MAGERS, HEINRICH II

Heinrich Magers, Jr. became the head of the family at a very early age when his father was killed by Indians in 1860. The family had arrived from Hehlesdurf, Hanover, Germany just four years earlier in 1856. Henry was born February 15, 1843 in Germany making him only a teen-ager of seventeen when he took over the family business of freight and mail. In February 1864 Henry enlisted in the Union Army joining Company A, 1st Texas Cavalry at Brownsville. The following year on October 31, 1865 he was mustered out at San Antonio. It was several years before Henry married Louisa Zimmermann on September 26, 1869 in Kendall County, Texas. Louisa had also been an immigrant, born in Magdaburg, Prussia on January 2, 1848. She came to America with the Langbein family, later sending for her parents and sisters. The Zimmermann family settled in Sisterdale. Henry purchased property fronting the Guadalupe River and adjacent to his brother William Magers. In 1896 the family moved to Rocksprings, Edwards County, Texas where Henry purchased the water works and also ranched. They sold out around 1900 and moved to Uvalde County, where they purchased approximately 5000 acres in the Frio Canyon between Rio Frio and Con Can. In 1904 they divided their property among their children and retired to live in San Antonio. Henry died on March 9, 1911 and his wife, Louisa, died March 11, 1924 both in San Antonio. There were seven children from this union.
