Lewis Manogin - Mariah Golden - 04 Aug 1869 - C-376 (B) Lewis and Mariah Manogin do not appear on the 1870 Census. However, a Lewis Managin appears in the 1880 Census of Panola Co. At that time he was 70 years old, b in SC, his father and mother b in VA. His wife was Phyllis, age 80 and paralyzed. She was b in SC and both her parents born in VA. They were living in the household of Ennis and Emily Grant, relationship not stated.

Richard "Dick" Golden was born in Lincoln County GA in 1798. He married Mary "Polly" Higgins about 1818 presumably in Blount Co AL.
They had seven children who lived to be adults:
Lucinda was born May 9, 1819 and died November 6, 1852. She married Israel Oden. (Israel was born 7 Mar 1816, died 4 Jan 1887, both are buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.)
Elizabeth was born in 1823 and died after 1877. She married Cornelius Crenshaw IV on June 16, 1842. (Cornelius was elected County Commissioner in 1853 and Justice of the peace in 1856. He died Sep 1863. As Cornelius' child by his first marriage was the first person to be buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery and the Golden family also buried there, it can be assumed that Elizabeth and Cornelius are both buried there.
Catherine was born in 1825 and died circa 1865. She married J.L. Matthews on July 21, 1842. (Catherine is buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery. Her grave is marked with a tombstone that has no dates, but simply reads "Grandmother Catherine Matthews")
Mace B. was born in 1827 and his marriages were to Martha E. Miller and to Mary Ann Talbert. (Mace died prior to Sep 1866 as the probate of his estate was heard during the Sep 1866 Term of Court. Mary was born 25 Dec 1838, died 15 Sep 1879 and is buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.)
Henry H. was born in 1829 and his marriages were to Sarah Dillard, Laura Elvira Tiller and to a Miss Campbell. (Henry H. died prior to Sep 1855 as the probate of his estate was heard during the Sep 1855 Term of Court)
Dorcas Irene was born about 1832 and died about 1871-1872. She married Isaac Henley Crenshaw on October 23, 1845. (Isaac was born 12 Feb 1824, died 7 Jul 1884, buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery. Isaac was a brother to Cornelius Crenshaw IV who married Dorcas' older sister Elizabeth.)
Mary Jane was born circa 1840 and she married Pinckney Taylor on July 27, 1856. (Pinckney died following the Battle of Mansfield during the Civil War, Mary Jane died not long after. Their two children were raised by her parents, Richard and Mary Golden. Pinckney served in Company K, 28th TX Cav. Both he and Mary Jane are buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery. Their graves are marked with headstones that bear their names, but no dates.)
On December 1841, the Richard "Dick" Golden family migrated to Texas and settled just south of the later side of where the Mt. Zion Methodist Church was later situated.
He steadily accumulated wealth in his new home county. He frequently made gifts of land and slaves to his married children. The Civil War and abolition of slavery cut deeply into the financial holdings of the Goldens, but even so, Richard continued to purchase real estate and the 1870 records show he owned 2,000 acres.
Dick was a man of strong character and temper as revealed in several events known to his descendants. He was elected as one of the first four commissioners and was the only one reelected the next term. After a severe internal injury, he sewed the wound together and promised that if he lived, he would be a better man. True to his word, after his recovery, he helped establish the Mt. Zion Methodist Church and was an initial trustee.
His daughter Mary Jane was married to Pinckney Farrow Taylor, who was seriously wounded in the Civil War Battle of Mansfield. Richard and a slave went to the battle site and found Pinckney in a church. They brought him home where he died three days later. Shortly after, Mary Jane also died and Richard and Polly took their two grandsons to rear.
Polly is known to have been a cripple in her later years. Her talent lay in weaving and once she fashioned a blue wool bedspread which was kept in her family for many years. In old age, Polly went to live with her nephew, Matt Trosper, in Bethany, where she is believed to have lived until her death in 1877.
Golden ancestors and the related Turners were found in Lincoln County GA. Richard's parents, William Golden and Mary Turner Golden, migrated to New Market in Madison County AL in 1818. Richard settled in Blount County AL about the same time. He remained there until his move to Texas in 1841.
After a life of blessings and tragedies, Richard died in January 1873, leaving much of his still considerable wealth to his fatherless grandchildren.
