Introduction

To determine the presence of unmarked graves, the grave dowsing method was used. If a body was present, the rods crossed in front of the person when she was over the grave. To determine the approximate age of the person buried in an unmarked grave, we began at the foot/head of the grave and walked the length. The rods crossed at the feet/head and remained crossed until we reached the other end (feet/head). By counting steps, we figured the age by the following rules:
1-2 steps indicates an infant
2-3 steps indicates a toddler
3-4 steps indicates a child
5 steps indicates an adolescent or short adult
6 steps indicates an adult
7 steps indicates a tall adult

History

This cemetery was begun as a private burial ground in approximately 1879 on land that, at the time, was a part of the farm of George Henry Dugan and Callie Briscoe Dugan, both of whom are interred here. Burials here include family members of some of the early settlers in this region of Texas. Care for the cemetery is provided by the Caddo I.O.O.F. Cemetery Association through a grant made by Clyde Murray Clark.

The marker inside cemetery grounds indicates the cemetery is known as the Dugan Cemetery. The cemetery sign posted on FM 6 indicates the cemetery is known as the Duncan Cemetery.

Physical description

The cemetery is fenced in a private pasture. To the east of the cemetery is a large tank for watering stock. Graves were found to exist on the perimeter of the cemetery, i.e. in the fence line. The rows run in a north-south direction. Between the rows marked with tombstones and concrete blocks are several rows of unmarked graves, burials of which are those of infants and/or small children. There are two large markers, which have burial information for two persons on each side of the marker. These persons are found to be buried side-by-side or foot-to-head.

The cemetery was transcribed in rows, beginning in the northwest corner of the fenced area and moving in a northeast direction to the opposite fence. Rows were read, beginning at the northwest side of the cemetery and moving to the southeast side of the cemetery.
