Jefferson, Tex., Feb. 8,--Boykin HALL, a highly respected old citizen of this place, died this morning of cancer of the throat. He has been sick for quite a long time and his death was no surprise to his many friends and relatives.

Hale, Luther M.

Mr. L. M. Hale Dies West of Jefferson

    Luther M. Hale died December 25, 1912 after a short illness at his home west of Jefferson. He was the son of L. M. Hale. A young wife of one year and a little babe survive him. The burial took place on the 26th.

Hart, Mrs. Jeff

Mrs. Hart After Short Illness

     Mrs. Mattie V. Hart died Sunday, after an illness of only twelve days. Mrs. Hart was the former Miss Burks and leaves to mourn her loss is a husband, four daughters and one son. The baby being only 18 months old. She is also survived by her mother, two sisters and one brother.

Note: She was born 27 February 1880 and died 28 January 1917. She was the wife of Jefferson James Hart. She was the daughter of Thomas Cooper and Lucy Alice HARRELL Burks.

Hasty, Mrs. John

Mrs. John Hasty Buried Saturday

     Funeral services for Mrs. J. Hasty, 58, who died at the family home near here Friday, were held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. Wallace Of Marshall and Rev. D. Townes Windham, pastor of the First Methodist Church of this city, conducted the services. Mrs. Hasty had been in ill health for some time. The deceased is survived by three children, Robert of Dallas, Ned of Jefferson and Mrs. A. J. Carrol of Longview, three step-children, Mrs. J. R. Harrison, J. K. and Bill Hasty, all of Shreveport. Three brothers Hill and Will Thomas of Jefferson and Lucian Thomas of Colorado and one sister, Mrs. Sallie Huckabee of Vivian, Louisiana and three grandchildren, also survive Mrs. Hasty. Interment was in Trinity Cemetery.

Hasty, Mrs. Martha A.

Mrs. Hasty Dies In Dallas

     Mr. George Liverman received word Sunday, October 26th that Mrs. Martha Hasty had died at her home in Dallas, she was 68 years old. Mrs. Hasty was the widow of the late J. J. Hasty, step-mother of Mrs. Liverman and J. E. and Union Hasty of Jefferson. Mrs. Hasty resided in Jefferson for many years before moving to Dallas. She is survived by four sons and three daughters, all living in Dallas, except Charlie Bradshaw who lives in Marshall. The funeral was held Monday afternoon with burial in Oak Cliff.

Henderson, Wesley Vaughn

Wesley Vaughn Henderson Dies From Accident

     Wesley Vaughn Henderson, 24, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Henderson, died in Magnolia, Arkansas from injured received in an automobile accident that afternoon. Funeral services were conducted from the family residence on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the Rev. W. S. Easterling, retired Methodist Minister of Atlanta, who had known the deceased since birth and was assisted by the Rev. D. Townes Windham, pastor of the First Methodist Church and Rev. Rides of Linden.

     The deceased was born in Linden, July 22, 1915 and came to Jefferson with his parents when he was twelve years old. He was a star football player on the Jefferson High School Bulldogs football team, when in high school.

     He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Henderson; three aunts, Mrs. S. E. Ellington, Mrs. C. E. Farmer both of Linden and Corinne Henderson of Texarkana and one uncle, Fredonia Lang of Beaumont. At the time of his death he was employed by S. E. I. Company, working out of El Dorado, Arkansas.

Note: Wesley Vaughn Henderson was the son of Albert Whitfield and Annie H. TAYLOR Henderson and he died 23 September 1939.

Miss Hengst Dies

     Miss Henrietta Hengst died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Leo Thompson, north of Jefferson and the burial took place Sunday, February 27th at 3 p.m. in the Oakwood cemetery with the Rev. H. J. Hayes conducting the services. Miss Etta was a granddaughter of Mrs. B. Witkern of this city. and she had been an invalid since she was four years old. She was a member of the Catholic Church

Hicks, B. E.

B. E. Hicks Dies Suddenly Here Thursday Morning

     B. E. Hicks, proprietor of the Hicks Grocery Company of this city, died suddenly at his home at 11 o’clock this [Thursday] morning. Mr. Hicks had been at the store but was not feeling well and had returned home about 10:30. The deceased came here over twenty years ago from Whitney and operated a variety store several years before entering the grocery business. He also served as mayor for four terms. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. Elmer L. Jones and two grandchildren survive him.

Hicks, Martha F. Claibaugh

Death of Mrs. Martha Frances Claibaugh Hicks

There are many Walhalla and Oconee friends of the family of the late John O. Hicks, formerly of this place, who will learn with deep regret of the death of Mrs. Hicks, which occurred at the home of her son Ernest Hicks, in Jefferson, Texas, on Saturday, the 13th instant. Mrs. Hicks resided in Walhalla with her husband and family for many years, moving to Texas several years ago. Mrs. Hicks was about 64 years age. Before her marriage to Mr. Hicks she was a Miss Claibaugh, her parents being natives of Virginia. The deceased had been in bad health for more than year. Mrs. Hicks was an exemplary woman a devout Christian, and the news of her death will bring deep sorrow to many here and elsewhere. The remains were interred by the side of her husband in Jefferson.

Hicks, Prof. John O.

Death of Prof. John O. Hicks
Former Resident of Walhalla Passed Away at Jefferson, Texas.

News was received in Walhalla last week announcing the death of Prof. John O. Hicks, which occurred at his home, a short distance from Jefferson, Texas, on Monday, December 7, 1908. Prof. Hicks had been in apparently good health having gained in strength since moving to Texas, and on Saturday had walked from Jefferson to his home some three miles out. Sunday morning, however, he arose feeling unwell, and on Monday while resting on his bed was taken suddenly ill with an attack of acute indigestion, from which he die before medical assistance could reach him. Prof. Hicks was 83 years of age, and a man of remarkable vitality. He was well known in Walhalla and throughout Oconee, having taught in the public schools of this county for some thirty years. In early life he was married to Miss Mattie Claibaugh, a native of Virginia, who survived by four daughters and two sons----Mrs. John Thompson, and Miss Mattie Hicks of Jefferson, Texas; Mrs. J.R. Kay, of Walhalla; Miss May Hicks, of Atlanta; John C. Hicks, of Spartanburg, S.C.; and Ernest Hicks, of Jefferson, Texas. Mr. Hicks was a native of North Carolina. The news of his death came as a surprise to many friends here, though, owing to his ripe age, his life could not have been expected to be greatly prolonged. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of many in their hour of sorrow.

Death of Lee High

     News was received Wednesday afternoon the 22th about 2 p.m. by D. L. Wright, of death of his uncle, Mr. Lee High at his home place 12 miles west of Jefferson. Mr. High is an old and prominent citizen of the county.

Note: 10 August 1842 - 22 May 1912 Buried in Wright Family Cemetery on private property near the Lake of the Pines. Actually name is Leonidas, he was born in Mississippi. He married Sally Frances Wright, 6 May 1841 - 15 January 1920.

Hileman, Harry

Death of Harry Hileman

     Harry Hileman died at his home in this city Saturday about 8 p.m. after a short attack of grippe.Mr. Hileman, about 69, was an old war veteran of the G. A. R. and had lived here for many years. He leaves a wife, two daughters and sons to mourn his death. The burial took place Monday afternoon at 4 p.m.

 Hillier, Mrs. J. M.

Mrs. Hillier Dies After Second Operation

     Mrs. J. M. Hillier, wife of Mr. Hillier, manager of Clark and Boice Lumber Company plant near Jefferson was called to Bearden, Arkansas last Friday by the dangerous illness of his wife, who was there with her parents. Mrs. Hillier died Sunday night, May 6th from the second operation in several months for appendicitis. She is survived by her husband and two little girls.

     JEFFERSON — Services for Marie Carter Hobbs, 85, of Jefferson are set for 10 a.m. today at Haggard-Heaster Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Rust officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery in Linden. Mrs. Hobbs, a member of Hall Baptist Church and a nursing home volunteer, died Monday. She was born Jan. 24, 1917, in Horatio, Ark.

Hoffmeister, Mrs. Edith

Mrs. Hoffmeister Dies After Short Illness

     Mrs. Edith Hoffmeister, the wife of the Rev. C. C. Hoffmeister, pastor of the Presbyterian Church passed away Sunday the 15th after an illness of about ten days. She is survived by her husband, and ten children, Carroll of Marshall, Warren of Dallas, Waller of Nacogdoches, Frank of Texarkana, and Charlie of Pittsburg; three little daughters and two sons at home. The Rev. Craig Johnson of Nacogdoches conducted the services, he was assisted by Rev. H. T. Perritte of the Methodist Church. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Note: Edith T. Hoffmeister was born 11 December 1863, she is buried beside her son, John H. Hoffmeister.

Hoffmeister, Warren Elsworth

Former Citizen Buried Sunday

     Funeral services for Warren Elsworth Hoffmeister, 51, a veteran employee of the General Electric Corporation in Dallas were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the George W. Brewer Funeral Chapel. Mr. Hoffmeister died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday at his home 6133 Prospect in Dallas after a heart attack. Mr. Hoffmeister was born in Axtel, Kansas 20 January 1889.   He lived for a short while in Minnesota before he moved to Texas, first to Wills Point, then Jefferson. A bank, the post office and the Railway Express Company employed him, while he lived here. Survivors include his wife and three children, Mrs. J. D. George, Mrs. W. R. Thomasson and Warren K. Hoffmeister, all of Dallas, two brothers, Lee of San Francisco, California and John of Wichita Falls, Texas, three sisters, Mrs. C. C. Miller and Mrs. W. K. Butler of Fort Worth and Mildred H., a missionary in Ludhiana, India. He was a Mason with the A. C. Garrett Lodge.

Holland, Mrs. Watson

Mrs. Mary Holland Dies

     Mrs. Mary Holland, wife of W. H. Holland died at her home seven miles north of Jefferson, June 3, 1915. She was in failing health for several years. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Aiken, born in Rusk County, Texas 3 May 1876. She taught school for many years.

Holley, Mrs. Georgia PARR

Mrs. J. H. Holley Dies At Lodi

     Mrs. Georgia Holley, the wife of Mr. J. H. Holley died at their home in Lodi Saturday, February 8 at 3:45 p.m. after a lingering illness of several months, she was 34 years old. A husband and three little girls. a step-daughter and son are left to mourn her loss. The funeral took place Sunday at 4:30 p.m., with interment in the Old Foundry graveyard, Rev. L. H. Mathison conducted the services.

Hopper, E. T.

E. T. Hopper Buried At Prospect Tuesday

     Funeral services for E. T. Hopper, age 36, who died Monday morning at 3:15 at a Shreveport Sanitarium, were held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock with the Rev. T. K. Morris, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Prospect Cemetery. Mr. Hopper was ill about 10 days before his death; he had been a resident of our city for about 6 years. His widow and 2 stepsons, Vandine and Hal Wayne Reed, survive the deceased.

Howard, Mrs. J. H.

Mrs. Howard Dies At Greenville

     Mrs. J. H. Howard died Wednesday at Greenville, where she had been taken for treatment and the body was brought to Jefferson for burial at the Prospect Cemetery. She is survived by her husband and several children. Florence AUSTIN Howard was born 16 June 1859 in Greenville County, South Carolina and died on April 6th. She united in marriage to J. H. Howard at the age of 19. She is survived by her husband; sons, Frank and Clinton Howard of Texarkana; daughters, Mrs. Homer Lemmons of the Mt. Zion community, Mrs. W. H. Whitfield and Mrs. J. W. Stone of this community.

Hubbard, Mrs. A. B. & Infant

Death of Mrs. Hubbard & Child

     On last Friday, June 2nd, A. B. Hubbard returned from Dallas with the corpse of his ten month- old baby boy and his wife who was very low. The baby was buried at New Prospect. On Wednesday night, Mrs. Mittie Bell Hubbard’s death occurred after a lingering illness. She was taken to doctor for treatment, but it gave no benefit. The funeral service took place at the residence on Walcott Street at 2:30 Thursday afternoon and the remains were taken to the New Prospect graveyard six miles north of the city, for the interment by the side of her baby. A devoted husband and her brothers, W. R. and C. H. Proctor and other relatives survive Mrs. Hubbard.

Hughes, Mrs. Ellie

Mrs. Hughes Dies

       Mrs. Ellie Hughes died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. McKay Friday at 3 a.m. October 30,  after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Hughes leaves a devoted daughter, two sons, brother, sisters and other relatives to mourn her loss. The funeral took place Friday afternoon with Rev. T. S. Bomar conducting the services with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery, where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband, who preceded her in death a few months ago.

Hughes, Mrs. J. E.

Mrs. J. E. Hughes Buried at Lampasas

     Funeral services for Mrs. J. E. Hughes, 60, who suffered a heart attack Wednesday, February 7th, passed away Thursday, the 8th at the family home in Lampasas were held Friday. Mrs. Hughes was known to many of our readers, having visited here in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Shaw. Besides her husband, three children survive, W. E. Hughes of Anahuac, A. B. Hughes of Lampasas and Mrs. Fred Shaw of this city.

Infant Dies Sunday

     Infant son of Mayor and Mrs. J. B. Hussey was born at 11:30 Sunday morning, April 27 and died at 11 p.m. Sunday night. The funeral was held from the residence at 4 p.m. Monday, with the services conducted by Father Hecky of Marshall. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery.

Death of Mrs. Mary Hussey

     Mrs. Mary Hussey, aged mother of Mrs. M. J. Whelan and Mr. J. B. Hussey, passed away Saturday, 25th of June at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. J. Whelan after an illness of about a week. At 1 o'clock Sunday, the families of Mrs. Hussey left for Weston, West Virginia on the T & P for burial in the  Mt. Phela Cemetery at Weston, the old homeplace of the family.

Hutchins, Mr. Chas.

Mr. Hutchins Of Cushing, Oklahoma Died

     The news of the death of Mr. Chas Hutchins of Cushing, Oklahoma was received here today. Mr. Hutchins was the brother of our fellow townsman, Mr. Homer Hutchins, the barber.  Chas. Hutchins had lived in Marion County in the Liberty community near Atlanta and was the son of W. B. Hutchins of Huffines in Cass County. Mr. Hutchins leaves a wife and two children and many relatives to mourn his loss. He was a mechanic and worked for the Cushing Gasoline Plant, just north of Cushing. He fell 35 feet from a derrick when he became over-balanced and broke his neck. Rev. C. T. Cummings conducted the funeral services, after which the W. O. W. took over.

Note: Charles Victor Hutchins was born 20 April 1885 and died 29 July 1916. He is buried in the Laws Chapel Cemetery in Cass County. He married Mary Beatrice McDow.
