COMMERCE — John G. Oliva, 80, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Commerce, died Sept. 23, 2006, at the Myers Nursing Home in Kansas City, Mo. He was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Commerce, son of Juan “Shorty” and Maria de la Luz (Guerro) Oliva. John received his undergraduate degree at East Texas State Teacher’s College in Commerce and his master’s degree from the University of Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico. He married Erma Zamora of Westfield; and they lived in Commerce, Fort Worth, and El Paso prior to moving to Lexington, Mo., in 1962. He was a school teacher for more than 30 years in Texas, Nebraska and Missouri prior to devoting himself full-time to his real estate business in Lexington. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Oliva was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lexington, Mo. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Simon Oliva and Raphael Oliva; and a great-grandson, Holden Todd.

John is survived by a sister, Rita Villalpando of San Antonio; children Denis Oliva of Lexington, Mo., Simone Oliva Burns of Melbourne, Fla., John Oliva of Kansas City, Mo., Delia Oliva Davis and husband Ken of Kansas City, Mo., Ralph Oliva of Tampa, Fla., and Michele Oliva Borgman and husband Don of Wellington, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A graveside service is scheduled at 10 a.m. today at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce with Father George P. Monaghan officiating. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home of Commerce is in charge of arrangements.
