Thomas Tarpley West

Thomas Tarpley West, 87, died June 19, 2006, in Harlingen, Texas, at Valley Baptist Hospital. He was born on January 5, 1919, in Fannin County, Texas, to William H. West and Annie Mae Hamic West. He served throughout World War II in the Navy and Fleet Marines. Afterwards, he operated his own grocery store in Celeste, where he also served as mayor for two terms. He sold his store and returned to college, graduating with two degrees.

Tom was well-known for his career as teacher and coach for sixteen years, and for serving as high school principal for seventeen years. A faithful member of the Raymondville Church of Christ for many years, he was always ready to serve his church, school, and community in every way possible.

He is survived by his son, Tom West, Jr., and his wife, Patsy West; grandsons, Will West and Tom West III and his wife, Lisa West; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian West.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to Sunny Glen Orphan's Home, PO Box 1371, San Benito, Texas 78586-1371.

Memorial services will be held at the Leonard Church of Christ on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at 2:00 PM with Charles Wrenn officiating.

Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Leonard has charge of the memorial service.
