DAN TURNEY

Dan Turney of Celeste Dies
Prominent Celeste Business Man Dies at Home in that City on Monday

Dan Turney, aged 63, prominent Celeste businessman, died at his home in that city at 1:10 o'clock Monday, January 2, 1928.

Mr. Turney was found by his wife. Medical aid was summoned and every effort put forward for his recovery.

Mr. Turney was born in Illinois and came to Texas and settled near Celeste many years ago and has since resided in that community. For several years, he has been connected with the Henslee Hardware Company and one of the most prominent businessmen of his community.

Deceased is survived by his widow, Nannie Della Ewing Turney; one son, Dan A. Turney, Jr., of Dallas; one sister, Mrs. John McGuire, of Celeste; one brother, Ed Turney, of Wilson, Oklahoma, and two half-brothers, also of Oklahoma.

He was a devout Christian being an active member of the Church of Celeste, serving as an elder of that body for several years.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 PM, January 3, 1928, from the Christian Church at Celeste. Services were conducted by the pastor of the Church of Christ of that city and assisted by the Rev. J. B. Gober of this city.

The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of their many friends during this hour of sadness.

(Tuesday, January 3, 1928, The Greenville Morning Herald)

D. A. Turney married Nannie Della Ewing on August 14, 1904. She was born on January 3, 1876, and died January 3, 1965.

Mrs. John McGuire was born about 1867 in Illinois. So were her parents. John McGuire was a cabinet maker. In 1910, they lived on Second Street. I believe I have Jessie O, Eula, and Ethel with them. The Turneys lived on Cockrell Street in 1910.

I have Anna L. Turney, 4, born in Illinois to Dr. George W. and Mary West Cates Turney on the August 15, 1860 census. She could have been born in 1856. She is the A. L. Turney who married the J. A. McGuire in Hunt County on October 30, 1884.
