Judges Hear Their Discovery

Among the audience at the Mack Harrell concert for Community Course Series on Tuesday evening at McFarlin Auditorium were the judges who selected Mr. Harrell as winner of a musical scholarship contest a few years ago. These included Mrs. H. E. Jones of Celeste, Texas, past district president and contest chairman of the third district of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs, the group which sponsored the contest; Mrs. Juanita Blair Price, Dean Paul van Katwijk of the SMU School of Music, Curt Beck, Mrs. W. W. Hawkins, and Mrs. Earl D. Behrends. Although Mr. Harrell won the contest as a violinist, it was this scholarship that took him to Philadelphia and eventually led to his training of the baritone voice that landed him in the Metropolitan Opera Company. Also in the same part at the Harrell contest were Mrs. Tommy Harris and Mrs. R. C. Denny, both of Celeste, Mr. Harrell's birthplace, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gamble.
