Comments: John Swanson Yarbrough in 1810 was living in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.  By 1820 he was living in Clark County, Arkansas and by 1832 when he sold his farm he was living in neighboring Hempstead Co., Arkansas.  Swanson came to Texas in February 1832 and was first known to have lived in that section of the Municipality of Nacogdoches when it became the Municipality of Tenehaw in 1835, but is best known as Shelby County, Texas today. He fought for Texas Independence and soon after moved to Houston County, Texas.  He was one of the signers of the petition to form Houston County, the first county formed in the new Republic.  Sometime between 1840 and 1845 his wife Cynthia died yet again leaving him with young children and no mother to care for them.  He married Francis Unknown Tope Moore about 1845 in possibly Houston County, TX.  By 1855 the family was living in Gonzales County, TX.  By 1857 the family again moved to the newly formed Atascosa County, TX and by 1858 was living in McMullen County.  Family tradition says that Swanson Yarbrough was shot in his corral over a horse deal gone bad.  He was buried in the Yarbrough Family Cemetery in Yarbrough Bend.  In 1982 the cemetery was moved to Hill Top Cemetery.
