Murder and Robbery at Marshall, Texas--
We find the following in the Jefferson (Texas) Jimplecute, of
April 7:
We have just learned this (Monday) morning, by a friend direct
from Marshall, of the murder of Col. W.R.D. Ward, an old and
respected citizen of Marshall. Also the wounding, perhaps
fatally, of Major Ely, of Shreveport. They were both robbed of
large amounts of money. It is said that the murder and robbery
was committed by Harris, Robinson, and a Mr. Poe. The murderers
made their escape, but are being closely pursued by Capt. Boggess
and Mr. Miller, both brave and feareless men, and in all
probability they will be captured. The murderers crossed at
Camp's Ferry, on the morning of the 5th, and their pursuers were
only three hours behind them. Excitement about the affair is very
high in Marshall, and it is common talk on the streets that other
parties, who are well known around Marshall, are implicated in
this horrid affair.
