Jackson, Major J. O. Sr.

Major Jackson Dies Near Comet

     The death of Major J. O. Jackson, Sr. occurred at his country home near Comet four miles north of this city Wednesday morning at 6:30 on August 4th, after a long spell of illness in his 70th year. He had resided in Marion County about 40 years. A widow and four children survive him. The funeral was held at the Oakwood Cemetery Thursday at 10 o'clock with the Rev. T. S. Bomar conducting the services.

Jackson, Mrs. Mary Elmina

Death of Mrs. Mary Elmina Jackson

     Mrs. Mary Elmina Jackson died 28 December 1939, she was born near Opelika, Alabama 25 April 1869. She came to Jefferson at age four, settling near Hughes Springs, where she lived most of her life. She married Calvin Burns 21 December 1888 and to them were born five children, three of whom died in infancy. She joined the Missionary Baptist Church at age 30. After her husband died, she was a widow with three small children, but she worked hard and made a living for them. She married Henry Holman Jackson 19 January 1905, to this union were born three children.

     She was laid to rest in the Concord Cemetery, east of Hughes Springs, funeral services were conducted by Rev. Carl Chambers. She is survived by five children; Mrs. Carrie Ray of Hughes Springs, Mrs. Lillie Carter of Texarkana, Mrs. Ludie May Cromer of Lassater, Ellis L. Jackson of Levelland and N. B. Jackson of Lassater.

Jaynes, Mrs. Callie BANISTER

Mrs. Jaynes Passes Away

     Mrs. Jaynes was born 5 February 1878 in Alabama, her mother died when she was an infant and her father raised her in Louisiana, where she was educated and taught school. She joined the Missionary Baptist Church when she was 14 years old. In 1907 she married Miles N. Jaynes, she leaves three little children. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with the Rev. L. McCann conducting the services.

Note: Callie Donia Jaynes is buried next her husband, Miles Norton Jaynes in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, which is near Jefferson, but in Cass County.

Jett, Mr. J. M.

J. M. Jett Dies In Greenville

     Mr. J. M. Jett passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. S. Bass on West Henry Street after an illness of about four weeks, he was 83. He was the father of Mrs. R. S. Bass and R. H. Jett of this city. Funeral services will be held at the residence of R. S. Bass at 9:30 a.m., the remains will be taken to the Katy Depot and placed on train for Jefferson. The deceased was an ex-Confederate soldier and the Veterans are invited to attend the funeral. He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Johnson, Louise

Louise Johnson Dies At Smithland

     Louise Johnson, wife of the Rev. C. C. Clark [colored] departed this life at the family home near Smithland, Thursday, March 12th from asthma, she was 62 years old. She was raised by the Moseley family and the mother of sixteen children. The burial took place at the Judea Cemetery, Saturday at 11 a.m.

Johnson, M. M.

Pioneer Citizen Dies

     M. M. Johnson, a pioneer citizen of this city died early Monday morning July 27th at his home four miles from Lassater. The funeral took place Tuesday and he was laid to rest in the family cemetery, funeral services were conducted at the home of his son, Era and conducted by Elder G. K. Williams. His son Era Johnson is a commissioner of Precinct 1.

Note: Macklin M. Johnson was born 11 December 1839, he married Remaliah Cotton, 21 April 1858. He was the son of Isaac H. and Nancy J. MITCHELL Johnson. The Johnson Family Cemetery is located on private property.

Johnson, Wayne

Wayne Johnson Dies

     Bro. Johnson was buried in the Avinger Cemetery in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends. G. K. Williams conducted the funeral service. Wayne Johnson was born 24 November 1871. He married Miss Betty Ferrel 9 May 1889. to this union was born six children, five sons and one daughter; one son died in infancy, the others are all living. Mr. Johnson died 7 May 1916 at the age of 44.

Jones, Ed

Colored Gentleman Dies At Home

     Ed Jones [colored] died at his home in Jefferson December 7th from stomach and heart trouble. He came to Jefferson from Lexington, Kentucky some six years ago and engaged in the cattle market. He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church, Odd Fellows and Masons. His son, who is an undertaker in Lexington, Kentucky, came Thursday morning, after the funeral service at the Macedonia Baptist Church at 10 a.m., his body was taken back to Kentucky for burial. He is survived by his wife of Jefferson.

Death of Ed B. Jones

     On Monday, January 21st, Mr. Ed B. Jones passed away at the home of his brother, C. C. Jones, after a lingering illness. Mr. Jones had lived in Jefferson for a number of years and had many friends here. His father was a leading citizen of our city in its palmy days. He had assisted his brother in his large grocery store as long as his health would let him.  Mr. Jones leaves a devoted wife, brother and sister, to whom we extend our sympathy.

     The funeral took place Tuesday morning at 9:30 and was conducted by Rev. J. S. Lewis.

Jones, Felix Albinas

Death of F. A. Jones

     Word was received Saturday morning announcing the death of F. A. "Bine" Jones, who accidentally drowned in Lake Pochantrain, he was a well-known former citizen of Marion County. Mr. Jones' mother, Mrs. Charles Keown will be remembered living at her home on upper Broadway for many years.

Mrs. Homer Jones Passes Away

     Mrs. Homer Jones [nee Epsie Wallace] was born in Rusk County, Texas 11 December 1889. The family moved to Jefferson when she was small, her father had died when she was about three years old. She married Homer Jones, 9 February 1913.

Jones, Mrs. Margaret Virginia SHANAHAN

Former Resident Dies at Brownsville

     Mrs. Margaret Virginia SHANAHAN Jones, wife of Lee W. Jones died at 8:30 p.m. The funeral took place from the family residence on Brown Street at 5 p.m. and she was laid to rest at 6 p.m. yesterday in the City Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Shanahan and a sister of Mrs. J. B. Zachery of this city. Father Frigon of the Church of the Sacred Heart conducted the services at the Brownsville Cemetery. She is survived by a husband, two sisters and a brother. She was employed at the local Post Office.

Jones, W. F.

W. F. Jones Passes Away

     On Tuesday, November 10th at 7 a.m. W. F. Jones passed away at the family home on Polk Street, after a long illness. He had been a resident of Jefferson for over fifty years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, grandchildren and other relatives. The  funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. and was largely attended as all businesses were closed out of respect. Services were conducted by Rev. J. S. Lewis, Sr. and the Masonic Lodge, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. 

In the spring of 1861 he enlisted in Co. H. 7th TX Infantry and when his regiment was caught at Ft. Donelson, he joined the 19th TX Infantry with which he remained until the close of the war.

Note: William F. Jones 15 April 1845 - 10 November 1914 - wife, Sallie NASH Jones 23 August 1851 - 07 October 1935. Both are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.
