Mrs. Schorling Dies
Cecelia, the wife of Simon Schorling, died at the residence of her uncle, C. A. Schweers, after a lingering illness on Sunday evening December 4th at 9:40 p.m. The remains were taken to New Orleans for interment on the # 5 Monday, accompanied by her husband and daughter.
Schluter, Judge A. G.

Judge A. G. Schluter Dies
Judge A. G.Schluter, 61, died at his home Monday about 2:45 p.m. after an illness of several months. He came to Jefferson from Tennessee as a young man in 1896 to read law in the office of his cousin, L. S. Schluter, he completed his work at Cornell University and was admitted to the bar in 1898. In 1899 he went to Austin where he was with the state for several years and also practiced law, serving two years as a member of the legislature from Travis County, he returned to Jefferson in 1918.. During the World War I he served as the chairman of the legal advisory board for Marion County. Mr. Schluter married Mrs. Ethel Osborn in 1914, he continued in law and in 1931 he was elected city attorney which he held until January 1939.
Funeral services were held at the New Jefferson Hotel [his home] Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. with the Rev. D. Townes Windham, pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. E. P. Smith, pastor of the Presbyterian Church and Rev. T. R. Morris, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Schluter is survived by his widow and a sister, Mrs. Robert John of Galatin, Tennessee. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home.
Note: Judge Augustus Gorwood Schluter was born 6 January 1877 and died 3 April 1939. Ethel Wynn Schluter was born 8 January 1884 and died 11 June 1945. They are both buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson.

Mr. Schweers Dead From Pneumonia
C. A. Schweers died Saturday, May 12th from an illness of several weeks from pneumonia, he was 79. Mr. Schweers was city sexton of the Oakwood Cemetery, a position held for 39 years. He has been a resident of Marion County since 1869, coming here from New Orleans. Services were held at the Catholic Church at 9:30 Monday morning and services were conducted by Father DeBeau of Shreveport. he was laid to rest in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Note: C. A. Schweers was born 30 April 1838 and is buried by his wife, Dora W. Schweers, born 31 July 1836 and died 20 November 1910.

Death of Mrs. Schweers
Mrs. Dora Schweers, wife of Mr. C. A. Schweers died at the family home in Jefferson, Sunday, November 20th at 9 a.m., after a lingering illness. She had been a resident here for many years, coming here with her husband and children in 1870 from New Orleans. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June of last year. She is survived by her husband, daughter, son & daughter-in-law, grandson and many dear friends. The funeral took place from the Catholic Church at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, with services conducted by Father Philip O'Donahue, with interment in the Catholic cemetery by a daughter and a son that had preceded her in death.

Miss Scott Dies At Greenville
Miss Puss Scott died at Greenville, Monday, May 18th. The remains were brought to Kellyville where burial took place at 5:30 p.m Friday. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. L. Cannan. Miss Scott was an aunt of John and Bill Scott and all were residents of Kellyville before they moved to Greenville.

Death of Mrs. S. W. Scott
Mrs. Josephine Scott, wife of S. W. Scott, who was very ill since the birth of her child, three weeks ago, passed away about 4 p.m. Thursday at the home of her mother, Mrs. M. E. Goetzman.
A devoted husband, mother, sisters and brothers are left to mourn her loss. The funeral took place at 3:30 p.m. Friday from the Catholic Church.

Death of W. H. Sedgrass
W. H. Sedgrass died at his home about nine miles east of this city on Route 6, Tuesday night, January 16 after a long illness. Mr. Sedgrass had lived in that area for some time. He is survived by a wife and five children, all grown. The burial was held at Trinity Cemetery near his home Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with services conducted by Rev. T. S. Bomar of this city.
Note: William Harrison Sedgrass was born 1 January 1839. He was married to Cathern E. Carter, she was married first to J. T. Carter. Cathern and William are buried next to each other in the Trinity Cemetery at Smithland.

Black Jaundice Claims Life of J. A. Sharp
On the evening of the 13th, at the residence of Cicero Gibson, in this county, J. A. Sharp age about 25 died from black jaundice. He was the son of J. T. Sharp of Cass County.

Death of Mrs. Robert Sharp
Mrs. Ennis TAYLOR Sharp, the wife of Mr. Robert Sharp died near Vivian. Louisiana, Saturday morning June 10th at 7 a.m. after a short illness from congestion. The body was brought from the home for burial at the Taylor graveyard, eight miles from Jefferson at 11 a.m. Sunday and was laid to rest near her mother, Mrs. Jennie Taylor who passed away in November 1915. A large number of friends and relatives were present, her devoted husband and three little boys, the least about 5 years old and two sisters are left to mourn her lose. Mr. Sharp is employed with the Producers Oil Company near Vivian and will return to work, the little boys will remain with Shep Taylor and wife at the old family home.

Mr. Shaw Found Dead By Relatives
Word was received here Monday morning that Dan Shaw died at his home in the west part of Marion County. His aunt, Mrs. W. P. Carr and his cousin, C. R. Coleman went to his house and found him lying in the yard, where he had fallen from his door. He suffered epileptic spells. He had lived alone since his mother died, he was a native of Jefferson and was about 47 years old. His brother Will Lundy came from Texarkana to attend the funeral on Tuesday, interment followed in the family plot at Kellyville.

Mrs. Simmons Laid To Rest
Mrs. Mary A. Simmons, of Lasater, Texas was laid to rest in the Pyland Cemetery 23 February 1908. She was the wife of C. J. Simmons, and was a Baptist. She leaves a husband; four sons; four daughters and twelve grandchildren. She was born in Walton County, Georgia and at the age of seventeen she married C. J. Simmons on 22 October 1868. They lived in Walton County three years befor moving to Texas in 1871. Rev. Jas. A. Abernathy conducted the services at the grave.
Note: Mary A. Simmons born 15 January 1851 and died 22 February 1908, her husband, Charles J. Simmons was born 24 September 1846 and he died 18 March 1924. They are both buried in the Pyland Cemetery near Avinger, Texas.

Captain Singleton Passes Away At Home
Captain W. E. Singleton, Sr. passed away at his home on Soda Street, Tuesday night, January 30th at about 11 p.m. after an illness of more than a month from general complications. He was born in Marion County, Missouri in 1835 and came to Marshall in 1864 and married Miss Ellen J. Harris in 1865, to whom seven children were born; Will E. Jr., Hal, Ellie, Earl & Ernest [twins, Ernest dying in infancy] J. Robert, and J. Marvin. The funeral was held from the home Wednesday at 4 p.m. and services were conducted by Revs. L. F. Brothers and T. S. Bomar.
Note: William E. Singleton, Sr. was born 13 April 1835, he was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery by his wife, who preceded him in death in 1914.

Jack Singleton Dies
Jack Singleton, colored died at his home on the 14th about 8 miles from town in the Bend. He was a Baptist preacher. The deceased is the last one of a faithful old family and though mashed in a black skin, Jack was robed in a character fit for emulation and his death is truly a loss for the community.
Note: Jack Singleton is not listed in the cemetery book, but there are many Singleton family members buried in the Judea Cemetery, about 9 miles east of Jefferson.

Mrs. Singleton Passes Away
Mrs. Louisa J. Singleton, wife of Captain W. E. Singleton, passed away at 11 p.m. Wednesday night, March 11th at the family home after an illness of several weeks, she was 73 years old. She had lived in Jefferson for over thirty years, coming here from Marshall. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. F. r. Largent of Ft. Worth, five sons, Earl of Beaumont, Will E., Hal, Dr. J. R., and J. M., all of this county and seventeen grandchildren. The services were held at 4:30 p.m. at the family home, conducted by Rev. H. T. Perritte and Rev. T. S. Bomar, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Ruby Singleton Dies After Short Illness
Little Ruby Singleton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Singleton [colored] died at the family home near Smithland on Route 6, Sunday , February 11th after an illness of several days. The funeral was held at the Judea Church and was conducted by the Revs. Whiten and Ross.

Allie C. Slaydon
DERIDDER - Services for Allie Calcote Slaydon will be at 10 a.m. today in Trinity Full Gospel Church with the Rev. Kennis Smith officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Core Cemetery in Gray, Texas, under direction of Hixson, DeRidder. Mrs. Slaydon, 73, of DeRidder died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Beauregard Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Rosepine and a lifelong resident of the Beauregard-Vernon Parish area. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a retired beautician.
Survivors include one son, Ross Whitaker of DeRidder; one daughter, Elaine Johnson of Tennessee; one brother, D.E. Calcote of Philmoth, Ore.; three sisters, Addis Hickman and Betty Sharp, both of DeRidder, and Pat Hester of Waller, Texas; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Death of W. B. Sloan
The members of Young Pine Camp, W O W, No. 1946, mourn the death of one of its members. Sov. W. B. Sloan after several days illness departed this life on 30 March 1908, he was kind hearted and a true sovereign.

Horace Smith Dies From Tuberculosis
Horace Smith died at San Angelo, April 24th where he had gone in hopes of being benefited from tuberculosis, his wife and little daughter were with him. Horace Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Smith. Members of the Cypress Camp W. O. W. of which the deceased was a member, took charge of the body and accompanied it to the home of his father, T. J. Smith on Bonham Street. The burial took place Thursday at New Prospect, six miles north of this city at 10 a.m. with services conducted by G. K. Williams and was assisted by Rev. T. P. Jolly.
Note: Horace H. Smith was born 24 April 1887, he is buried beside his father and mother at the New Prospect Cemetery.

Mr. Martin Smith, A Local Barber Dies
Martin J. Smith, [colored] died at his home on Line Street at 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 21st, after an illness of several weeks. He came to Jefferson when he was a young man and established a barber shop. He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and had been in the barber business some forty years. He was a member of Knight of Tabor and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. His funeral was held at Union Chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday with burial in that cemetery northwest of this city.

Death of H. A. Smith
Mr. H. A. Smith passed away at his home in this city on Soda Street at 3 p.m. Monday after a lingering illness. Mr. Smith came to this city from South Carolina some thirty years ago and settled north of the city, where he engaged in farming . After failing health about three years ago, he sold out and moved to town. He is survived by a devoted wife, four daughters, Mrs. C. B. Maxwell of Jefferson, Mrs. F. M. Maxwell and Mrs. Charles Walker, both of Marion County and Mrs. Tweetie Verden in Simpsonville, South Carolina; two sons, Hovey Smith and W. H. Smith of Greenville, South Carolina. The burial was held at New Prospect at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday . Services were conducted by Rev. L. F. Brothers, pastor of the First Methodist Church. after which the Masonic Lodge A. F. and A. M. of this city took charge of the burial.
Note: Mr. H. A. Smith was born 22 July 1848 in South Carolina and died the 27th March. He married Wiley Caroline Simpson.

Mrs. T. K. Smith Dies At Fry Home
Mrs. Harriett Smith, widow of T. K. Smith died at the home of her son, John H. Fry on Henderson Street at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 02 at the age of 68. She had lived here for forty years, coming from England when she was a young girl. She leaves one son, John H. Fry and a son-in-law, Al Faviell and grandchild, Alf Faviell, his wife and child, Johnnie Faviell, his wife and children, Hettie, Daisy, Mary and Tommie Faviell of Jefferson, Mrs. Florrie Adams and children at Harold, Texas. The funeral was held at the home at 4 p.m. Wednesday and services were conducted by Rev. T. S. Bomar with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. T. K. Smith Dies Suddenly
Mr. T. K. Smith died suddenly Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. at his home on Austin Street. He had been in feeble health for several months. Mr. Smith was born in New York and was 78 years old. He came to Jefferson about 35 years ago and five years later he married Mrs. Harriet Fry, who survives him. Mr. Smith was a soldier in the Union Army and commander of Opdyke Post GAR in Jefferson. The funeral was held Wednesday at 4 p.m. from the residence, with services conducted by the Rev. C. T. Cummings, the Methodist pastor. Mr. Smith was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson.

Accidental Killing Of Little Jack Spradley
The sad news of the tragedy which occurred at the home of the father, David Spradley on the Wade place about six miles from town and about two miles from the Tuscumbia bridge in Harrison County, around 6:30 p.m. Friday the19th, reached here Saturday through a neighbor. A. E. Forbes. The little boys, Jim, aged 6 years and Jack, aged 4 years, were in a room playing, when they took down a loaded and cocked 22 target gun and in playing, Jim pointed the gun at Jack, it went off striking Jack in the forehead with death occurring about midnight. It was a sad accident. The burial took place Saturday in the Pope Cemetery. Little Jack was named for J. S. Lewis, Jr. of this city.

Mrs. Stallcup Passes Away
Mrs. M. C. Stallcup was born near Macon County, Georgia 20 December 1854. The family moved to Texas to Marion County. In 1871 she married M. C. Stallcup and to this union eleven children were born, eight of whom survive their mother. She passed away on Sunday evening, September 26th.
Note: Mattie BELL Stallcup was the wife of Mike C. Stallcup 29 December 1846 - 05 July 1922, they married 09 March 1871. to this union were born the following children: Lucille, Nellie, Olivia, Bliss, Baxter, Anna Bet, Will, Mary Goldie, Ney and Rusk. They are both buried in the Stallcup Cemetery.

George W. Starrett Buried Saturday
George W. Starrett, 66, formerly of Marion County, died at his residence in Avinger on Thursday night, February 1st after a short illness. Mr. Starrett was born in Franklin County, Georgia, but had lived in the Mims Chapel community for several years prior to moving to Cass County. He was twice married and by his first marriage, he is survived by two sons, E. G. Starrett of Linden and R. A. Starrett of Avinger and five daughters, Mrs. Grady McKinney, Mrs. Ida Wilson, Mrs. J. W. Allison all of Avinger, Mrs. Lorraine Blackburn and Mrs. Georgia Mae Hall of San Antonio.
Survivors from his second marriage, his wife, Lilly Starrett; two daughters, Lucille and Sibyl both of Avinger; two sons, James and G. T. both of Avinger; twenty-one grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. W. Dickey, pastor of Avinger officiating, with interment in Turkey Creek Cemetery Saturday afternoon.
Sterne, Mrs. Ernestine

Mrs. Sterne Dies in New York
Mrs. Ernestine Sterne died at her home in New York City, Saturday, November 22nd, she was 74 years old. The funeral and interment took place Monday, the 24th. Mrs. Sterne was a pioneer citizen of Jefferson, coming here from Houston, Texas as a bride with her husband, Mr. Jacob Sterne in 1859 making the trip by wagon. Mrs. Sterne was appointed postmaster after her husband's death, for sixteen years after which she moved to New York City with her children. She is survived by one daughter, Laura and three sons, Leopold, Alfred and Fred, all living in New York City.
Note: Mrs. Sterne's husband Jacob Sterne was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery 7 November 1872.
Stevens, Mrs. Fannie

Mrs. Stevens Dies From Complications
Mrs. Fannie Stevens died at the residence of her cousin, Mrs. E. Thomas June 12th at 7 p.m. She died from complications of asthma, congestion and paralysis.
Note: She was the wife of G. W. Stevens, death date is only date on stone. She is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson.

Mrs. Stoll Dies At Rusk, Texas
Mrs. Virginia Stoll, widow of the late Mr. A. G. Stoll died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Culberson in Rusk, Texas Monday morning, February 16th at the age of 86. She was a resident of Jefferson for many years. About ten years she went to live with her daughter at Rusk. She was a member of the Methodist Church. The body was brought here on the T & P #6 at 1:54 and accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Culberson and Mrs. N. Henderson, a daughter from Joshua and a son, Buck Stoll of Karnack. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Note: Virginia H. Stoll was born 1828. She is buried beside her husband, Adam Stoll and several children.

Baby Boy Stone Died
Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Stone who lived at Lodi on Route 1, lost their little two month old baby boy Monday morning, February 12 after a short illness. The burial was held at Shiloh Tuesday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dent of Linden conducting the services.
Note: Edward Marshall Stone was born 2 December 1916; cemetery stone has death date as 4 February 1917. He was the son of Pleasant Harden and Lois Eustacia TAYLOR Stone, Sr.

Miss Nona Stringfellow Died Monday Evening
Miss Nona Lee Stringfellow died Monday evening about 6:45. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 from the residence on Jefferson Avenue. The services were conducted by Rev. G. L. Morris, pastor of the First Baptist Church with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. She is survived by three brothers, J. C. Stringfellow and his wife from Celiste, J. J. and R. R. Stringfellow, both of Rocky Branch; three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Williams, Mrs. J. C. Jenkins and Mrs. G. C. Chambers of Daingerfield.

Death of Mrs. K. Stutz
After an illness of over two weeks, Mrs. K. Stutz passed away at 4 a.m. Friday morning at the family residence. She has been a resident of Jefferson for over forty years, coming here with her husband, J. L. Stutz, who was a leading merchant up to his death. She was in her 77th year, while in feeble health for several years, she was always bright and cheerful. She is survived by three daughters; five sons; and six grandchildren to mourn her loss of a true and devoted mother.
Note: Mrs Stutz was born in Germany 9 July 1829 and died 20 December 1907 in Jefferson. She is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery next to her husband, he was born 31 January 1830 and died 27 July 1874.

Death Of Mrs. Fred Stutz
Mrs. Julia Stutz, wife of Mr. Fred Stutz, died at the family home on Line Street, Sunday morning, September 17th at 11 a.m., after a illness of some time. She is survived by her devoted husband, three daughters and other relatives to whom much sympathy is extended in their sorrow. The funeral was held at 3:30 Monday afternoon from the residence with burial in the family lot at the Oakwood Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. W. M. Joyner and Rev. L. F. Brothers.

Mrs. Vestal Lemmon, Arnold Suber Killed In Head-On Crash
Mrs. Vestal Lemmon, 21, and her brother, Arnold Suber, 19, of Austin were killed in a head-on collision with an oil truck, seven miles north of Palestine, about 8 o’clock Sunday afternoon. They were enroute to Jefferson to visit their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Horace Suber of Prospect. Myrna Loy Lemmon, four-year-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lemmon was seriously injured in the collision, receiving possible internal injuries and a leg broken in two places. She was taken to a Palestine hospital. Driver of the truck, J. C. Melton of Granger, was slightly injured. Funeral services for Mrs. Vestal Lemmon and her brother, Arnold Suber were held at the Prospect Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock with the Rev. G. K. Williams, pastor officiating. Rev. T. R. Morris, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson and the pastor of the Mt. Zion Community assisted him. Interment was in the Prospect Cemetery under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home. Her husband, her mother & father, and Lester Suber, a brother, survive Mrs. Lemmon.

Mrs. W. S. Sutton Buried Wednesday
Funeral services for Mrs. W. S. Sutton, 58, who died Tuesday were held at the Simmons Cemetery near Liberty Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 with the Rev. J. M. McCain of Hallsville and Rev. Brady of Avinger conducting the services at the grave. Survivors include her husband, W. S. Sutton and ten children, Mrs. R. D. McCain of Austin, Mrs. Marie Cannon of Avinger, Mrs. A. C. Simmons, Mrs. Cecil Ayers, Miss Dorothy Sutton, Curtis, Bell, Burrel, Edward and Roy Sutton all of Jefferson.
