Train Wreck Takes Life Of Mr. Lanier
Mr. Emmett Lanier received word on Friday that his brother, H. S. Lanier was killed in a T & P wreck from a washout near Provencial, Louisiana early Friday morning. He was the fireman on Engine #246, he lived in Marshall and leaves a wife, Zilpah and two children, Raplh and Thelma. The body reached Jefferson at 9 a.m. on M. & K. T. and was met by family and friends, his body was taken to Linden for burial.
Note: Henry Spurgeon Lanier was born 14 October 1882 and died 4 April 1913. He is buried in the Linden Cemetery, Cass County, Texas.
Latham, Sarah A.

Mrs. Sarah Latham Dies
Mrs. Sarah Latham, wife of Mr. Clay Latham died at her home near New Prospect on Monday evening, January 6th and was buried at the New Prospect Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. Bro. Lewis of Jefferson conducted the funeral. Mrs. Latham leaves a husband; four sons; a daughter and other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She was 54 years old and a good Christian woman.
Note: Sarah A. Latham was born February 1854 and 6 January 1908, she was the wife of Hiram C. Lathamwas born16 August 1857 and died 13 August 1931. They are both buried in the New Prospect Cemetery. Kn/ch are Eugene, Willis, Otis, O'Dell and Gaines.

Mr. Russell Lathrop Dies At Home
R. I. Lathrop died at his home in Jefferson at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, October 31 at age 65. Russell Ira Lathrop was born 04 July 1850 in Illinois, he came to Texas when a young man and served in the Texas Rangers in West Texas. He married Willie Ada Mays 12 January 1885 and he is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Alf Faviell, Miss Helen Lathrop and Thomas Lathrop, all of Jefferson and Mrs. C. W. Graves of Joplin, Missouri; two brothers, C. H. Lathrop of Abilene, Texas, Ed Lathrop of Portland, Oregon; six sisters, Mrs. J. T. Leeson of Abilene, Texas, Mrs. Dickson of Takhoma, Washington, Mrs. Annie Treager and Mrs. Mollie Casey of Walla Walla, Washington, Mrs. Ida Wells of Vissalia, California. The funeral took place at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, November 1st at the home with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Lawrence Passes Away in California
Mrs. Mary E. Lawrence died in San Diego, California Monday night at 11 p.m. after a brief illness. She is the oldest daughter of Mrs. A. H. Rowell. For the past few years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Homer Oatman, formerly Miss Ruth Lawrence, who was born and raised in Jefferson.

Mr. Lay Passes Away
John H. Lay, who had been sick with tuberculosis and bright's disease for the last eight months in Dallas, was brought home by his wife, Mrs. M. E. Lay and his brother, Sam Lay of Shreveport to the home of his sister, Mrs. Allen Belote near Lodi, a few days before his death. He died Monday, August 16th and the burial took place Tuesday, the 17th in the rain at the Old Foundry Cemetery near Lodi. He is survived by his widow and several children.

Mr. Leaf Buried At Oakwood Cemetery
Mr. John A. Leaf died suddenly at his home on Walnut Street, this Thursday night about 8 p.m. Mr. Leaf was sick Wednesday suffering from acute indigestion, but had been at work at the Jefferson Oil Company plant. His widow and daughter, Mrs. Jessie Deware, Jr. and a son, Bert Leaf of Houston, survive him.

David Lee Dies At Shiloh
Mr. David Humphries Lee died at his home near Shiloh Monday evening, November 20th after many years of suffering. He was buried at 3 p.m. Thursday evening in the Shiloh Cemetery. David H. Lee was born 9 February 1838 near Bachelor's Retreat in Pickens County, South Carolina, when a young man he married Elizabeth Cromer, they moved to Texas in 1871, making Jefferson their home. He leaves a wife and five sons to mourn his loss, Tom and Will Lee of Jefferson, Harry and Raymond Lee of Shiloh and Ed Lee of Bryans Mill; one sister, Mrs. J. H. Sligh of Red Hill, Georgia. Brother Hamblen conducted the service.
Note: Cemetery book has him listed as Davis Lee born 9 February 1837 and 20 November 1907. He is buried beside his wife, Mary Elizabeth 1836-1916
Lemmon, Mrs. Vestal SUBER

Mrs. Vestal Lemmon, Arnold Suber Killed In Head-On Crash
Mrs. Vestal Lemmon, 21, and her brother, Arnold Suber, 19, of Austin were killed in a head-on collision with an oil truck, seven miles north of Palestine, about 8 o’clock Sunday afternoon. They were enroute to Jefferson to visit their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Horace Suber of Prospect. Myrna Loy Lemmon, four-year-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lemmon was seriously injured in the collision, receiving possible internal injuries and a leg broken in two places. She was taken to a Palestine hospital. Driver of the truck, J. C. Melton of Granger, was slightly injured. Funeral services for Mrs. Vestal Lemmon and her brother, Arnold Suber were held at the Prospect Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock with the Rev. G. K. Williams, pastor officiating. Rev. T. R. Morris, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson and the pastor of the Mt. Zion Community assisted him. Interment was in the Prospect Cemetery under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home. Her husband, her mother & father, and Lester Suber, a brother, survive Mrs. Lemmon.

Nettie Mae Lemmon
JEFFERSON Services for Nettie Mae Lemmon will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Haggard-Heaster Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, Nov. 10, at the funeral home. Mrs. Lemmon died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Marshall. She was born Nov. 25, 1907, in Cass County to Monroe Stone and Minie Belle Sanders Stone. Most of her life, she lived in Jefferson, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church, having served on many boards there. She was a former member of the Home Demonstration Club and Council, and she was a 4-H Club leader 1937-1955. She served as Marion County clerk from 1949 until her retirement in 1971, having the distinction of being the most often elected official of Marion County to date. Mrs. Lemmon was a member of the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club for more than 25 years. She was a member of the GFWC/TFWC/Jefferson 1881 Club, where she served as president seven terms and held the distinction of being the most often elected local club president in the history of the federation in Texas. She was a life member of the Jefferson Historical Society and Museum.Mrs. Lemmon is survived by two sons, Bill Winston Lemmon of Jefferson and Joe Bailey Lemmon Jr. and his wife, Jo Ann, of New Braunfels; one daughter, Annette L. Daigle of Jefferson; her grandchildren, Louis Daigle Jr., Mark Allan Daigle Sr., Paul Howell Lemmon, Carolyn Ann Callison and Elizabeth Anne Dickson; her great-grandchildren, Adam Lee Daigle, Amy Janell Daigle, M. Allan Daigle Jr., James Bryant Daigle, Christopher Lee Daigle, Charles L. Daigle III, Katherine Lemmon, Matthew Lemmon, Jamie Lynn Callison, Roger Callison, Benjamin Dickson and Julianne Dickson; and one great-great-grandson, Hunter Lee Daigle.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, the Jefferson Carnegie Library or a charity of choice.

Mrs. S. E. Lemons Buried Wednesday
Funeral services for Mrs. Ora C. Lemons.61, wife of Sam E. Lemons were conducted at the First Methodist Church in Jefferson Wednesday afternoon, February 14th at 3 p.m. with the Rev. D. Townes Windham, pastor of the church officiating. Mrs. Lemons who had been in ill health for some time disappeared on last Sunday night and could not be located. On Tuesday, the local Boy Scout troops were called on and after a diligent search, the body of Mrs. Lemons was located in the Big Cypress Bayou, near Welch’s bridge by Scouts, James McCasland, David Meisenheimer and others. The body was taken to Haggard Funeral Home. The deceased was born in Marion County on December 14, 1879 and had spent most of her life in this city. She is survived by her husband, Sam E. Lemons, one daughter, Mrs. Pete Bowles of Longview, two sons, Floyd and Preston Lemons and one grandson Ezelle Lemons, all of Jefferson; one sister Mrs. J. N. McCain of Hallsville and two brothers D. K. Brown of Mims Chapel and L, G. Brown of Louisiana. Burial was in the family lot in Oakwood Cemetery.

Jesse Lewis [colored] about 40 years old lost his life in an accident at the Jefferson Cotton Oil & Fertilizer Company Mill. He leaves and a child.
Lindsay, W. H.

Mr. Lindsay Dies At Barber Shop
W. H. Lindsay of Prospect, died about 10 a.m. Saturday morning while in the Howard Barber Shop. He suffered from heart trouble, he was 76 years old. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. R. L. Grubbs and a son Mr. Tom Lindsay. Burial took place Sunday at the New Prospect Cemetery.
Note: W. H. Lindsay [Lindsly on tombstone] was born 10 September 1840 and died 26 July 1913. He is buried beside his wife, Sally born 4 September 1835 in South Carolina and died 21 April 1907.

Mrs. G. W. Lindsey Dies
Mrs. G. W. Lindsey, 66 years, died at the family home here Friday evening at 8:40 after an illness of only a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey had been residents of Jefferson for about three years, coming here from Dallas. Mrs. Lindsey was born in Columbus, Mississippi 16 April 1873 and died in Jefferson, 24 November 1939.
Besides her husband, the deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. T. H. Hunter of Dallas, Mrs. C. M. Matthews of Houston; one son, Randolph Brookshire of Detroit, Michigan. The remains were carried to Dallas, her former home for interment in the Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sallie Lindsey
Mrs. Sallie Lindsey, wife of W. H. Lindsey of New Prospect community passed away. She was a native of South Carolina, she leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Lewis at the New prospect Church, with interment to follow in the New Prospect Cemetery.

Jefferson Chauffeur Dies In Auto Fire
Wayne Lindsey, a chauffeur of Jefferson was burned to death under an auto belonging to the City Recorder, M. F. Cates of this city. The car burned two miles west of Lawrence, between Terrell and Forney this morning at 1 a.m. He was so severely burned that he died from his injuries about 10 a.m. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, he was 28 and unmarried. His body was sent to Jefferson by train and he was buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. His parents, Mr. & Mrs. Tom Lindsey and sisters, Mrs. W. S. Jackson and Miss Lindsey, all reside at Jackson's Mill east of this city.
Note: Wayne Lindsey is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, which is near Jefferson, but in Cass County. Only date on stone is 7 October 1912.
List, Charles

Charles List Dies At 72
Charles List died Tuesday, December 3rd at 8:25 a.m. at age 72 years. He never recovered from a fall on Thanksgiving Day. Mr. List was a citizen of Jefferson for over fifty years and conducted a general store business. Charles List was born in Germany in 1840, he came to Jefferson with Bull's Army at the close of the civil war. He married here April 1872 to Annie Marie Nagel, one son, Johnnie was born to them. Both his wife and his son preceded him in death. The funeral was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the residence and services were conducted by Rev. J. Woodson.
Note: He was born 10 February 1840 in Germany. He is buried beside his wife and son at the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson, Texas.

Death Of Mrs. List
Mrs. Mary List, wife of Mr. Charles List passed away at their home in Howelton, the north suburbs of the city at 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon after a lingering illness. Mrs. List has been a resident of our city for many years. She leaves a devoted husband and a sister, Mrs. John Fiedler to mourn her death. The funeral took place at 3:30 Friday afternoon.
Note: The Cemetery book has her listed as Anna Marie List 1838-1904. She is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson.

Death of Emmett Lockett
The death of Emmett Lockett, son of Mr. T. N. Lockett, occured Sunday night, February 17th, after a lingering illness from consumption, at the family home here in this city. The father, sister and brother have the sympathy of their many friends in the loss of their son and brother.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Note: Unmarked grave. Parents were Thomas N. and Laura M. Lockett, both buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

Royal Lockett Dies
Royal Augustus Lockett, son of William and Mary Lockett was born 23 January 1879 and died 1 March 1914. He was laid to rest in the Lockett Cemetery on March 2. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. C. Cannon. He married Arrie Hatcher in December 1909. They had one son, William Clay Lockett.

Death of T. N. Lockett
On Saturday, October 5th, Mr. T. N. Lockett, passed away after a lingering illness at his residence in this city. The deceased was highly respected and an old citizen, he was county conveyor for years. He leaves a daughter and son, two little grandchildren and other relatives to mourn his loss and to whom we extend our sympathy.
Services were conducted by Rev. A. A. Wagnon, Sunday at 4 p.m. with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Members of Dick Taylor acted as pallbearers.

Death Of Dr. T. T. Luis
Dr. R. T. Luis who had charge of the sanatorium on Polk Street for colored people, died late Wednesday afternoon after a long illness from complications. Dr. Luis was taken to Atlanta for burial. He leaves a wife, step-daughter and brother.

Death of Mrs. Lundy
On Wednesday, June 19th, the death of Mrs. V. Lundy occurred at 7 a.m. after an illness of two weeks. The deceased had been a resident of Jefferson for many years. She leaves two sons, a little granddaughter, sisters and other relatives to mourn her loss, to which we extend our sympathy. The funeral took place from the residence at 10 a.m. Thursday, the remains were taken to Kellyville for burial.

W. J. Lundy Buried At Kellyville
W. J. Lundy's remains were brought to Jefferson from Texarkana last Friday morning by the train. Relatives and friends met the train and carried his remains to Kellyville, where his mother, brother and his first wife are buried. Rev. L. H. Mathison conducted the services. He is survived by a wife, a daughter, Effie who lives with her grandfather, W. R. Carr of this city. Will Lundy was raised in Jefferson and spent all of his life here before moving to Texarkana.

Lyon, Thomas L.

Brother Lyon Dies
On the 26 November 1908, Brother T. L. Lyon passed away. He was born in Tennessee 1 March 1827 and came to Texas before the war. He was married to Miss Sallie Christian 12 August 1862. to this union were born two sons and one daughter, Mrs. G. M. Jones. He served in the Civil War as a private, joining in Louisiana, after the war he engaged in the mercantile business until age and infirmities caused him to retire.
Note: Thomas L. Lyon is buried beside his wife in the Oakwood Cemetery. His wife, Sallie S. died 18 April 1889 at the age 54.
