Bears' Football - 1936

Summary of Bears' Season

The Gladewater Bears went into their Fall training the last week in August, in preparation for their first game with the North Dallas Bulldogs on September 21.

The Bears were lacking in material and experience, but with hard work and many sacrifices the Bul;ldogs found the Bears ready for "that Said Practice Game".  The game was hard fought throughout and every boy did his part.
Score Gladewater 6 - North Dallas 0

The coaches found many weak parts in the Bears' line and began trying to mold the boys in shape for the game with Mineola, but Mineola was stong and caught the Bears a bit off.

Then came Texarkana, the first conference game of the season, and the Bears remembering their defeat of the previous season, settled down to down the Tigers by a tunr of 16 - 0.  The work of Pyeatt, at guard, Ruth at center, and Jones and Green in the backfield stood out for the Bears.  The confidence the Bears gained in the game with Texarkana enabled them to sail through an easy victory over the Gilmer Buckeyes by the score of 23 - 0.

The second conference game was with the Mavericks of Marshall and they, too, were fighting a revengeful group of Bears, in the Bears' own back yard.  Thus after the dust had settled on the score board at the East end of the stadium, all the home town fans could see was Gladewater 35 - Marshall 0.

The Bears at this stage had just started, for each victory meant more and more to each member of the squad and they realized it the following week in preparation for the big "Game with the Tyler Lions" at the cave of the Lions in Tyler.  On the night of October 23, a big gust of wind came out of the North East which carried the Gladewater fans as well as the  Football boys to the cave of the Lions.  There, after some forty-eight minutes of fierce fighting between eleven Lions and eleven Bears, with the same fierceness as the wind which swept the fans from Gladewater, completely conquered a rearing band of Lions, that seemed headed for a State Crown.  The score Gladewater 6 - Tyler 0, does not begin to relate the happenings of tht game.  Then came the Woodchucks from Winnsboro to meet a bruised band of Bears who had gone too far to stand a defeat.  The score was Gladewater 27 - Winnsboro 6.

After the Winnsboro game the Bears had a few days of rest before they encountered the Bulldogs of Kilgore in the heart of the field of flowing gold.  There in Novermber 11, on a heavy field due to several days of rain, the Bears battled the Bulldogs into submission and came home with the big holiday game in the bag.  The game was slow in the eyes of the fans, but with Jones and Green bagging a few points occasionally the socre was 34 to 6 as the game ended.

With about ten days before the Lobo encounter, the Bears really got down to work for which looked like the only obstacle between them and teh Districk Title.  The Bears were likewise preparing for a crowd on the afternoon of November 22, and a large crowd there was.  As time grew nearer and nearer for the big game with the Longview Loboes, there were no seats to be had and those coming last draped the fence that surrounds the field.  The game was on at 2:30 p.m. and at the mid-way point the Loboes were leading the morally weakened Bears by three points.  Then with renewed hopes of a District Title, the Bears came out for the second half and quickly pushed over a touchdown that removed all hope for a Lobo victory.

The Thanksgiving Game was scheduled with Sulphur Springs, the last conference game of the season, but with technicalities ruling under the Interscholastic League Association, there was no goal for the Bears to fight for as they had forfeited all rights to the League as contenders for the District Title.  Morally whipped the Bears fought the Wildcats from Sulphur Springs off their feet, scoring 23 first downs to the Wilcats 3.  However the game was a scoreless tie, and the disheartened Bears checked their uniforms away for another year.  Let's hope for no interruptions in '36.
