The Longview Daily News, Thurs., Feb. 8, 1940: Mrs. Susan Carolyn WHITTINGTON of route 3, Longview, was buried in Peatown cemetery Thursday after funeral services at 3 PM from the Peatown Christian Church. She died Wednesday. Mrs. Whittington was Sheriff Will Hays’ mother-in-law. Mrs. Whittington was 78. She was born in Kaufmann county and moved to Gregg county with her family when she was a young girl. She married the late R. J. Whittington, well known farmer, who died 5 years ago. Surviving are 5 daughters, Mrs. J.M. Owings, Mrs. Will Hays, Mrs. Houston Harper and Miss Margie Whittington, all of Longview, and Mrs. R.T. Ballenger of Henderson; six sons, G.B., Herbert, R.J., E.B., and Levy all of Longview; and Lawrence of Vicksburg, Miss.; 3 sisters, Mrs. L.D. Oden of Longview, Mrs. Nellie McGaffey of Fresno, Calif., and Miss Vida Holt of Overton; a brother, L.D. Wooten of Longview; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
