Oliver Jackson Christy
Born: April 9, 1841, in Clay County, Indiana
Parents: William MacFarland Christy Jr. and his wife, Margarett M. Rivers,
moved from Clay County, Indiana, sometime
after 1840, to Missouri. They started the long trek
to Texas six weeks after Boon Christy was born
March 29, 1847, arriving in Hunt County, Texas, near Cash,
three months later in mid-August 1847.
Died: Feb. 26, 1877, near Cash, Texas
Buried: The old Hart Cemetery, located in the Weiland Community.
This is the old cemetery abandoned in the late 1800s located on the north part of the Melvin "Doc" Graham farm, in a cedar grove.
There also is a much larger Hart Cemetery near Highway 34. There are only 5 marked graves left in the old Hart Cemetery. The grave is marked "SGT Oliver J. Christy, Co. D, 22 Calvary C.S.A." They lived with their family in the Cash community, Hunt Co., Texas.

After O.J. Christy's death in 1877, Sarah remarried twice, to a W. Cotterell (Cotrell) March 19,
1879, and later to Reuben Odell, Aug. 10, 1884.
Oliver Jackson Christy, Confederate soldier, taken about 1862
Oliver Jackson Christy's military service (confirmed by the accompanying muster rolls, provided by the National Archives):
Enlisted in Confederate service Dec. 15, 1861, at Greenville, Texas; mustered in at Fort
Washita, Indian Territory, on Jan. 31, 1862, at age 20 years.
He was placed in Co. D, 22nd Texas Cavalry (later dismounted and used as infantry), then transferred to Co. I, 22nd Texas Cavalry (dismounted) for the duration of the war. He initially served as a private, later promoted to 3rd Sergeant.
His occupation was listed as "farmer," he had light-colored hair, grey eyes and dark complexion, and brought his own horse and rigging. His muster sheets noted he was transferred from Co. D to Co. I Jan. 31, 1862, by order of Col. Robert H. Taylor.
He fought in actions at Sugar Creek, Ark. and Cross Hollows, Ark. Oct. 17-18, 1862; Battle of Prairie Grove, Ark., Dec. 7, 1862; operations in western Louisiana and the Teche country April 9 to May 4, 1863; actions at Jackson's Cross Roads, LaFourche Crossing, Lake Providence and Cox's Plantation, all in Louisiana; and participated in the Red River Campaign of 1864. His regiment, part of Gen. Camille de Polignac's Confederate Brigade of Mouton's Division, spearheaded the main attack on the Union positions at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads (Mansfield), Louisiana, April 8, 1864. He also fought at the Battle of Pleasant Hill, La., at Alexandria, La., and operations against the retreat from Alexandria to Morganza, La., May 13-20, 1864; skirmish at Indian Village, La., Aug. 6, 1864, and disbanded with his regiment en route to the Trans-Mississippi troops surrender in June 1865.

--William M. Christy died at age 52 in Dec. 1859 (Mortality schedule, 1860 Hunt Co. census).
--William's wife, Margaret Christy, is listed in the 1860 Hunt Co. Census as 46 years old, with
children Mariah; Nancy; Oliver J.; Boon and Samanthy Christy.
--My great-grandfather, Jim Christy, son of Oliver Jackson and Sarah Christy, was born Dec. 31,
1875, in Cash, Hunt Co., Texas. He served as a Texas Ranger from 1894 to 1897 under
Capt. W.J. "Bill" McDonald. He left the Rangers upon his marriage Sept. 19, 1897, to Annie
Elizabeth (Cross) Nokes. (confirmed in an old letter from Jim Christy to Annie Nokes dated
Sept. 8, 1897, mailed from San Saba, Texas.)
--Jacob Dunn married Charity Elizabeth Allen May 11, 1848 (by County Judge Alexander Smith, listed in the "Earliest Marriages of Hunt County, 1847-1851, Deed Book A."
Jacob Dunn is listed on the 1846 Tax Rolls of Hunt Co., Texas.
