Zula Lee Copeland

Funeral services for Mrs. Zula Lee Copeland, 76, of Odessa will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 7, 1982 graveside at the Iraan Cemetery with Rev. Bailey Stone of Odessa's First Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home.

She was born December 23, 1905, Booneville, Arkansas. She died Saturday, June 5, 1982 at Medical Center Hospital. She had been a resident of Odessa since 1979.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Adkins of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three sons, Douglas A. Copeland, Jimmie D. Copeland and Donald G. Copeland, all of Odessa; three sisters, Pauline Moore of Thousands Oaks, California, Eura Brewer of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Rosemary Gleason of Oakhurst, California; one brother, J. T. Carolan of Bakersfield, California, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Former Angelo State University administrator Ollie Samuel Cauthen, 79, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 28, 2001, in his home. Cauthen was born in Huntsville, Texas, Aug. 14, 1922, to Ina Mitchell Cauthen and Ollie Samuel Cauthen Sr. He was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde and Jack.

He attended Huntsville High School and Sam Houston State College before entering the United States Marine Corps, serving during World War II. After the war, Cauthen received a bachelor of science and a master of arts degree in geology from Sul Ross State College. He later attended the University of Wyoming where he earned a doctorate in education. Ollie was associated with Gulf Oil Co. for five years before entering the education field. He taught in the McCamey school system for one year and was a teacher and principal at the Sheffield Elementary School for seven years before completing his doctorate and coming to San Angelo College, now Angelo State University, in 1963. His career at ASU spanned 30 years, serving as vice president for University Affairs, director of Special Services, coordinator of Data Processing and Public Relations director. Cauthen maintained a keen interest in all phases of education and college athletics, receiving awards and appreciation plaques from both Texas and national groups. He is listed in Whos Who in American Universities and Colleges and Whos Who in the South and Southwest. He served as ASU institutional representative to the Lone Star Conference for 22 years, holding the office of president twice. He was a member of numerous groups and organizations including the Angelo State University Honorary Alumni Association, United Way, Alpha Chi, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Texas State Teachers Association, Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. In 1980, he was appointed to the Governors Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Following discharge from the service, Cauthen met and married Julia Ann Merck in Sheffield, Texas, on June 6, 1947. They had two children, J.Lee and Ina Ann. After retirement, Cauthen worked part-time three years as a customer relations representative for PFM Food Services, covering a five-state area. The many contacts made with other university staff while at ASU gave him a solid base upon which to operate.

Service will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Sheffield Cemetery in Sheffield .

Ollie is survived by his wife, Julia Ann Merck Cauthen of San Angelo; son, J.Lee Cauthen of San Angelo; and daughter, Ina Ann Sally Cauthen Breaux and husband, Gary, now living in Australia. Pallbearers will be Jerry Vandergriff, Mike Martin, Phil George, Bedford P. Cain, Bernell Doc Smith, Jim Hess, Randy Matthews, with honorary pallbearers, Warren Griffin, George Alexander and Joel Howerton. The family requests that memorials be sent to the O.S. Cauthen Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 110023, ASU Station, San Angelo, TX 76909 or to a favorite organization or charity. Thank you to all our friends and relatives for their help and support during Ollies illness. A special thanks to VistaCare Family Hospice staff for the loving and caring way they guided us through this process. Dr. Cauthen once said that an opportunity to give help to students in any fashion whatsoever expressed the philosophy of his role in education. He added, There is a place in this world for everyone. We are trying to help students find their place.

Noe Campos, 26, died Nov. 15, 2005 in Fort Stockton. He was born Oct. 31, 1979, in Alpine to Francis and Gaudencio Campos.

Services were held Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005 at the Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Joe Chavez officiating. Internment followed in East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton.

Survivors include his parents; fiancée, Ruby Galan of McCamey; grandparents, Philipe and Philipa Campos of Fort Stockton; sisters, Maria Campos, Rachel Campos and Ruth Witter, all of Fort Stockton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Audrea Lea Colls, 86, Eldorado, died Monday, January 30, 2007 in Eldorado.

Born June 1, 1919 in Rising Star, Audrea was the daughter of James Arthur and Cordelia Turner. She was one of six siblings. After graduating from high school, she attended nursing school in Lubbock. Audrea and Herbert Victor Colls met and were united in marriage in 1939. Later, they moved with their son, Curtis to Imperial where they built a home and farmed for many years. In the early 1950s, the family moved to Coyanosa, where they farmed and raised cattle until their retirement in 1979.

During that time, Audrea and Herbert lost their son, but began a new chapter of their lives. Five small children, all brothers and sisters were placed in their care. Vickie and Don were blessed to remain with Audrea and Herbert and were adopted by them in 1950. The other children were placed in permanent homes.

Following their retirement, Audra and Herbert moved to Fort Stockton, lived in New Braunfels and Ingram briefly. They then moved back to Fort Stockton until Herbert's death in 1982. In 1996, Audra moved with her daughter's family to Eldorado. She was a resident of Schleicher County Nursing Home from April 2002 until her death.

A charter member of the First Baptist Church of Coyanosa, Audra had many interests, sewing, gardening, canning, cooking and caring for those she loved. In her young adult years, she enjoyed raising horses and barrel racing. Loving her five grandchildren was the highlight of her life. Audra was "Mamaw" to all of her grandchildren and just about everyone else who knew her.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; her son, Joe Curtis Colls; her brothers, Julius Turner, Jim Turner and Eldon Turner; her sister, Opal Myrl Scoville and a baby sister.

She is survived by: her son, Donald Ray and his wife, Cathy Colls, Dumas; her daughter Vickie and her husband Rick Schwiening, Eldorado; five grandchildren; and her grandsons-in-law, Darren Morrison and Jess Martin, San Angelo.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at the East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton. Memorials may be made to the Schleicher County Nursing Home, whirlpool tub project, 400 W. Murchison, Eldorado, TX. 76936. Arrangements were under the direction of Kerbow Funeral Home, Eldorado.

Gregoria Acosta Caballero, 84, Fort Stockton, died Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Odessa. She was born October 17, 1921, at Moresckal, Mexico, she was the daughter of Lucas and Aurelia Hinojos Acosta. Gregoria was united in marriage to Severino Caballero in 1941 in Mexico.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Severino; her son, Gustavo Caballero; and her parents, Lucas and Aurelia Acosta.

Surviving Gregoria is: her sons, Arturo Caballero, Fort Stockton and Severino Caballero, Jr., Lovington, N. M.; her daughters, Armida C. Corral, Fort Stockton, Rebecca Suchil and Socorro Rojas, both of Odessa, Ramona C. Aranda, Lovington, N. M, Griselda Rojas, state of California, and Micaela C. Cepeda, Ojinaga, Mexico; 31 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by: her brother, Manuel Acosta, Mexico; and her sisters, Susana Celaya, Fort Stockton, Celestina Gomez, Del Rio, Meregilda Garcia, Lovington, N. M. and Francisca Dominguez, state of New Mexico.

A rosary was recited January 25 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Fort Stockton. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, January 26 in St. Agnes Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Father Joey Faylona will officiate. Interment will be in Fort Stockton Catholic Cemetery . Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Houston James Capers, infant son of Stephen and Rosie Capers, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at East Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Reed Kurtz officiating. Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.

He was born Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, and was Apostolic.

Candelaria M. Carrillo, 76, of Fort Stockton, a Fort Stockton Independent School District cafeteria worker, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, in Odessa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ with Josua Villa officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery . Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.

She was born in Shafter and moved to Fort Stockton in 1965 from Hereford. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Juan B. Cordova, 92, of Fort Stockton, a retired National Park Service carpenter, died Monday, May 11, 1998, in Fort Stockton. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Fort Stockton Funeral Home. He was born in Terlingua and moved to Fort Stockton in 1981 from Marathon. He was Catholic.

Trinidad Chavarria, 78, of Fort Stockton, a homemaker, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Pecos County Memorial Hospital. Mary Curtis, 96, of McCamey, a retired schoolteacher, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, in McCamey Convalescent Center. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Restland Cemetery in Iraan with the Rev. Joel Barrett officiating. Arrangements by Richard W. Box Funeral Home.

She was born in Mineola. She was a pianist for the Iraan Methodist Church and the Lions Club until 1991.

Veteran Lawman Dies Of Illness

William Edgar Cope, 84, of Fort Stockton, died at 11 p.m. Friday at Odessa's Medical Center Hospital following a short illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fort Stockton Funeral Home Chapel with burial in East Hill Cemtery.

He was born June 5, 1887, in Sterling City. He moved to Fort Stockton in 1900 from Sterling City. He was a deputy sheriff of Pecos County for 35 years, serving under all the county's sheriffs since 1909. He retired recently.

He is survived by a son, John E. Cope of Fort Stockton; three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Manuel Castro, 95, of Fort Stockton, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, in Fort Stockton.

Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. James Catholic Church. Burial will be at Geeslin Funeral Home.

He was born in Zacatecas, Mexico.

Billie E. Clark, 85, of Fort Stockton, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, in Fort Stockton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Stockton Church of Christ with Harold Durham officiating. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery.

He was born in Millers View.

Gloria S. Chalambaga, Odessa, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007. Born in Fort Stockton to Julio Flores Sanchez and Manuela Hernandez, she was raised in Fort Stockton with her brothers and sisters, Mary, Edward, Cecila, Jimmy, Eva, Rosie and Julian. Gloria and Delis Gonzalez Chalambaga of Sanderson were united in marriage May 29, 1957.

In 1980, she completed and received a bachelor's degree and teacher's certification from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She served as an elementary teacher for four years before beginning a new career as an independent Texas Insurance agent in 1983. She owned and operated Gloria Chalambaga Insurance for 22 years.
Her husband, Delis Chalambaga; her parents, Julio Flores Sanchez and Manuela Hernandez; her brother, Edward Sanchez; her sisters, Eva Sanchez Dominguez and Cecila Sanchez Urias precede her in death.

Gloria is survived by her children, Michael Chalambaga and Lisa Chalambaga, Odessa and Beaumont; her brother, Jimmy Sanchez; and her sisters, Mary Rios and Rosie Bitolas. Four grandchildren and numerous loving nieces, nephews and close cousins also survive her.

A Rosary service was held Friday evening July 27, 2007. Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday morning July 28, 2007. Father Francis X. Frey officiated. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Odessa.

Gabriel Chavarria, Midland, died Friday, July 20, 2007 in Martin County. He was 42 years old.

Born August 9, 1964, in Fort Stockton, he was the son of Hortencia Chavarria and Frank Chavarria, Sr. Gabriel moved to Midland in 1994 and began his career as a roughneck. He worked all positions for different companies throughout the years and took pride in being in the oil industry. He enjoyed spending his free time with family and friends in his "shop" and kept himself busy barbequing, listening to music while rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, and, like his father, he took interest under the hood of a car.
Gabriel and Gracie Urquidez of Alpine were united in marriage September 24, 1997.

His father, Frank Chavarria, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Pablo and Maria Chavarria; maternal grandparents, Edwardo and Margarita Salas; his aunts, Oralia S. Ramirez,

Eva Conde, and his uncle, Edwardo Salas preceded him in death.

Gabriel is survived by his wife, Gracie Chavarria, Midland; his mother, Hortencia Chavarria, Fort Stockton; his daughters, Amanda Chavarria, Seguin, and Dioni Urquidez, Midland; his granddaughter, Zayles Brial Whitehurst, Midland; his brothers, Franks Chavarria, Jr. and wife, Cindy, Midland; Larry Chavarria and wife, Becky, Imperial; Danny Chavarria and wife, Tessie, Alpine; his twin sister, Gracie Terrazas and husband, Eddie, Midland; and his sisters, Marissa Singh and husband, Gilbert, Fort Stockton; Teresa Amaro and husband, Cipriano, Marfa. His mother-in-law, Teresa Uriquidez, Alpine, and numerous aunts, nephews and nieces also survive him.

Rosary was held Wednesday evening, July 25, 2007, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning, July 26, 2007 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Midland.

Pallbearers were Edwardo Salas, Jr., Ralph Lovington, Shawn Wishert "Cowboy", Jimmy Munoz, Mario Jimenez, Raul Pina, Tony Alvarado, Jr. and Adam Llanez. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Luna, Frank Chavarria, Larry Chavarria and Danny Chavarria.
