The Times-Picayune (New
Orleans, Louisiana) 16 January 1868
A beef packery has gone into operation near Jefferson. The
military authorities and citizens of Jefferson are on the best of
terms. There was a very pleasant gathering at the Haywood House,
in that city, recently-- supper, etc. -- gotton up, says the
Jimplecute, by a number of citizens to express to Lieut. Jno. S.
Allanson, their regrets at his departure and appreciation of his
course as a soldier and gentleman, and also to welcome in our
midst Brevet Brig. Gen. N.B. McLaughlen, as a defender of law and
order.
The new wagon road from Jefferson, intercepting the main Tyler
road at Garpville is about completed.
