Among the thousands of noble sons of the South who have laid their lives upon the 
alter of their country, none deserves a more honorable notice than Rhodes Stephens 
of Marshall, Tx. In Apr 1861 he left his native state as a volunteer in Capt. Bass` 
Company. He was with the First Tx. Regt. in all of the hard fought battles of Va. 
until the second great Battle of Manassas in which he fell a martyr.
