JOHN EDMOND DICKEY

J. E. Dickey, 87, was born December 20, 1913, in Centerville, Texas, to parents, John Edmond and Addie Lou Spiller Dickey. He went to be with the Lord October 27, 2001 in Centerville. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorene Barnes Dickey in 1976.

Mr. Dickey was a member of First Baptist Church of Centerville for 61 years. During those years, he was a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the Board of Trustees, as well as serving on various committees of the church. He was a charter member of the Centerville Lions Club, holding various offices and serving on several committees. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce of Centerville.

During World War II, Mr. Dickey served on War Effort committees, and was publicity committee chairman of the Red Cross. He participated on War Bond drives and served on the Ration Board. He was honored with the John Campanious Holm award in 1975 for serving as a weather observer for the United States Department of Commerce for 35 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Dickey were publishers and editors of the Leon County News from February 1, 1949 until their retirement on January 1, 1976.

J. E. was the eleventh and last child born to John and Addie Lou Dickey. He was preceded in death by his four sisters, Vera Dial Campbell, Pearl Powell Rawls, Nettie Leon Perry and Willie Dickey; and by six brothers, Harvey Leander, Robert Edgar, Demeratus Marvin, Ira Augustus, Luther Matthew, and William Byron.

He is survived by son, Jay and wife Tincy Campbell of Texas City, Texas; grandchildren Dickey and wife Lisa Campbell, and Melissa and husband Mike Tucker, all of Texas City; great-grandchildren Jay Eric Campbell, Jonathan Campbell and Weston Tucker, also of Texas City.

J. E. is also survived by dear friends, Clarence and Bernice Douthitt of Centerville, Texas; many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much; and the friends he made in Texas City.

J. D. Dickey's greatest legacy left to his family and friends was his steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and his commitment to the Word of God.

Funeral services for J. E. Dickey are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Centerville. The Rev. Larry Ashley, pastor of the church, will officiate and interment will follow in the Centerville Cemetery. Walters Funeral Home in Centerville is in charge of arrangements. Visitation is from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Monday morning at Fist Baptist Church.
