Inez Shields
GREENVILLE — Inez Green Shields was born Sept. 10, 1911. She was 101 years, 6 months old at the time of her death. She died at home after a hospital stay. Inez was born in Hunt County between Celeste and Wolfe City to Marion and Johnnie Green on a family farm. She has a sister, Madalan Smith who is deceased and a brother, Marvin “Buddy” Green who was killed in a car accident not far from Inez and Weldon’s home.
Inez was married to Weldon Shields, the dad of Marleta Shields Crim, a funeral director, grocery store owner, car dealer and author. Inez left the farm before marriage to work in a hardware store as salesperson for Greenhaugh and Little. She was a homemaker and mom of Marleta Shields Crim. She worked with Weldon at the Weldon Shields Motor Company, “Where Better Cars Get Together”, as secretary and salesperson. She was a true advocate for Greenville. Inez and Weldon attended and worked as volunteers at Wesley United Methodist Church. They worked as sponsors of the youth group. Inez worked as Children’s Director, and Weldon was chairperson of the Finance committee and on the Administrative Board.
Inez loved the farm in which she grew up. She enjoyed Wesley UMC. She and Weldon did so much together along with their daughter, Marleta and “son” David carrying this over with their grandchildren. Inez had many illnesses and surgeries for many years of which weren’t known by most people. She was very tenacious and a hard worker. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and stitchery. Inez loved her family. She will be missed and was loved very much by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Buddy and his wife, Maxine, and sister, Madalan and her husband, Dennis Smith.
Inez passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, at her home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Wisdom and Rev. Mike Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Tidwell Cemetery. She leaves behind her daughter, Marleta and son-in-law, David Crim (who was like their son) of Arlington; two grandchildren Meredith Scruggs and her husband, Gavin of Flower Mound and Chad Crim and his wife, Julia of Havelock North, New Zealand, who will be moving back to Texas soon. Inez knew about the move and was thrilled. Inez has six great-grandchildren Sierra and Zander Scruggs, Bray, Eliana, Truett (born in Guatemala) and Erickson Crim (the newest member of the family who was born in New Zealand). Also surviving are nephews Dennis Smith, Jr. and wife, Jerry, and their two children Brandi and Shawn and spouses plus two great-great-nieces, Avery and Hannah and nephew Bud Green and wife, Jeannie of Hunt County and their children Calvin, Jeffrey, Michael, and Robert plus spouses and great-great-niece Anna Belle and great-great-nephew Henry.
We thank the many ladies who helped with Mother during her last days. They helped a long time, and we all became friends. We thank Dianne Price, Myrtle Wilson, Minnie Wilson, Helen Davis, Cathy Holicky, and others in previous years during her illness. Also, American Hospice was a great help. Thank you Sarah, Linda, Candy, Tammy, Melissa, Peaches, and others.
