James Calloway Killed Instantly Thursday
James Calloway, the son of James M. Calloway was instantly killed in front of his father's gate about 4 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Calloway was a native of Harrison County, where he had lived most of his life. His wife was a native of Louisiana. He was a middle-aged man and is survived by his wife and five children, the oldest being about 18, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James M. Calloway also three sisters, Mrs. W. P. Green of Grover, Mrs. Author Massie of Harleton and Mrs. McClennan of Gilmer and three brothers, Howell, a mail carrier in Marshall, Walter and W. E. from the Nesbitt neighborhood and numerous other relatives. The funeral was at Nesbitt at 2 p.m. Friday.

Old Jefferson Citizen Laid To Rest Friday
Martin V. Camp, 94, a citizen of Jefferson for several years and one of the few Civil War veterans living here, died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Al E. Mitcham on Polk Street last Thursday afternoon after an illness of a few weeks. The deceased was formerly a member of the 67th Infantry of Indiana and he attended the Old Settlers Reunion at Gettysburg last year. A daughter, Mrs. Mable CAMP May of Kildare, a son J. L. Camp of Tivolle, Texas, 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, survives Mr. Camp Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Kildare on Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock with the Rev. Clyde Thomas of Atlanta officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. A. Barron of Linden. Interment was made in the family lot in the Kildare Cemetery.

Infant Dies
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Campbell of Longview, died at Longview and was brought to Jefferson Wednesday and laid to rest o the family plot.

Campbell, Mrs. Maud

Mrs. Campbell Dies
Mrs. Maud Campbell, daughter of L. M. and Maggie Hale was born November 1878 and died 16 July 1916 and was laid to rest July 17th at the Simmons graveyard in the presence of a host of friends. Brother John A. Shaddix officiated. She was married to Bon Campbell in 1894 and to this union was born eight children, two having gone on before to await the coming. She leaves a husband, six children and a father to mourn her loss.

Mrs. Caples Dies In Shreveport
Mrs. Mary Caples died at the home of her son-in-law, Will Wythe at Shreveport, July 8th, she was 69 years old. She was a member of the Methodist Church and for the past 35 years a resident of Marion County. She leaves two married daughters and two married sons. The remains were brought to Kellyville for interment, with the services conducted by the Rev. Mathison.

Young Daughter Dies From Whooping Cough
Marie Louise Carlson, the four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Carlson died Monday at 5:30 p.m. from whooping cough and complications. The funeral was held from the residence on Austin Street at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. C. C. Huffmeister conducted the services.
Note: Mary Louise Carlson was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson. Only date is 2 December 1912.

JEFFERSON — Services for Bunnie Mae Carr, of Marshall, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Coverson Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lewis & Walker Funeral Home. Ms. Carr was born January 25, 1958, and died August 10, 2011. Visitation will be 1 p.m. today, August 19, 2011, at the funeral home. Mr. Carr Dies After Brief Illness
Mr. W. R. Carr, Sr. died after a brief illness at 11 a.m. Sunday morning, February 18th. Funeral services were conducted from his residence on South Alley Street at 10 a.m. Monday morning by the Rev. L. F. Brothers. he was buried in the old family burying ground at Kellyville. He was born 1846 in Mississippi, spent his childhood there. He enlisted in the Confederate army and later moved to Jefferson. He was engaged in the Mercantile business in Jefferson for twenty-five years. The children surviving him are Lee Carr of Rosewood, Texas, W. R. Carr, Jr. and Earnest Carr and step-son, C. R. Coleman, all of Jefferson, Mrs. Ida May Weeks of Onolask, Texas and his widow.

A. J. T. Carter Kills Himself
About noon on Monday, the 15th, Mr. A. J. T. "Jack" Carter, shot himself in the chest with a rifle at his home on the lake thirteen miles East of this city. Mr. Carter was engaged in farming and had resided at his home place over thirty years, he was a well-liked man. He was born and reared in Alabama. He was a member of the Dick Taylor Camp U.C.V. and Co. K 15th Texas Infantry, he was 78 years old. Mr. Carter leaves one daughter and two sons to mourn his death. The burial took place Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Old Taylor Cemetery.
Note: Andrew Jackson T. Carter 14 February 1829 - 15 April 1907. He married Mary A. C. Watson 17 April 1861 Kn/ch Ellis Asa, Anna Dora, Willie Augustus, Andrew Jackson, Florence Elizabeth, Nicholos M. and Mary Leona.
Carter, Nancy

Negro Woman Dead At Age 126
Nancy Carter, called Grannie, came from Africa in 1802, at about the age of 19. She was bought by a slave trader named C. Ferson, then sold to Absolam Carter, Sr. of Greenville, Alabama and at his death she was inherited by Absolam Carter, Jr. and brought to Cass County, Texas in 1854 and has remained here until her death, 11 November 1910, living to advanced age of 126 years. She has numbers of great, great-grandchildren by her youngest daughter, Julia Ann Allen, the only child that came with her toTexas.
Note: She is buried in the Pleasant Hill - Old Cemetery near Linden in Cass County by her daughter Julia Ann HORSLEY Allen

Mr. Castleberry Passed At Greenville
Robert E. L. Castleberry passed away at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was born in Jefferson, 18 December 1869 and came to Greenville sixteen years later and had been an employee of Katy all that time. He is survived by four sisters, Miss Georgia Castleberry of this city, Mrs. Collins of Cleburne, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Onstadt of Dallas, two nieces and a nephew, children of Mrs. Miller. Funeral services will be at the residence at 3112 West Henry Street, with services conducted by Rev. A. A. Duncan, assisted by Rev. W. E. Graham at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, with burial in East Mountain Cemetery in Greenville.

W. C. Cates Dies From Injuries
W. C. Cates, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Cates of this city, who was wounded Monday by an older brother, as the two were playing in the home with a shotgun, died at a Marshall Hospital at 1:45 Wednesday morning. The boy is survived by his parents; three brothers, Albert, Herbert, and George; two sisters, Margaret and Fay.
Funeral services will be held in Texarkana Thursday morning at 10 a.m. with interment in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Texarkana.

Major Cavan Dead
Major William J. Cavan died at 5 a.m. at his home on San Jacinto Street, he was 73 years old. The funeral will take place from the residence at 3 p.m today and proceed to the Greenwood Cemetery, Rev. Marion F. Ham, pastor of the First Unitarian Church, officiating. Mr. Cavan was born at Augusta, Georgia 27 October 1833, and with his father, David, he came to Texas in 1859 and settled near Marshall in Harrison County. During the Civil War he served as 1st Lt. in the Third Texas Cavalry in General Sul Rose's Brigade. In 1867 he married Miss Virginia Driskell of Tyler. To this union eight children were born, four sons and four daughters. William, David B., George P., Thomas P., Mrs. Paul Traylor and Miss Janie Cavan who reside here in Jefferson. He was residing in Dallas at the time of his death.

Mrs. Chambers Dies Suddenly
Mrs. Sallie Chambers died suddenly about 10 p.m. Saturday night, Dec 9th, after an illness of a few minutes at the home of her son, Dr. J. P. Chambers on Jefferson Avenue. She was visiting from Daingerfield. The remains were taken to Daingerfield Sunday for burial on Monday at 10 a.m. She is survived by ten children and 25 great-grandchildren.
Note: Sallie P. Chambers was born 21 August 1839 and is buried in the Daingerfield City Cemetery next to her husband, George C. Chambers. who preceded her in death in 1897.
Chaudron, Mrs. A. C.

Mrs. A. C. Chaudron Dies
Mrs. A. C. Chaudron died at the home of her sister, Mrs. M. O. Hicks, one mile south of this city at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, after an illness of several weeks. The death of Mrs Chaudron removes the last of a little family, who have passed away since the 5th of April, when Mr. Chaudron died suddenly from heart trouble, the little daughter, Frances died some two months ago. The deceased leaves a devoted sister and her daughters and sons. Mrs. Chaudron was a member of the R. E. Chapter, U.D.C. The funeral took place at the residence at 3:30 Thursday afternoon by Rev. H. J. Hayes with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery beside her husband and daughter.

Dr. A. J. Childress Dies Suddenly At Home Saturday Evening
Funeral services for Dr. Arthur J. Childress, 57, one of the best known physician and surgeon in East Texas, who passed away suddenly at his home here Saturday morning were held Monday afternoon at Ore City, his former home. Rev. D. Townes Windham, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiated with the Ashland Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member, in charge of the services at the grave. Dr. Childress was born in Upshur County, Texas August 20, 1883 and spent his boyhood in the vicinity of Ore City. Survivors are his father, W. S. Childress of Ore City, one son, N. L. Childress of Fort Worth and one grandson, N. L. Childress, Jr. of Fort Worth, also two brothers, Will of Ore City and R. C. of Wright City, two nieces, Miss Opal Childress of Ore City and Mrs. William Hervey of Daingerfield. Dr. Childress graduated from Missouri Medical School at Missouri University in 1915 and opened a practice in Arkansas later moving to Gilmer and was connected in business with his cousin, Dr. H. J. Childress. Before coming to Jefferson in 1932, he practiced in Ore City.

Widow of Alf Clark Dies
Alice, the wife of Alf Clark, colored, died Wednesday at their
home across the iron bridge, after a long illnes. The funeral
took place Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Union Baptist
church, with burial in new cemetery northwest of the city. Alice
Clark was a member of the Knights and Daughters of Tabor, also a
benevolent order and her funeral was largely attended by both
orders.

Death Of A Good Colored Woman
The Jimplecute regrets to learn of the death of Rev. C. C. Clark’s wife, which occurred suddenly at her home near Smithland in the 11th inst. Rev. Clark and wife had been married fifty-two years and had lived in Marion County all thirty years. She was the mother of fifteen children, had been a member of the Baptist Church for over forty years, and was one of the leading mission workers of the church in that section, being the first one in the County District Association. She was the president of the Belluvue Mission Society.
August 27, 1904 A Serious Charge
One day last week, Rev. C. C. Clark, colored, a veteran Baptist minister at Smithland was brought to Jefferson under the charge of causing the death of his wife who died rather sudden several weeks since. It is said he was whipping his daughter when his wife begged him to stop and he grabbed his wife and choked her from which, she died in a short time. He was given a hearing before Justice Todd and placed under a bond. It is serious charge, but some believe he will prove his innocence when the trial comes up.
Clopton, Dr. A. G.

Dr. Clopton Dies In Texarkana
After only a few days illness, Dr. Albert G. Clopton, a Confederate and Mexican War veteran, died yesterday morning at 11:46 at the home of Mr. and Mrs.. George Helme, he was 89 years old. The body of Dr. A. G. Clopton will be brought down from Texarkana, Friday morning on the Sunshine Special and the funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church at 9:30 a.m. after which the Jefferson Lodge # 38 A. F. and A. M. will take charge. He was born in Putnam County, Georgia near the town of Eatonton. He came to Texas when he was a young man and married Annie Matilda Henderson in Cass County.
Note: A double funeral was held at the Methodist Church Friday, June 23rd at 11 a.m. for Dr. and Mrs. Clopton. Mrs. Anne M. Clopton died Thursday night, they are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Cocke, Rev. Jospeh M.

Rev. Joseph M. Cocke
Rev. Jospeh M. Cocke, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of this city, passed away last week. He had been here for two years and was well-loved by all that knew him. The services were conducted by the Odd Fellows. Rev. Cocke was 52 years old and a native of Marion County, Texas. He was ordained to preach by the Marshall Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1890. He served as pastor in Henderson, Nacogdoches, McKinney, Texas and Ozark, Arkansas before coming to Vernon, Texas.

Miss Cole Passed Away
Miss Nellie Cole, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cole passed away on August 1st. She was buried in the Union Cemetery by her father, Sam.

Collamer, Mrs. D. N.

Died In Ft. Worth, Texas
Mrs. D. N. Collamer, wife of Mr. D. N. Collamer died in Ft. Worth, Monday, December 22nd and the body was brought to Jefferson on T & P train #6 Tuesday for burial. Her body was accompanied by her husband and son, Cad Collamer. Survivors included a sister, Eva HUMPHREY Newton of Waterloo, New Jersey, a son, D. O. Collamer of Los Angeles, California and her husband, D. N. Collamer and a son, C. H. Collamer, both of Ft. Worth. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family lived in Jefferson several years about twenty years ago. Mr. Collamer had a position with Clark and Boice Lumber Company and they had many friends here.

Columbus, Jesse

A Negro Boy Killed
On Wednesday afternoon, Ansel Lee Bass shot Jesse Columbus with a gun, the shot striking him in the bowel and from the effects he died several hours later. The shooting took place across the river and both were Negro boys about sixteen and eighteen years old. The boy who died was buried Thursday by the Benevolent Lodge of which he was a member.
Copeland, Mrs. Dottie

Mrs. Copeland Dies
News came Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. on the 23rd of February that the eldest daughter of J. M. Lemmon, had passed away. Her health had been failing for over a year. Dottie was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was the wife of W. Henry Copeland, one son, Marvin Lewis Copeland died in 1906 and a daughter, Lelia Dale Copeland survives her.
Note: Mrs. Dottie LEMMON Copeland was born 12 March 1882 and she was the daughter of James Madison and Vivian A. DUNCAN Lemmon.

JEFFERSON Graveside services for Margaret Nell Cothron, 56, of Jefferson were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 in Mims Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Taylor Duncan officiating. Ms. Cothron died Friday in Marshall. She was born July 29, 1946, in Marion County to Marie Humphrey Ledbetter and Willie Ledbetter.

Mrs. Elizabeth Craver Passes Away
Mrs. Elizabeth Craver died at the country home of her son, A. D. Craver, Jr. about nine miles southwest of this city, Sunday morning at 11 a.m., October 31, she was 70 years old. Mrs. Craver came to Texas with her husband, Mr. A. D. Craver from Georgia some thirty years ago. Her husband died twenty-eight years ago. Mrs. Craver is survived by her three sons, Louis, A. D. and Henry Craver. The burial took place at 11 a.m. Monday morning at the the Old Craver graveyard, the services were conducted by Rev. T. S. Bomar.

Crow, Mary

Miss Crow Dies Sunday
Miss Mary Crow, daughter of Mr. J. F. Crow died Sunday morning March 22nd after a lingering illness of many months. Survivors includes her father, a sister, Zadia Lou, and two brothers, Terry of Ennis and Louis of New York. The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. with the Rev. T. S. Bomar conducting the services. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery, next to her mother.

Death of Mrs. Crute
Mrs. Eugenia ECHOLS Crute, wife of R. L. Crute, died at her home in this city Wednesday, April 8th at 8:40 p.m. after an lingering illness of consumption. The deceased leaves a husband, mother, sister and brothers to mourn her loss. The funeral took place Friday evening at 3:00 o'clock.
Note: 1880 - 1908 Her husband Robert Lee Crute was born 1878 and died 1942. Both are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson.

Dr. Cunliff Dies At Coffeeville
Dr. J. H. Cunliff died Monday night at 12:30 at his home at Coffeeville, Upshur County, Texas. He was one of the Upshur County's leading physicians. He was buried at Gilmer, Texas Tuesday by Gilmer Chapter R. A. M.
Cunningham, Ella

Mrs. Ella Cunningham Buried At Buffalo
Mr. & Mrs. G. C. Cunningham were called to Palestine Sunday on account of the death of his step-mother, Mrs. Ella Cunningham, 78, who passed away at a hospital in that city at 1:45 p.m. Mrs. Cunningham was buried in the cemetery at Buffalo, her hometown at 2 p.m. Monday. Cruse Stark and J. C. Pugh attended the funeral.
