THEIS, (HENRY) HOUSE
402 E. San Antonio St.,Boerne
DESCRIPTION: One and 1/2 story rock house with stucco-bungalow type; porch with rock posts; upper story with outside steps to entrance.
HISTORY: Henry Theis, former Kendall County Judge and school
teacher, built the house. Henry had employed his two brothers-in-law to build
this rock home large enough for him to live here with his family and teach in
the large front. His son, Adolph P. Theis was born in this house during the time
his father was teaching school here. As the family increased Henry sold this
rock house to Fritz Gerfers. Mr. Gerfers never lived in it but used it as a rent
house. The Ober family lived here several years while Mr. Ober was the depot
agent.
The Ober's later moved to San Antonio and this house was for sale.
Adolph Theis purchased the house, saying, " I was born in this house and I hope
to die in it." He did in the year 1923. Adolph Theis and his wife, Jessie
McCrocklin, lived in the house many years. Miss Jessie taught school. She told
of her husband's accident, "On Theissen Street Kutzer had a feed store and
Reinhard had a cotton gin. In this gin Adolph Theis was accidentally pressed and
paralyzed from the waist down."
After Miss Jessie died her son, Jessie
Theis, was the heir. The house has been rented to a number of businesses. It was
an art studio, and a doctor's office to name a few. [After selling this house to
Gerfers, Henry Theis built across the street. The house had eleven rooms. It was
later torn down and a church was built. That church building is now Vaughn's
Funeral Home]
