Valentine is the only incorporated town in Jeff Davis County. Fort Davis is the county seat. (G) is a ghost town and (U) is unincorporated. Most of the ghost towns were supply depots for either the railroad or the ranches. Fort Davis was originally established in 1854 as a place of respite on the San Antonio-El Paso del Norte Trail. It was named for Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War to President Franklin Pierce.
