The Galveston Daily News (Galveston, Texas)
27 September 1865, Wed
Murder of U.S. Soldiers.-- The Jefferson (Texas) Jimplecute of
the 19th, informs us that two United States soldiers were killed
on the Friday evening previous in the neighborhood of Hickory
Hill, Davis County, about sixteen miles northwest of Jefferson. A
company of cavalry returning from Paris, Lamar county, lost one
of their number by sickness near Hickory Hill, and had detailed
four men to attend to the burial. While in this act they were
attacked by a party of men, and two of them killed, while several
balls passed through the hat of another, who escaped only by
feigning death. It is supposed that the foul and cowardly deed
was perpetrated by men who had followed some distance for the
purpose.
The murderers were generally believed to be Missourians.
An indignation meeting was held in Jefferson on the receipt of
the news. It was more largely attended than any public meeting
for four years past; and adopted resolutions condemning the deed
and pledging each member of the assemblage to give influence and
assistance in bringing the assassins to punishment. We heartily
join the meeting and the papaer quoted in reprobation of the deed,
and in the hope that the murderers may be speedily caught and
punished.
