jr., and his wife, Kathy Uddenberg, of Gig Harbor, Washington; and 17 nieces and nephews. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Jeannette's dear friends Carlene Addie, Alice Gary and Linda Selph who shared Jeannette's journey with her. Also a special thanks to the staff of Life Care Hospice for the respect and kindness they offered in providing care.
