CUBA

"Eight or ten miles east of the Nueces River was a community of farmers and ranchers.  It covered about all of the county that eventually became known as Upper Lapara, Belle Kidd and part of Mahala.  Prior to 1898 it is not known what this town was called, but when the Spanish American War was fought it got the name of Cuba."

"Cuba supplied the county with one of its 'firsts' -- that is, baseball was first introduced into Live Oak County in Cuba, with Alex McKinney and R.W. Burks as organizers.  The 'Cuba Nine' were known in this and adjoining counties."
