Jan Craven's Scrapbook of Harrison County Marriages and Deaths - 1870 to 1901

Frances Estelle Chappell Hill and Lucretia Davenport Hill were sisters who moved to Harrison Co. Texas as children around 1856. They were born in Newberry, Newberry County, South Carolina, the children of Amie Wallace Davenport and Thomas Chappell Hill in 1849 and 1853 respectively. Of 15 children born to Amie and Thomas only 7 survived to adulthood. These two ladies never married and thus called themselves "unclaimed blessings". They lived in Waskom and then after the War Between the States claimed the life of their father, the family moved into Marshall. They bought the house, in Marshall which had served as the Confederate Capitol of Missouri, and lived there until they died in the 1930's. Between around 1870 and 1900, they clipped articles from newspapers telling of events relating to the lives of their friends and relatives who lived in the east Texas area and pasted them in an old book, preserving them for our enjoyment! The house was on S. Bolivar, and the governor's mansion was across the street.

This is an example of one of the newspaper clippings:
In this city on Wednesday evening in the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Conway, in this city, by the Rev. W. G. Lancaster, Mr. J. B. Carter, of Tyler, and Miss Bettie B. Conway, of this city.
The attendants were Mr. Willie Conway and Miss Maggie Whaley and Mr. George Leachman and Miss Cellie Lancaster, all of Marshall. The bride and bridemaids were all very tastefully and handsomely dressed and all looked lovely. The bridegroom and bridemen were all showed off remarkably well. The ceremony was performed in the presence of quite a number of relatives and friends. Shortly after the usual congratulations, the dining room doors were thrown open, and all present partook of the elegantly prepared eatables.
After music and pleasant conversation, those assembled dispersed at 1 o'clock, when the happy couple, accompanied by the attendants were driven to the depot and took the train for Tyler, Mr. Carter's home. The presents were handsome and appropriate.
We thought to ourself when we heard Dr. Lancaster performing the impressive ceremony, that blended the names and lives of the young couple into one, how beautiful it is for two young lovers of congeniality of mind and disposition to join hands and hearts and go through the world as man and wife. We thought of Dr. Franklin's comparing those who marry early to two young trees joined together by the hand of the gardener.

"Trunk knit with trunk, and branch with branch entwined,
Advancing still more closely they are joined;
At length, full grown no difference we see,
But 'stead of two, behold a single tree!"

We wish for our young friends the sweetest and most enduring friends of conjugal life.
