Sample Smith

Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM, Friday, May 6, 1955, for Sample Smith, 81, in the Leonard Methodist Church with the pastor, the Rev. A.R. Morgan, officiating. He was assisted by Doyle Wilson, a longtime friend of the family.

Burial was in the Leonard Cemetery with Pat Wilson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Louisiana, Mr.Smith was born on January 14, 1874. He was married on October 4, 1896, to Miss Lou Tefteller. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer. He had been ill for the past five months and died at his home in Leonard, on Thursday, May 5, 1955. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

On October 4, 1955, he and Mrs. Smith would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. This was the first death in the immediate family.

Survivors include his widow; five daughters, Mrs. Wylie Roberts and Mrs. Bill Thornton of Dallas, Mrs. Noel Owens of Leonard, Mrs. Charles Dans of Hawthorne, California, and Mrs. Paul Hazal of Celeste; four sons, Earl Smith of Lockney, Ray Smith and Iley Smith of Dallas, and Glenn Smith of Bailey; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Jon Dees of Olney and Mrs. Chester Jones of Edhube; three brothers, Collie Smith of Bailey, Tom Smith of Floydada, and Clarence (?) Smith of Trenton, New Jersey.

Pallbearers were Larry Clotfelter, L. M. LaRoe, Wiley Roberts, Noel Owens, Paul Hazal, and Bill Thornton.
